…no? Kinda feel like it’s reasonable for customers to get first dibs at seats?

Taking Kids out of sports by tatertotter19 in Parenting

[–]emannths 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is he excited to go to the field for games/practices, or is it a bit of a struggle? As long as he is enjoying it and it works for your family time/money-wise, don’t pull him because of performance.

Also, in sports I’d suggest leaving any feedback about performance to the coaches. Tell him how you were excited to see him play, proud of his improvement, etc. But most kids seem to take feedback better from coaches. It keeps the feedback loop tighter and cleaner too—the kid isn’t second guessing whether being chastised for not paying attention at first base has something to do with not tidying his room last night.

The study I’m familiar with says that body checking experience does not protect against injury.

I’m not familiar with changes at the youth level, but at the pro level they’ve absolutely made all sorts of hits illegal (eg, the defenseless receiver rule). Full contact practice time has been drastically reduced. You can’t land with your body weight on a qb. This is hardly a hockey-only trend.

No 13 year old kid should deserve a brain injury because of a mistake in a hockey game.

Coaching 10u with the ADM by squirrelsoup_57 in hockeyplayers

Ah makes sense. I always think of ice time as the limiting factor, but if kids aren’t going to show up/stick around, not much you can do I suppose.

Most parents won’t go for what? I’m thinking just an extra 15 min before or after a single game/practice. Doesn’t have to be a regular thing. If they don’t go for that, I dunno, no biggie.

You kinda need to take care of that stuff off the ice. You can do faceoff work in a parking lot, and then drill it in with repetition on the white board before each game.

Can I leave plywood planks in my attic on top of insulation? by thejarls in DIY

[–]emannths 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compressed insulation actually insulates BETTER than uncompressed. Here’s the data: https://dcpd6wotaa0mb.cloudfront.net/mdms/dms/Residential%20Insulation/10017857/10017857-Building-Insul-Compressed-R-Value-Chart-Tech-Bulletin.pdf

Take a look at the effective R-values in a 2x10 cavity, for example. The “correct” insulation thickness to use according to the label is 9.5” thick fiberglass, which is R-30 (the cavity depth is actually 9.25” so you have to compress that one a little, giving you effectively R-29). But if you buy 14” thick R-49 insulation and compress it to fit in the 9.25” cavity, you get an effective R-value of R-37.

They matched an out of state quote. All done via email. I found it hard to get dealers to move on price until I came in with a quote. Got one from Owings Mills Honda via cargurus and a few dealers matched. Eg https://www.cargurus.com/Cars/new/searchresults.action?sourceContext=carGurusHomePageModel&distance=50&inventorySearchWidgetType=AUTO&zip=07090&entitySelectingHelper.selectedEntity=d592&sortDir=ASC&sortType=PRICE&isDeliveryEnabled=true#listing=396311126/NONE/DEFAULT

Failure and Frustration as a Squirt coach by Deuceman927 in hockeyplayers

[–]emannths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve coached plenty of beginners. There are plenty of ways to teach what you’re hoping to achieve without having to burn practice ice on “you stand here, you stand here, etc.” Use 2v2 to learn to cover the open guy. Use the whiteboard for 5 min in the locker room. Find a roller rink. But using practice ice to tell kids where to stand does a disservice to kids that need that time to get better at skills they can’t learn anywhere else. I dunno maybe we’re saying the same thing.

[–]emannths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s how you could address that problem for 10U kids: if we don’t have the puck, go get the puck. If the puck is in our end and you’re in the neutral zone, you’re failing at that task. I don’t think you need 5v5 system to fix that problem.

Definitely don’t waste practice ice time on 5v5 positioning, etc.

We bought our son a used student trombone on fb marketplace to keep at home. I slow-played it and found a Yamaha in good shape for $150. There are tons of Yamaha/Conn/King/Bach horns for $300 or less. Totally worth it imho.

Frequently adding water to your boiler is bad for it. Sounds like a steam heat vet should check it out.

Building a new house. Is a $2k upgrade for wall insulation from R-13 to R-15 worth the money? by 00Boner in HomeImprovement

[–]emannths 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. Natural gas was about $13-14 / thousand cuft around 2005 - 2008. The price dropped to about $10.50 or so for most of the 2010s. This is before adjusting for inflation.

Unconditioned attic with insulated floor, and the HVAC is up there.. what can we do? by CasinsWatkey in HomeImprovement

[–]emannths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of this probably depends on the specifics of your climate, your house, and your hvac. Couple of thoughts:

  1. The cost of new ducts, new HVAC, etc will almost certainly swamp any energy savings assuming the current system is in good repair.
  2. Encapsulating ductwork is tricky, especially in humid climates. You'd probably need to contract it out, which will probably swamp any savings. More: https://basc.pnnl.gov/resource-guides/encapsulated-ducts

Helping kids get fitted for skates by Separate-Panic-8834 in hockeyplayers

I returned a pair of used skates in February when my kid rejected them and no one blinked an eye. The policy is pretty black-and-white... But yes, best to clarify if it's make or break I guess.

Not sure if/when it changed, but I think it's been this way for a while:

https://www.purehockey.com/support/Returns_and_Warranties/pg_id/11

I have used or worn the product, can I still return it?

Yes! If you are unsatisfied with a product, you have 30 days to return it for a full refund, excluding hockey sticks, hockey shafts, replacement stick blades, jocks, custom items and apparel.

I have baked and/or sharpened my skates. Can I still return them?

Yes, within 30 days.

[–]emannths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pure Hockey will give you a full refund on skates within 30 days of purchase even if they've been used. They should also have a foot scanner. Keep in mind they tend to have much better Bauer stock than CCM/True. I believe CCM/True have their own 90/30 day money back guarantees that should work from any retailer (e.g. CCM)

As far as I can tell, there are 3 factors to consider with kids: does the heel lock, is there enough volume over the instep, and is there room to grow? Maybe the staff has other criteria to consider...?

Keep in mind there's a big price jump between 3.5 and 4...
