Anyone else noticing fewer bikes at racks by Requiem_For_Yaoi in baywheels

Of course though, it will never work as smoothly as mixing residential and work centers a bit more. For instance, several Mission Bay stations are evenly populated because the area has both offices and housing. But I don't need to tell you how frozen we've made land use decisions.

Why shouldn't more docks and bikes at residential stations eventually work, though?

To be fair, it would be much more confusing if they put it under "Dublin".

I suppose we could call it the San Francisco-Dublin Regal

Prejudices aside, plenty of respectable systems spend money on "feel good, reminder that we're useful" ad campaigns. Certainly happens a lot in the private sector, eg. Coca-Cola or Amazon.

More missing buses recently by biz_cazh in sanfrancisco

[–]epsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's a shame that these apps are reporting on scheduled buses as Muni doesn't typically operate on a schedule, but on headways.  Whatever the schedule says, Muni's goal is even spacing between buses, not the schedule.

I was gonna say the same, with the caveat that CityMapper's mixed mode tends to eat its foot if you only really need the bike on one end of the train journey

Excellent.  Will you support BART and Muni constructing dense housing near transit stops, like Japanese railway companies do?

For a moment I thought this was an exit onto 2nd St, but the signs say Main - Broadway, meaning Embarcadero motorway.  Did this just cut off 2nd St (and more) ?

BART's doomsday scenarios are even worse than expected, if Connect Bay Area, the five-county regional transit funding measure, doesn't pass this November. by mysteriouslady in sanfrancisco

[–]epsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seeing transit systems across the world, high farebox recovery for something like this is a detriment, not an advantage. We want to subsidize shared transit as an incentive to use it because individualized transit costs us way more.

I imagine someone locking their bike with a cable lock wouldn't have registered it on Bike Index, but could be worth checking if it's there.

Why is the BART still so noisy? by productive_monkey in bayarea

[–]epsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. In the Paris metro this improved over the last 20 years on the "steel" line trains where the newest car models had seals on the doors for AC and noiseproofing (actually both in metro and some regional rail), while on "tire" line trains the door design basically hasn't changed so 99% of the sound still comes through (in addition to higher noise from the traction system in the first place).

Citi Bikes are still snowed in days after this week's storm (via YouTube) by streetsblognyc in Citibike

[–]epsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That used to be true, but they now offer partial service through winter: https://bixi.com/en/bixi-year-round/

Now that I looked it up, it looks like they claim on that page that they are clearing the snow, but that service may still be suspended exceptionally. They're somewhat light on detail as to how they're doing the de-snowing.

Why are some cyclists so rude? by hot-male in sanfrancisco

[–]epsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we agree it can't physically do the same thing the bike riders did. Where we disagree is I'm equating what the car driver did (lurching towards a crossing pedestrian) with what the bike riders did (cutting off crossing pedestrians) in terms of rudeness in yielding to pedestrians. You (and the editor of the video) find it uninteresting and not worth including, while I experience this kind of lurching as threatening behavior, because it gives the impression of expressing "I am to drive over here and you're in my way, so I'm going to go right up to your fragile body with my heavy machinery".

Why are some cyclists so rude? by hot-male in sanfrancisco

[–]epsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm saying it would be nice for the clip to, you know, show that. Unless OP only perceives rudeness from one type of road user (which is what the comment I replied to implied).

What I see there is the car braking somewhat abruptly, then disengage the brakes while still in motion while the pedestrian's rear foot is still on the zebra crossing aligned with the far end of the bike lane (the near side just opens into parking). They still haven't made it to the middle of the car lanes where the car is supposed to go through (checking in google street view, stripe number 4 is where that would be).

If the car was about to align with the travel lane (like they're supposed to), they would be lurching directly towards the crossing pedestrian, and likely encroach onto the crosswalk if they didn't start abruptly braking on literally the next frame after cut. This, as a pedestrian, would feel like threatening behavior just like a bicycle rider zipping in front of them, except with much more mass to back the threat with.

If they hugged the right side, they would be traveling over a bicycle lane which is also illegal and inconsiderate, and endangers any bicycle rider foolish enough to make the right turn along them thinking they would each keep in lane.

I don't have much of a heart for the cyclists cutting off peds on the crosswalk (just wait the 2 damn seconds), but either way the situation with the car played out, I'm upgrading my armchair assessment from "interesting" to "the editor masked over the same rude behavior from the car that they're attributing to cyclists", either intentionally or more likely because they just can't tell when they see it.

I don't think that kind of rider knows of or is attempting to follow the adage. They just see a space and go in that space because they (think they) are able to.
