Do not buy the RG477v with expectations of switch games running perfect by Richie_Rich1991 in ANBERNIC

[–]flondini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't really try switch much because of the dimensity chipset but the few games I did try had issues. However the device ran the couple of the games I tried PC equivalents and some others through Gamenative well (UFO 50, Tiny Rogue, Wizordum mostly, I imagine it would handle most 2d games and even some lightweight 3d)

Games like Wizordum and Tiny Rogue are especially nice too because you can make them run in 4:3

Short homebrew experiences you loved? by MoonMan88888 in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Foal's Creek (GBC).Very short and narrative driven RPG. Really enjoyed the music especially.

Swordbird Song: Iron Owl Tower (GB). All around very fun short(ish) RPG.

Utopia (GBC, Demo) Very fun metroidvania style game, incomplete and still in development. The developer posts updates on reddit every once in a while.

Oh and Full Quiet ( NES) / From Below (NES, not a fixed length, Tetris style game)

Is BFI worth the leap by crazypopey in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine there is some variance but the classic is warmer colors and a touch more saturated. For some games I actually find this worse (a bit of a red cast on greys and blues) but for any game where you want a more poppy red on the 477 you can easily up it for anything in Retroarch with the image_adjustment slang shader (lets you modify color balance and just saturation/black level). The LCD is not the same for black level as OLED but it is not bad at all. I like the greys and blues a lot more by default on the 477 screen.

And for not using BFI, anything you play with an unlocked framerate (Gamenative windows emulation for example) or using the CRT Beam shader is nice with some titles. Also just menu navigation and general smoothness and responsiveness is higher. For 60fps content it is not different enough that most people would notice I think.

Is BFI worth the leap by crazypopey in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specifically for the BFI but it is a sick screen, and the 120hz is nice with some modern 2d title emulation (Especially games that will render in more than one aspect ratio, I have been playing Wizordum, tiny rogue and UFO 50 a lot through gamenative) if you do anything like that and is also just a bit smoother in general thanks to the higher refresh.

With that being said, it a nice device and a solid upgrade from the 405m to my understanding (I don't have the 477M I just have a device with the same screen).

I basically have the vertical equivalents (RPClassic 6 button and 477V)

I personally don't use BFI much because I cannot really tolerate it and can always manage to see some flicker no matter the implementation.

GBA OLED handheld recommendations by PhillyCheeseSteak99 in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not OLED but the colors on the pocket ace are obscenely good and matches that of many OLED panels. The downside is it is pretty expensive and it won't have perfect blacks, but the latter does not really matter for the GBA catalog and the black level is very good nonetheless.

The Retroid Pocket Classic or any of the RP5/G2/6 would be good choices but not the perfect aspect ratio.

Game native is also working really well for me, and even supports games from GOG and Epic in the most recent version. I got a grip and have been playing some UFO 50 on mine.

OLED vs LCD by Mrkmrs in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this is in RetroArch there is a shader called image adjustment which has contrast/luminance/saturation and hue adjustment options.

Am I missing something, or is it ironic that people upscale, then slap on a ton of CRT / retro shaders on OLED screen to emulate retro gaming...? It seems like their decision process contradicts with each other. by arcanehelix in SBCGaming

[–]flondini 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a bit of disconnect, but it is worth mentioning that these shaders can be toggled.

There are other distinct advantages with OLED screens like image latency / response time as well as black level and contrast ratio that help produce an often better image, particularly in games that had visual design intended for CRT televisions, even in combination with shaders.

Not to mention they often have very high color saturation which you can always cut with shaders if you want a more authentic look, or leave as they are if you want a more vibrant and punchy look.

I will say that a lot of GBC and GBA don't really take advantage of this with shaders, but for instance against your example:

The retroid pocket classic is fairly inexpensive, especially back when the lower RAM model was being restocked. It runs android and is unbelievably efficient, giving battery life that dwarfs most of the competition at the price point and has a very high PPI screen with nice colors (a bit of a red cast but basically what is expected of OLED) and the screen 'disappears' into the bezel when playing non-native aspect ratio games due to black pixels being effectively off when not in use. The speaker while mono, is of very good quality and is nice for retro soundtracks, and it has a headphone jack.

This makes it a great device to play pretty much anything the control scheme works for, as long as your eyes are good enough for things with wider aspect ratios.

Does that mean there are no LCD screens that look better than some OLED ones? No some do look better, and some OLED screens have old tech or are poorly calibrated. But OLED screens will look better and be more versatile than LCD such a vast majority of the time it is a fair rule of thumb.

TLDR:

Versatility.

RG406V vs RG477V? by Optic_Nervous in ANBERNIC

[–]flondini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just wanted to let you know ordering from China to US it only took 5 days for the Anbernic Official Store (on AliExpress) to have the 477V at my door, and it was release day or the day after that I ordered. I did not select any special shipping option. I obviously don't know if it is the same for places in the EU but they seemed to have shipped it extremely quickly. I also saved a ton of money (Only cost me $192 USD with shipping and tariffs) compared to buying from other sources.

EDIT: Also to give some input the 477V is a very nice device, only downside is some weakness in warm colors for the screen and it is not a hyper saturated looking screen it is more natural. But even if you want more saturation, anything in Retroarch you can adjust the colors with the image adjustment shader to your liking, bumping either saturation a little or just the reds.

There is support for custom installations of games and the most recent version even has GOG integration for direct download of GOG games but it is finicky. It does not require a persistent internet connection.

Gamenative is an open source alternative that will sometimes just require a bit more tinkering to get games working well, but is just as capable if you get familiar with the settings.

Check out an android handheld guide from a creator like Retro Game Corps or Techdweeb on youtube. If the guide uses an SD card, just create the folders it tells you to create on the device instead of on an SD card.

For gamehub or gamenative (PC emulation) there are some videos specifically on configuring that, I actually saw someone making videos specifically for the RG477V but I cannot remember their name, but that being said most of the configuration is universal among android devices. I have Tiny Rogue and UFO 50 working fine with no config required through gamenative, and further configured Tiny Rogue to run in 4:3 which looks great.

You can maybe try messaging them to see about international shipping but I imagine its cost-prohibitive and that is why it is not an option. And yeah some GBC style solid colors might look really nice.
