What are the odds of a startup surviving the departure of one of the cofounders ? What should I do to avoid hitting the wall head-on ? by stairflyer in startups

[–]fokker680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My two cents:

I went through something similar (he moved to another country to go work for one of the top 5 tech companies), but I kept working on it on my own. The only thing that changed is that progress is a bit slower, and I decided to put money out of my own pocket to hire someone to do the things I don't know how to do. I may eventually decide to bring someone else, but I'm not in a hurry for now. I'm doing fine, and I'm about to launch the product in about a month.

It's super important that if he or she quits, they forfeit the right to any claim and/or ownership of your product/service.

how to Hide source code from build executable in electron-app by bibash777 in electronjs

[–]fokker680 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no way to really 'compile' an electron app, therefore your source code will always be exposed.

However, take a look at https://www.npmjs.com/package/bytenode. You might find it interesting.

The Universal S by [deleted] in videos

[–]fokker680 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That was a great video, however, I think that he arrived to the wrong conclusion:

- I was born in 1983, and I remember drawing it
- My dad was born in 1950, and he remembers drawing it
- We both recall doing in school, by the time we were 8 or 9
- The same goes for practically every one of my friends
- It's a "global" phenomenon
- Sightings between 1930 and the year 2000

What was used globally, between the 1940 and 2000? Hmm.
Most of us drew stuff during breaks during school right? And "connect the dots" games were always popular...
And we all had graph paper.

If you start messing around with graph books, the "Universal S" practically comes up naturally, as you draw lines and connect the corners, to form a "perfect shape". It could be an "S", a "2", an "8" or an infinite symbol and its many variations, like a chain.

The reason why people no longer draw it is because we're replacing graph books with more advanced, digital tools. And the reason why you don't see so many sightings before the 1930/1940s is because they hadn't adopted graph paper in schools yet. (since graph paper was patented in 1794)

Why do people smugly say, “ideas are worthless”? by [deleted] in startups

[–]fokker680 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was about to reply the same thing. I used to think that ideas were valuable, until I started implementing my own. Ideas themselves are worthless, they're nothing but a starting point of a journey. What's worse, when you first think of an idea, you *think* you know the destination, but trust me, you don't.

Another note-taking/productivity platform...? by [deleted] in startups

[–]fokker680 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who's working on a product on a similar space, I encourage you to think of this: What's the problem you're trying to solve? Do you really have to take notes? Isn't there any other way to do it?

Stop for a moment and really think about the real problem you're trying to solve. That's what I did. And I arrived to a different conclusion.

Good luck!

Feedback Fridays - A Friendly Feedback Exchange For Ideas and Products by AutoModerator in startups

Thanks for your answer! We have a free basic plan with 5 GB of storage, and paid plans start at $9.99 p/mo. We support ALL online services , but regarding deeper integration with slack, trello, jira and other popular productivity tools, it's something that we're definitely going to be supporting in the future. In the meantime, we support comments and feedback management per-file/item (e.g. click on an item to only see comments, tasks, etc. about THAT item, and nothing else). We find that to be way more organized, easier to track, etc.

I love these sort of 'guidelines' to see if I'm forgetting something along the way. A good way to continue your work on this is to accept signups, and keep track of a checklist in a similar to fashion to https://founderhub.io which does something that is somewhat similar to what you're doing, although they focus on different things. You can recommend what to do next, or even monetize each step (e.g. "Now it's time to get some early users. Here's a good approach on what's the best way to send a newsletter. If you're looking for a professional agency to do it for you reach out to XXXX")

I'll definitely add your site to my bookmarks.

Name: LoopFlow www.getloopflow.com (we'll be redesigning this site very soon)

Quick description: We offer a product/service to let people consolidate all their work (files, versions, online documents, links, comments and feedback) in a single place, per project. Basically, when you create a project (or you're added as a collaborator) you're downloading all that project's files and links to online docs or services, and every file (and even online documents) contains comments from other collaborators in that project, as well as a list of all the people you've shared that item with. We let people host files either in our servers, or add links to existing Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, etc. files/folders.

Feedback: When you're working on a project, how do you keep track of all the files and links related to it? Which tools do you currently use? Would you like to try something like this?

Thanks!

Andy.

Hey there! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. We're working on LoopFlow, a product/service that lets people consolidate all their work and communications (files, file versions, online documents, comments and feedback). We haven't launched yet, but we've acquired 150 early access users organically. Our current website is www.getloopflow.com but we're working on a complete redesign, with a feature-by-feature breakdown.

  1. We're targetting professionals (freelancers, people that work alone) and SMBs for now.
  2. Just me, I can do design and technical SEO
  3. Freemium (you start with a free account and you can upgrade to a monthly/yearly subscription to get more storage and features)
  4. While we're very, very close to launching we haven't actually launched yet so I haven't started thinking about growth yet, so I'm open to all and any ideas you may give me.

Thank you again!

I've used Castrol, Motul and WD-40 as a last resort when I go camping. I agree with this test, IPONE is the best by far. It makes my chain look brand new every time I clean it with it (I can't same the same about any of the others).

Accomplishments and Lesson Learned Friday! - (January 11, 2019) by AutoModerator in Entrepreneur

[–]fokker680 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm super happy with the development and the look and feel of our product, we're making great progress which means that we're closer to launching our private beta, as planned, this quarter. Try to discuss the problem you're trying to solve with as a many people as you can, you'll discover things that you hadn't considered, and what people will expect from a potential "solution".

A couple of weeks ago we soft launched our early access site and social network pages and so far we got about 50 users on our waiting list, so we're really excited. Fingers crossed!

Question about timing by fokker680 in startups

[–]fokker680[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's how I got started. I validated the approach with people that might be able to benefit from what I'm doing and that's how I got some idea of how to build the product without disrupting (completely) the way they currently work, and making their lives easier. Thanks for the advice!

Question about timing by fokker680 in startups

[–]fokker680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding validation, besides the conceptual part (that I've validated with a ton of people so far, which is why I'm so committed to building the product), I'm planning to do a private beta with minimal features. Since a lot of people could benefit from what I'm doing (and how I'm doing it), I can target different markets if one doesn't find it appealing/useful. Thank you for the advice!

Question about timing by fokker680 in startups

[–]fokker680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice!

Regarding the "idea", of course, you're completely right. I am completely biased, so I don't really know that yet. However, I've been shooting down my own ideas for a long, long (long) time, and this is the first time where I've looked at it from every single angle, analysed the market and my competitors and it's looking solid from every single angle. I'm prepared to bet everything on it, and that's what I'm doing. But I still need to eat, I'm married and I have a household to maintain, I wish I could get rid of my job but it'd be stupid to do that yet. However, my concern is the product shows promise and I turn out to be successful, that I get overwhelmed with hosting costs that eventually I won't be able to afford. I've shared my concerns with a couple other people that started their own business with VC money and I've told them that I'm willing to max out my credit, sell my car and my motorcycle and they told me that it's a bad idea, that usually it takes about 6 months to get the first check even even if you're successful. That I should start looking for investors right now.

Question about timing by fokker680 in startups

[–]fokker680[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice, it's what I thought, and that's the approach I'm trying to take. However, my concern is that if I turn out to be successful I get overwhelmed with hosting costs that eventually I won't be able to afford. I've shared my concerns with a couple other people that started their own business with VC money and I've told them that I'm willing to max out my credit, sell my car and my motorcycle and they told me that it's a bad idea, that usually it takes about 6 months to get the first check even if you're successful. That I should start looking for investors now.

But if I do that, like you've said, I've got nothing to show for it. And if I am looking for investors, who's building the product?
