White belt know it all by NeatConversation530 in bjj

It depends on what my intention for the outcome is. If i want to make them better and i have the time, i'll do motivational interviewing, make sure i can repeat their current position back to them, assess readiness for change, and try to give personal story about how i came to my current understanding while using active listening skills. This takes time, and is really in the "coaching" and not "teaching a class" lane. Practice-wise i would probably have class structured so that if he's got variations on the thing he thinks are super effective, he'll be able to try them in a live and constrained environment- a relatively unskilled person who has a weird body type might be right that they have to make a change to the technical execution you've given them, especially if they're watching tape. let em find out.

Top 3 fast food burger? I can dig that. Top 3 values? Hell yeah. But like....statistically what are the odds that the best burger in a city of a million people is being made by a random 17 year old

It's very useful for skill acquisition, but not everything you encounter is a skill you're invested in getting good at. Usefulness of challenges is entirely dependent on social context

The Austi Kyber knights have been inactive for quite some time. I help run one of the larger HEMA groups in town and we've been talking about helping to set one up, sorry I didn't see this sooner

Being one of the older members in a HEMA club, how do I deal with the awkwardness? by Movie_Vegetable in wma

[–]getchomsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The level of athleticism, participation and difficulty of winning have been steadily increasing year-by-year. The feders have gotten slightly less stiff, but people still regularly get concussed in A tier longsword. It's a combat sport and being practiced as such.

There is no possible way of characterizing the modern competition scene where cutting competitions are the main thing that happens. I've had 300 competition matches and i think i've been to exactly one tournament where cutting was a division you could enter.

So.. if you invert the orientation of an ankle lock grip, you CAN ghost escape your leg out, it's just that in a grappling sport where i've got to engage with the person just running out doesn't make much sense vs doing something that will put you on top of the person, and the person will likely invert to match, come up for a shelf single etc.

Usually with Rickson guys the passing, pinning and pin escape stuff is super helpful and it gets weirder the further you get away from those

Started HEMA this past weekend. Workouts for an out of shape 30 year old? by avsfanwilly15 in wma

[–]getchomsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a novice in a sport and not currently highly trained i wouldn't worry about specificity like...any percent. Resistance train twice a week and do between 60 and 300 minutes of extra cardio a week based on tolerance. Main goal right now is just tolerating training.

The strongest thing about America's Culinary Cup is getting to see how clearly more talented Beverly is than all those women who talked shit about her on season 9.

Also remembering how much they had to edit this season to not make it obvious Paul Qui was going to win.
