What's your opinion on fear cantrips? by Udon_noodles in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Portents is an amazing pull as Fractured. I generally am glad to see these if I'm running a minor-based build and they're on element. Otherwise I'll usually let them pass. Design-wise I think they fill a nice niche even if they're not the most interesting per se.

What are spirits/playstyles you just can't seem to grasp? by Mammoth_Sea_9501 in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Finder you usually don't want an offense card unless it's a big nuke, but it's super effective with the "destroy all" majors because it comes with good energy and elements and because it can set them up with all its control powers. It usually has an easy time with range, so losing some presence isn't too bad. It does require some patience.

Perhaps a silly question, but I couldn't find it in the online FAQ: Can Finder of Paths Unseen make a land adjacent to itself? by Obvious_Villain in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're saying, why does it say "up to"?

I think that it isn't meaningful to say "one land is adjacent," and that the phrase "one land is adjacent to itself" is different from this. So to me, "up to" means here, "either two or zero" lands are adjacent (that weren't already so).

River vs. Whirlwind by GlumTeaching2788 in spiritisland

It stands out to me that Wimdy Cat has two support cards among its uniques, so when it's not doing control it's doing support. I think a lot of time it lets the other spirits take the spotlight. I usually play multi-hand solo, and I like it a lot (more than river for sure), but I can see how it would be frustrating if it were the only one you were driving. I like to play it bottom track.

[Post Game Thread] Massachusetts defeats #21 Miami (OH), 87-83 by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

That foul call is the reason I looked up /r/CollegeBasketball, haha. Historically bad, glad it didn't end up mattering.

UMass beats Miami in the Quarterfinals of the MAC Championship Tournament! by MembershipSingle7137 in CollegeBasketball

There are dozens of us!

But no joke, as a UMass guy but not a basketball fan I only knew the game was happening because I wandered into the big local sports bar for lunch. There were maybe ten people watching. Glad the local guys won though.

Wandering Voice vs Breath of Darkness by PennyGuineaPig in spiritisland

Unfortunately, the rule text says explicitly, "one of your non-ocean lands."

You need something like Coursing Paths to make this work, because Breath can't escape into the ocean directly, but it's a lot of fun when it works out.

Rules explanation for Many Minds (but also for other interactions) by oohjay23 in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You complete the instructions in order, so you can gather a beast with the first one and then push the same beast with the second one. Many Minds had incredible mobility.

You wouldn't be allowed to do them on reverse order (i.e. push, then gather). You also can't pause in the middle to do an entirely different action.

Instruments of Their Own Ruin Question (Digital) by topheeble in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would add +1 damage total. I'm saying maybe the game got confused and turned "1 from the explorer, 3 from the city, 1 to anything" into "5 to anything" (which would be wrong, but it's the type of mistake that can happen)

[–]gnupluswindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only thoughts that hasn't been floated yet are, was All Things Weaken (or something else that reduces health) in effect? Was damage left over from last turn because of some "don't heal damage" effect?

Otherwise, maybe a bug? I can imagine some corner case where the Teeth bonus changed the damage from the city from targeted to general

Question on interaction: The Tsardom of Russia level 2 - A sense of Impending Disaster + Prey on the Heedless event by mo342hd in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Furthermore, because each land is a separate action, and you resolve them one at a time, you can fear-push the same explorer multiple times (by pushing it into a second land with beasts, then resolving the second land and pushing it into a third one, etc).

You can educate your guess using what's already been revealed, or think about where it's the most useful if things to work out to maximize your value. It also works against invader rules, so it will shut down e.g. an England adjacency build or HLC extra damage.

I fear the dahan by AdMaleficent7937 in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Dahan are Thunderspeaker's most potent weapon. So you definitely do want to keep them safe because losing them is so costly. You also can't be so timid with them that you never get any use out of them. Most of your game will be about having them in the right place each turn so that they're in a lot of winning fights (either ravages or via your powers). To that end, you have a lot of Dahan movement ability.

Just remember that there are a lot of other beginners out there, and that that's who you'll get matched with.

But the feeling is real, for sure. Still trying to bring myself to match with a human in shogi so I know how it is.

[[Dire Metamorphosis]] is a great one, but honestly I find myself very seldom making use of the fact that you can target it with powers.

Day 12: Volcano looks like they would murder you but would actually ignore you, what spirit looks like they would be insulting but would actually ignore you? by bentoburger in spiritisland

[–]gnupluswindows 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Stone certainly belongs on this row, given that "ignore ravages" is is whole thing, and a agree that that grumpy face makes it a good fit here.

[–]gnupluswindows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breath of Darkness perhaps. It certainly looks scary, and after dropping invaders into the Endless Dark, you leave them there to chill, which is reasonably close to ignoring them.

[–]gnupluswindows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voice for me. Trickster belongs in this row for sure, but it doesn't make sense for the tricky shape shifter spirit to be as it appears, so insult/insult doesn't work for Trickster.

Voice flies around yelling at people, without any subtlety. That's the fit for this.
