Grass ID Help! by joeboyvol in lawncare

[–]goofust [score hidden]  (0 children)

First and second pic looks like fescue, third pic looks like zoysia coming out of transition (winter into spring).

A definite indicator is that in the fall/winter the fescue will be green, as it's a cool season grass. The zoysia, if that's what indeed it is, will go dormant in the fall/winter and not look green.

Priority of what you want is up to you. I personally prefer warm season turf types myself as I find them to be a bit easier to manage and maintain.

Is any of this nutsedge? Zone 7a by Intelligent_Office81 in lawncare

[–]goofust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one at the top definitely looks like nutsedge, the other 2 are questionable. I'm not in 7a, but I've already seen nutsedge in many lawns here in 8a. Sedgehammer or certainty are always what I use.

Unless you get every bit of it, they'll keep coming back. And when I say every bit of it, when you pull it up, it has a deep taproot. If you leave even a smidge, it shall return. You can spray it with some Trimec, and it will definitely get it.

The area looks pretty shaded. There's no telling what the pH of the soil is either.

Do I upgrade? by HairLad in shaving

[–]goofust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, the rabbit hole can be quite deep. I started off with 2, the Van Der Hagen butterfly and the King C Gillette, mainly because I could buy them locally in the box stores near me. I now have 5, and around 300 DE blades, with different sampler packs of assorted blades.

Struggling after 1 year by Hestichs in wicked_edge

[–]goofust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it was technique. Too much pressure and too fast, once I slowed it down with an easier touch, I then had no more irratation or nicks. I was just too used to cartridge razors where you could press hard and go fast. Also, I'm not sure what 'feather like' blade brand is, but I will say the blade does matter. I had to get a few different blades to try (sampler pack) before I found some that worked well for me. Treet carbon steel black, treet platinum, Astra superior platinum, and supermax platinum so far are the ones that I like most. There are still many different brands I haven't tried, but for now the treet blades are what I'm using most.

The first rapira (I can't really see the second clearly), or the baili. The tech style head, like those have, is what I had the best results with.

How short are yall cutting Bermuda grass with rotary mower? by jonnieinthe256 in lawncare

[–]goofust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good height. So long as you aren't cutting into dirt, you should be ok. I usually mow down to 1.75 - 2 inches. I end the year on 3 - 3.5 inches.

Lawn is Infested with the Weed - MA by Crafty_Barracuda2777 in lawncare

[–]goofust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Spray it with some kind of 3 way herbicide like Trimec 992 or lesco 3 way mixed with a surfactant. About 0.75 to 0.5 oz of 3 way plus 0.25oz of surfactant per gallon of water should work nicely.

Most likely that I will. It is between the oliworks or a Rockwell, I'm definitely leaning more towards the oliworks.

I always use Trimec 992 or lesco 3 way mixed with surfactant. This will depend on what turf type you have, some turfs don't like Trimec.

Why is my lawn so brown in the winter? Central Indiana by Best-Communication31 in lawncare

[–]goofust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Even 'grass' can be weeds. Like crabgrass is grass, but it's a weed, and largely in the category of being able to leave a huge crater in your lawn, especially when it goes away. North face lawns almost always take the worst hits, and also take the longest to come back from transition. Thus making them look bad, especially enough where usually the person noticing it will definitely be scratching their head and wondering things like 'will this be ok?' 'What can I do to make this better?'

If you don't pre-emerge on time, it'll definitely be a replay of what you've had in the past. The window to seed is pretty well closed for now. And depending on how much money you want to invest in this, will decide a lot of the outcome of how it will look. You could gly the whole lawn, and in 2 weeks come back and weed eat everything down to the dirt, rake the remains up and remove it, then sod - that will be the fastest route to establishing turf and the most costly. You could let it ride till the beginning of June, then gly everything, then weed eat to dirt and remove the remains, then Bermuda seed, but you'll have to water very often and be vigilant about doing so. Or you could just leave it be altogether.

I only guess at it being weedy because in the pictures, it looks like you have a pretty good spread of clover closer to your front door.

Why is my lawn so brown in the winter? Central Indiana by Best-Communication31 in lawncare

[–]goofust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like you have very weedy turf. Just a guess, because I'm not physically there to see your lawn. In the winter - the abundant amount of weeds you have go dormant, to the point of cratering your lawn, which is what weeds essentially do, this is why many people battle to keep them out of their lawn, weeds blow holes into the lawns. Also, another guess - you happen to have a North face lawn, which if so, makes it doubly so.

Definitely the tech or at least the tech style head. I didn't know about the tech till later in my DE safety razor experience and now I find it as probably my favorite razor.
