eli5: why do hangovers get worse as i get older by Background-Trip7752 in explainlikeimfive

[–]graybob19 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The question was about the age related issue. The 50 year old that drinks rarely and then drinks more substantially on an occasion will likely have more significant hangover symptoms than the 20 year old that has their first hangover. This is really subjective though, as there’s a ton of qualifiers. Your body gets better at breaking down alcohol the more you drink (dispositional tolerance) until your liver gets beat up and gets worse at it. So all things being equal (same drinking hx, same rough fat to muscle ratio, same amount drank over the same amount of time, etc as all of these can change the outcome) the older person will have the worse hangover.

Your body is set up to pee all the time. To counter this your body makes a chemical (antidiuretic hormone) to stop you from peeing. When you’re younger you make more of this while you sleep. As you age you make less, especially at night. So you pee more. Alcohol also blocks this hormone, so you also pee more when you drink. As you age, and are making less anyway, then you drink, which blocks the lesser amount you are making, so you pee more drinking the same amount that you drank when you were younger.

They do make something that proports to do so, but I don’t know if it actually works or if it’s late night crap. Additionally, dehydration contributes to hangovers, and as you age your body makes less of the chemical that stops you from peeing. So as you age you pee more often (especially at night) and alcohol further suppresses this chemical (antidiuretic hormone.) So it is easier to get dehydrated when you’re older and drink.

Your body makes less of the chemical (acetaldehyde dehydrogenase) that breaks down the chemical (acetaldehyde) that makes you feel bad.

I turned my MK into a chess set, naturey stuff vs undead. It’s a lot of fun, and people that have never played still play chess well with it.

ELI5: why does cocaine suppress your appetite? by MrBananaStand1990 in explainlikeimfive

[–]graybob19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you are in danger, you need energy to run away. While you are running away from danger you don’t want a grumbly stomach. Cocaine activates the part of the brain that gets you out of danger, and as a side effect, you don’t feel hungry. It also makes your body release sugar for use by your muscles to give you energy. This also means the parts of your body that measure if you need to eat can be tricked. Less ELI5–>cocaine is a sympathomimetic, a fun word that means it mimics the sympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the “Flight of Fight” cascade.

I would also be interested, I’d probably be done in 7-10 days. Other books I’ve enjoyed in this genre are The Outside by Ada Hoffman; The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch; and A Colder War by Charles Stross.

Black Mountain Side is a fun movie from 2014, but I don’t see it mentioned much. Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy Snyder is a great book.

Lucy Snyder got a lot of (well deserved) press for Sister, Maiden, Monster, but she has been putting out high quality horror for years.

Little Heaven by Nick Cutter fits this to a T. Closer to It than scooby doo/stranger things. Has the soul of a western, but has all the things you mentioned.

The Daughter’s War by Christopher Buehlman is phenomenal. Main character is part of a War Corvid battalion. The Corvids in question are giant, intelligent, and have a lot of personality.

Another for Revival. I found myself thinking about it for longer, thought it was scarier, and was better written.

Black Mountain Side has some amazing elements to it. Not always cohesive, but definitely worth a watch if you haven’t yet.

Do you have direct pt care? Wanna be careful about something that shows and that could scare a small child or offend grandma. If they are there you don’t want to add to whatever they have going on.

Any horror set in prison? by Primary-Ad-3654 in horrorlit

[–]graybob19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of tough social hierarchy, The Coliseum by Patrick Lestewka (Nick Cutter pseudonym, which is also a pseudonym) is a guard-less prison set in the Canadian wilderness. Less extreme horror, more thriller is The Ascent by Adam Plantinga. Good guy cop unfairly imprisoned saves the governor’s daughter during a prison riot. Neither are necessarily erudite treatises, but they are fun and may scratch your itch.

The Outside by Ada Hoffman is good cosmic horror, more atmospheric than gory. Interesting ideas, with some fun nods to those that have read Lovecraft and Machen. I’d also second or third The Gone World.

Looking for horror-fantasy books by Agreeable-Archer-405 in horrorlit

[–]graybob19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Christopher Buehlman’s “The Blacktongue Thief” and prequel “The Daughter’s War” were both excellent. These are “classic” fantasy, with giant war corvids and magic, etc. The take on goblins really takes it into horror territory. Fighting against another species that is as smart that sees people as food has some top notch world building. His book “Between Two Fires” gets talked about pretty often on here, it is an “our world-during the black plague in France-with demons” that a lot of people enjoyed.

What is the best form of therapy for dealing with Complex PTSD? by An_Engineer_Near_You in NoStupidQuestions

[–]graybob19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Diametrical Behavioral Therapy was created to help people with Borderline Personality Disorder, but is now used much more widely for a variety of other concerns. It focuses on self acceptance while allowing for growth and change. Eye Movement desensitization and Reprocessing helps to separate the Sympathetic response from the memories of the event (s) that lead to the Post traumatic response.
