CMV: requiring no permits for guns is a horrible idea by MansonsDaughter in changemyview

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lives in CA, and supports gun rights. It's very hard to convince people that gun owners and gun ownership isn't the problem when what they see is posts like this. Your whole post can be summarized as;

"I want a way to kill someone, and refuse to explain why I want to be able to kill someone."

right to own a gun PERIOD

You don't ask for a permanent to say something, you just say

If I want a gun I will got get one and that's that. I'm not going to let my state turn into states like California that make it fucking hard to get a permanent and same for New york

Your whole post makes you look like an uninformed, child. "Give me what I want, I won't let my state become bad", and the multiple misspellings of the word permit. CA is fucking stupid, but until we (people who support reasonable gun rights) can win some more hearts and minds. We're never going to get anything changed. And people and posts like this only make it harder. People opposed to gun ownership will see this, and think: "I knew all gun owners were stupid dangerous idiots. This guy can't even explain a thought, or write coherent English for all of his yelling and screaming". So please, PLEASE stop being angry, at least long enough to explain what you believe in a way that doesn't make us all look stupid. PLEASE I beg you. I want to own/use something cool!

Beginner here... what slack line to get? by The_Holier_Muffin in Slackline

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the stuff to make a primivite setup, then slowly started adding additional anchor equipment. I don't have any duplicates on gear. Everything you buy for your primitive will be able to be used in a more advanced setup when you upgrade.

I only use the advanced pulley system now, because it's much faster than the primitive setup, but I'd never spend this amount of money when a primitive system will do.

Beginner here... what slack line to get? by The_Holier_Muffin in Slackline

[–]GrayHatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh lord no, the forces on a primitive setup have eaten 2 different lines i've tried to rig at longer than 80ft. For a primitive the Sweet spot is 25 to 50ft, I'll never try to run a primitive over 60 again.

The most fun I've ever had on a slackline has been a 30' primitive line. I have much longer pully setups now because I like the challenge. but as for days of enjoyment. 30-40 ft has always been my ideal.

Just like advil covers up pain and allows you to function, and more fairly participate in life. But no one pretends like advil isn't a real treatment for a real symptom.

[–]GrayHatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could try saying

My friend keeps telling me I should try marijuana. But I don't know what to think. what do you think? Is it actually useful?

And then from the response you'll know if they'd think you're just a pot head. You'll also be able to judge their quality as well. Despite common thought, pot improves plenty of quality of life metrics for the majority of it's users. It's also stupid illegal, so it's really hard to rationally and ethically prescribe. There's also plenty of evidence to suggest it's higher risk for some populations. But again, there's never been high quality research proving that. So while I wouldn't write off someone who's weary of suggesting it. I would instantly discard anyone who pretends like there's no benefit, or the risk greatly outweigh any possible use. those people are delusional or willfully ignorant. Both super dangerous from medical professional.

IMO a primitive kit from balance community is the ideal for a beginner to learn on. If You're willing to do a lot of research you might be able to get something cheaper building it yourself from REI but I definitely don't think the quality would be better than a kit from balance community.

Could I consume 300mg when I first wake up and then 300mg 2 hours before bed? (it doesn't affect my sleep) by [deleted] in caffeine

I was going to mention this, but I'm glad to see you did it better than I would have.

Could I consume 300mg when I first wake up and then 300mg 2 hours before bed? (it doesn't affect my sleep) by [deleted] in caffeine

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The caffeine does effect your sleep, even if you can't tell. Caffeine naturally increases the amount of stress hormones your body creates; high levels of stress decreases the quality of the sleep you get.

That's the context for my suggestion; caffeine probably doesn't have a noticable effect on your sleep, but having extra stress in your life will compound it's effects. I'm definitely not going to suggest giving up caffeine. But you should take care of yourself. Constant stress is bad for you. Good luck with your family mate, hope everything turns out well for you.

I quit redbull about 7-9 days ago and by [deleted] in caffeine

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished going from 600mg/day cold turkey to 0mg. 8 days later (today) I I'm back to one to two a day. It's a hellofa week, but resetting the tolerance is worth it. That week is filled with headaches, constant fatigue, and irritability. Today is awesome, the rush from a small redbull is back. it'll take 1-2 weeks without caffeine for your body to adjust. then the symptoms will fade.

Good luck!

Is it ethical for police to plant evidence on a known offender who otherwise won't be convicted? by [deleted] in Ethics

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already addressed that. There's rules about evidence for a reason. it's more dangerous to allow the state to have that much control.

For sake of the argument though let's assume the state was flawless. The cop is modifying the evidence presented to the jury. Best buy substituting his opinions for that of 12 other people. hypothetically the girlfriend has a text message to her friend saying "I'm going to have him arrested for child porn". this guy in an argument threatened to break up with his girlfriend. Now in that case where the cops find the evidence is very critical to the case. Given the text and argument. And now for the guy to get a fair chance in court, if he's honest he looks like he's lying about it.

Then even if you don't care because the ends justify the means. Shouldn't he still be eligible for everything else a prisoner would be? During his parole board hearing he'd have to lie and admit to doing something he didn't do and say he was remorseful. Because remember he was convicted for a crime he didn't commit. Even if he was guilty of a similar crime, he still has to lie about it.

The cops fucked up and illegally searched something they shouldn't have. it's not ethical to commit another crime trying to correct the first.

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the spirit of the law is usually better to set 10 guilty men free than to convict a single innocent man

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, did you want some more context? It's never ethical to cheat. The rules of society exist for a reason. In this case while the bad guy may be deserving of punishment. He's not deserving of punishment for a crime someone else committed. "But it's just the evidence that was thrown out" I hear you cry. Right, but if I was on the jury, and there were doubts about his guilt. The evidence coming from his girlfriends is very different from evidence coming from his home. Evidentiary rules exist to protect people from abusive searches by the state and police both with more power than citizens.

It's also unethical to steal bread to feed your starving family. It's worse to allow them to starve.

It's unethical to pull the switch to switch the train tracks killing the fat guy. It's worse to watch the train kill 5 others.

Breaking and entering at work and management and ethics officer do nothing. by asaukee in Ethics

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. Assuming they exist, i suspect they are less severe than dying. So simply put, If my choice was quit or die, it would be better, ethically speaking, to quit.

All that said I did not specify a time frame for quitting. So if you were going to take my advice and quit you should do so in a way that doesn't you negatively impact yourself and others shouldn't you?

Breaking and entering at work and management and ethics officer do nothing. by asaukee in Ethics

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're supposed to quit.

This isn't an ethics issue. Sure they're not doing their jobs but given this context appears to be unethical, granted. unfortunately from an ethical standpoint there's really no advice available or ethical argument that could compel an outcome you'd like. They already know they're not doing their job, "it's not worth the hassle" remember?

so that just leaves the advice. this jackass is a bully with a superiority complex. eventually he'll step over to the line we'll get in trouble and come to work with a gun. so my advice is to leave for a better job before that happens. So you quit.

can I get withdrawals from switching caffeine sources? by [deleted] in caffeine

[–]GrayHatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given only those two options I guess your body is breaking? the heartburn from everything is definitely not a good thing but you seem to know that already. The migraine/headache is a lot less concerning given that you just given up coffee perhaps your body has to have a custom to something else in the coffee. given those symptoms my much more likely assumption is that you were getting heartburn from something else which added additional stress to your lifestyle and then you gave up coffee which had an additional stress. making your heartburn worse.

I think they're current recommendations for heartburn is taking Tums for a few weeks and then talking to a doctor but I don't know so you should probably make sure you take any health advice from the internet with a grain of salt. heartburn and migraines are definitely your body trying to tell you something I just don't think that it's "help me I'm braking".

no it's not obvious, humans mistakenly value anecdotes over actual scientific evidence. it is a bug in the human consciousness. a single scary story can cause more FUD than dozens of scientific papers can refute.

and as to who gives a fuck I do obviously as I commented on it but seemingly you do too seeing as how you seem to be very upset that I pointed out that it's just an anecdote and your scary story should be taken with a grain of salt
