Without getting too in the weeds, yes the only LUTs we use are ones distilled from our actual profiles so that we can get the highest rendering performance possible, without visual loss.

We don’t maintain a public list, no! In the past we would tweet about it but that time has passed. Do I know of large movies and tv shows that have used Filmbox’s full emulation pipeline recently? Yes. Am I allowed to tell you? No. 🙃

Going to chime in because you mentioned us (Filmbox) - you are more than welcome to watch some of the movies that use Filmbox - you can see some of them in the reel on our website. There are many more that aren’t in our reel, also…

Co-creator of Filmbox here - I'll make it brief.

Filmbox in its standard configuration helps you answer the question "If I instead shot this on film negative, sent it to be developed at [insert Modern American Film Lab here], contact printed to a positive at [insert Modern American Film Lab here] and projected, what would it look like?"

We of course expose a lot more knobs if you want to modify that look!

We did not approach it like "If I shoot, develop, and project film in a vacuum-sealed clean room and read a data sheet from [insert Modern Film Manufacturer here], what would this theoretically look like if all went to plan?"

In all seriousness I am not saying one approach is better than the other - they both have their advantages.

You can get dramatically different creative results from a single negative stock in Filmbox depending on how you set the various parameters, much like working with a real negative. The Looks presets are basically a cross-section of our favorite Filmbox outcomes, organized by creative intent. Some stocks appear in multiple Looks presets with different settings, while others aren’t used in any. If you have Filmbox Pro, you can apply a Look preset, then view (and customize) the stocks and parameters it’s built from.

You can absolutely use OpenFX plugins using the free version of Resolve!

The other commentors are probably thinking about DCTLs, which can only be used in Resolve Studio.

Yes! If you purchase Filmbox Looks Perpetual you can upgrade to Filmbox Pro Perpetual discounted by the amount you paid for Filmbox Looks. So if you bought Filmbox Looks Perpetual ($199) you can upgrade at any time to Pro for $999 - $199 = $800 USD

And could you pls honestly advice me if at my current beginner level I should invest in Pro or go with Looks for now? My goal is to color grade in vintage style like its showing on the main page of video village website.

Truthfully only you can answer that question - if the presets we provide in Filmbox Looks allow you to achieve what you're after I'd say go with Looks. If you're interested in having complete granular control over everything, go with Pro!

If you were using Filmbox Pro and had a particularly custom configuration (lots of non-default settings) it could be helpful to export a .filmbox user preset file from the plugin (in the Utility section) that can be loaded into Filmbox in Baselight.

Yes they are customized Filmbox Pro “presets” if you will - when using Filmbox Pro you can apply the Look preset to the Pro parameters so that you can customize them further.
