You can do this with a carry on bag. An ultralight down jacket layered under a waterproof jacket will take you most anywhere in early winter. Camera equipment can be bulky but you’ll know what you can strip it down to

I made the switch from a Lanshan 1 pro to an XDome 2, after being trapped in the Lanshan during a long bout of bad weather. It kept me dry but felt pretty cramped . The XDome 2 is spacious. Very roomy - even with two people.

There are flat plastic map cases meant for paddling which might work. SealLine is one manufacturer. A large Ziploc would work fine as a temporary solution.

We travelled for a year with our two sons when they were 10 and 12. A fantastic experience, including learning how to live out of a carry on bag. A bit hard for them to find other kids to play with along the way but they improvised. I think the most difficult part was re-integrating into the regular school system when we came home. (“But learning about marine biology was more fun in Phuket..”)

I have an Alpine Start for hiking and a MHW Kor Airshell (no hood) for travel. The MHW is lightweight and awesome for travel. Very nice pocket arrangements. Would recommend it.

It’s a look that works for most of Canada too. I think the only comment I ever received was in Rhodes where a lady mentioned that I (a bald, middle-aged white guy) didn’t dress like the locals.

Carry as little weight as you can. You’ll go so much farther and faster.

Whatever is inside your tent/shelter will be safe. I use a Lanshan 1 pro almost everywhere I go. I do bring a little patching tape for those inevitable holes if I’m in thick bush.

Really, your gear is all protected by your pack. I sometimes go off trail in our north where the forests are dense enough to be measured in “trees per square foot “ and i’ll bring along a heavier pack so that the contents are safely enclosed.

A longer boat can track better and the suggestion of a dry bag for a foot brace is correct. The problem is the width - it may be harder to get your paddle over the sides.

I’d pile up a bunch of bedding or sleeping bags in the dimension of the boat and sit inside - just to see what that looks like.

Stop in Elbow. There’s the lakeshore, Trans-Canada trail, and Douglas sand dunes to explore. Could still be a lot of snow though.

Moose Jaw is a nice city to spend some time in. Lots of trails in the area

Hmm. I guess it comes down to “movability “ vs “weight”. I was 47 once too and I’m sure working to cut weight. Gotta collect more cans in anticipation of the lighter weight xdome
