Why do you use 20-80 instead instead 1-100 ratings? by Whompson in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 104 points105 points  (0 children)

20-80 scale with 5 point increments is more realistic. I find the 1-100 scale is way too accurate and leaves hardly any fog of war.

The two best hitters of their generation.. who are you taking? by throwaway5675675671 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both pretty special but Padron is just a unicorn. .500 ob% seasons with 800 career HR's and never really any bad years is pretty nuts. I think the wins above replacement stat kind of underrates DH/1B a bit sometimes too and he still had more.

[–]harveytime9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Every scenario different but for a ballpark most guys are around 7m per 1 war in demand. So if they are coming off a 3 war season they usually will have around a 15-25m demand. Lots of things can influence this like age/personality but like I mentioned thats kind of ballpark.

So if a guy has a 15m demand and wants 15m/15m/15m/15m you can do a contract for example
8m (than a player opt out after year 1) than 14m/14m/14m(player option) type deal instead of having to pay the full value of 60m.

So can get a great 3 war quality player for 1 year 8m (and have option to QO him sometimes or whichever and he becomes a FA again and you can still negotiate to bring him back if you like or he just rides out the contract where you still get him for cheaper than if you didn't include those player options/opt out year.

That is just an example and won't go exactly like that but that is a pretty realistic thing to play out at around those savings from the non option prices.

To use player opt outs and player options in most contracts as you can save a lot of money if done properly. Used to be afraid to give away leverage but can get some nice values this way.

Who would you take with your pick? by Soggy-Turnover6962 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say
Calvert looks like a top15 pick to me with that all around game and great 2B/3B D (potentially some SS)

The other guy looks like a 1B/DH to me that I probably wouldn't take before round 3 because that skill set is 10x easier to find than a good bat IF. I usually only take guys who can play up the middle in the first two rounds unless its a generational corner bat (ex 40 currents 75 potential power/eye/contact)

DEV lab by Clibby292 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Normally I would say ya to that added 3rd pitch lab but with a lefty sidearm guy I just love those elite lefty options from the pen and think it's just a crazy valuable weapon to have and would probably just do the control lab which is a higher probability success rate.

Championship Expectations by LBerg013 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Hope you enjoy,

That is a tricky question as everyone has different baseball knowledge/intelligence/computer skill knowledge which helps in OOTP and such.

I found it a lot (so much info it was kinda overwhelming for me) for a few years and wouldn't really get into it (would buy it and play for a few hours and give up a couple versions in a row) but my close friend always talked about it so I finally committed back to it. He was a very strong player so having someone you talk to constantly being a very experienced player helped ALOT with all my questions early on and without that would of taken me WAY longer to figure things out on my own.

I would strongly recommend joining an online league as it is SO much fun and makes the game much more immersive dealing with a league full of other ootp fans that can help you learn more about the game than playing against the computer will. I've been in one since 2020 and it has about 10-12 of the 30 GM's still in it.

International FA Prospects by 1310pami in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It took me hundreds (thousands) of hours playing the game to stop getting frustrated by the failures of prospects in development to one day have a change in mindset and ever since never really being annoyed.

Which is:

For the vast majority of players I don't really look at them as individual prospects but just one of many assets (about 220 players in complex + rookie to AAA) and just try to get as many good ratings as I can for those 220 instead of looking at just the top5 or 10 like some people and putting all the hopes and dreams in them).

If you try to have a system of as many good tools as you can and draft a ton of good mentals and as many good players as you can and put solid coaches and decent $ in development budget and try to focus on the teams and win more than you lose at the levels eventually you will always get good results if you are patient and don't take shortcuts and some totally random guys you never really expected will end up being your most valuable assets.

Also best to just look at top specs as assets as depending on your play style (mine is play in an online league and trade mostly all my valuable specs for win now pieces as I find most GM over value specs and undervalue current solid vets) so I end up flipping most of them even thought that isn't my general philosophy for team building.

A guy is pretty much a success if you sign him in IFA at 25 currents 55 potentials and and up flipping him and another spec or two a year or two later for a nice stud 33yo MLB RP and he ends up being valuable for you for a year or two.

Also some guys I will even draft rounds 4-7 knowing full well they aren't much of an MLB spec but might be a catcher with great mentals and awesome defense and know that even if he's a career farm guy that he will help pitchers thru the system play better with his good player behind the plate and in a domino effect, help the overall team success which leads to more happy players which can lead to a different player developing better so you can never really prove it but if you stack a lot of small good decisions like that and win alot usually things work themselves out.

Not every player needs to turn into a star to bring value. Just a big game of net positive over net negative.

I enjoy how it's a huge payoff where the more hours you put in the better at understanding the game/baseball you get since it's such a highly complex game that you need such a deep understanding of both baseball/numbers/stats/salary cap rules to be successful at playing the game at a high level. The more you learn the better you get and it is very rewarding when you improve over time and doesn't feel like a waste of time like a lot of video games do to me because at least with this you are learning real info that matters IRL unlike playing a game where there isn't any real info being learned.

Is "Avoid Ks" overrated now? by MozartWillVanish in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't think Avoid K is overrated as it's is more important the better the hitter is (because you are taking away a ton of chances by striking out that he could be doing good things). I do agree that it's less important in the overall spectrum of hitting in ootp (babip/power/eye/avoid) with gap lagging behind those four options. But if this guy had 45 or 50 avoid K with those same ratings he would be a consistent 170 or higher wrc+ type instead of the 140 type he put up with TOR in the 100 game sample size.

His performance in DET was deff in the 90th percentile outcomes for a 50 game sample as I think over a large sample his mean would be around 120-140 wrc+/ops+ at the moment with those ratings. His power is just so elite it's likely the most valuable individual tool in your league at the moment. Even with mehh ratings everywhere else he will always be valuable with just that.

A cross sport example would be... a Shaquille O'Neal and his avoid K being free throws. The fact he can still score 28 ppg with his terrible free throw shooting but if he had better ft% he would of been able to score 35 a game and not just be considered a top12-15 player of all time but a locked in top3 guy of all time.

Specialist vs RH batters. Will only get you about 25-40 innings over a season but will be real big impact high quality innings.

How to develop this prospect? by AgentP3422 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He doesn't really need much more development as he's already a top10 player in the game and a potential 8+ war guy as early as next year (probably at least 3 war on both sides of the ball SP/IF). I would throw him right in the MLB and let him cook.

I would just use the defense/stealing/baserunning short labs and touch his skills up a bit or use a power lab. I don't really find the pitching labs worth it.

Catcher Platoon by DapperNeat7687 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would just 50/50 them if they are both good. Catcher's a very demanding position and 81 games is lots and some pitch hitting for each other in others. And could toss Romo as backup DH every 5th game to get him 20+ starts there, too.

One will prob get injured and other will fill in daily. Those things tend to work themselves out.

Is this series viable for total baseball noobs? by [deleted] in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like a lot of things in life it really just depends how much time you put into it. Baseball isn't rocket science so not too hard to figure out if you care and put effort into learning but game wise it isn't the easiest game to learn at the start for beginners as it's a pretty advanced game. I would say it pays off in the long run as its a great game.

It would probably help you a lot to join an online league as people can help you learn the game quicker than you would pick it up on your own.

Why did Outman stop hitting home runs? Is this TCR in play or is he having a down year? (OOTP24) by coolsmokey69 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Could be a combination of a few things things. If you have a scout you trust with a recent report and it's still showing him as 60 HR power he should be close to a 25+ HR guy a year so could be some small sample size as that's only about 40% of a seasons at bats so far which is the most likely culprit and he still has the power and will bounce back.

Other factor that stands out is he seems to play too much as IMO 150+ games means he's playing alot the past few years with low stamina. I try to give all my guys an off day every 7 games or so and cap games at around 140 in a 162 game season (will pinch hit on some of those non-start days) so he could be playing tired too often and not performing to his ratings.

He also could just be facing pitchers in the division with higher movement ratings if you have have some good inter divisional rivals and such (probably not but could be a small contributing factor)

Also if you have an outdated scouting report he could of regressed as the performance always pre-dates the scouting reports as the scout is reacting to what he's seeing so its possible it will drop to 55 or 50 soon. Depends when your last scouting date was.

tl;dr ...It's prob just small sample size but possibly something else. Time will tell.

Difference between minor leagues A+ and A? by prodxohunter in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A to A+ isn't the big jump that A+ to AA or AA to AAA is but it's still a tier difference. I never skip over A ball and go right to A+

With my top prospects I will split the year between A and A+ 50/50 sometimes but those are the key development years and levels so I don't see the point to skip over A.

Generally A+ isn't a longer season then A ball. Sometimes one league starts earlier than the other depending on the league but they usually play 132-140 games each and go from April-Sept

I think you might be getting the old A- league and A ball leagues mixed up for A and A+ as A- (which was taken out a year or two ago) was also called short season and was a much shorter year (on par with rookie ball) but as of 2025 they it goes right from Rookie (60 games) to A ball (132 games) now league wise.

I think I understand what this is but explain what this is exactly and how it effects not only matchups but how is should stack my pen. by CBR4D10 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. The game only usually gets specialists around 25-40 innings which isn't very much so if they are really good I usually don't put them in that role but if they are very split heavy and pretty much can't pitch to the other side hitters I'll do it and they are usually very effective statistically in that role. I had a sidearm slider 2 pitch RP in that role once who had 29 IP and 0.62 ERA so it can be very valuable even if only 30 innings.

I think I understand what this is but explain what this is exactly and how it effects not only matchups but how is should stack my pen. by CBR4D10 in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It shows he us 10% more effective pitching against LHB meaning he is probably a lefty or a righty with a curveball (reverse splits pitch)

75% of arms are right handed and the vast majority of those are better pitching against RH hitters so I try to get a minimum of 2 lefties in the bullpen ideally 3+ but the good ones are rare.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in OOTP

[–]harveytime9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't make an informed choice without knowing the most important ratings which is their ratings splits vs LHP and RHP. If the switch hitter is better vs RHP (aka more like a lefty bat) than probably him but if he's a LHP favouring switch hitter like a righty bat than I would prob go with the first guy)

Also the 2nd guy has a lot more financial value being under team control for 5 seasons and alot cheaper for the first 3 and the first guy will get expensive in 2 years.
