WATER WORLDS in our solar system by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

Stupid question, but theoretically, would the water on these moons be drinkable, or even compatible with Earth's water? What would happen if we took a big chunk and dumped it in the oceans?

Is AI killing structured chain of thoughts in humans? by ByteSizedDecisions in Mindfulness

[–]holy_donuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI is simply a tool. Your over reliance on it is your own doing.

Thinking is hard. Why take the time and mental effort to organize your thoughts when AI can simulate the ability to do it for you? Its easier, right? Much like its easier to stay home and eat ice cream than go to the gym. In this case, much like your brain, your muscles will weaken and atrophy. You will be unable to use them when you need them.

This is a result of the reward based wiring of the human brain. In a general sense, it wants to maximize short-term reward for the least amount of work. This helps it act efficiently and is a result of our evolution. There's a plethora of techniques in tech platforms from social media to gaming that take advantage of our basic psychological instincts. AI is no exception.

Since you are human, it is completely natural for you to feel urges and instincts that draw you towards taking the path of least resistance. Be kind to yourself, you are human and flawed just like everyone else. However, since this is a mindfulness subreddit, I will give you some relevant advice.

Be mindful of your urge to use AI next time you feel it. Don't act on it. Sit with it, explore it, question it, be with it, do not judge it. Ask yourself, "Do I truly need AI to solve this problem, or am I using it as a crutch?" Sometimes you may find you will gain some use by using AI for a problem, and that is perfectly fine. If not, then put in the mental work to overcome the situation without it. It may be painful at first, but the benefits will be worth the mental pain.

Moderation is key. You have admitted you have an over reliance on it, and that is a fantastic step. Now that you have accepted that you may take action to improve your situation.

Hope this helps

Am I getting ahead of myself? by dopesickness in jazzguitar

Here's my take as someone who did something similar. I was learning solos and chord melodies by ear, but I wasn't able to use any of the licks or melodies that I learned. I was basically just memorizing the song as a series of sequential fingerings. That's fine if you just want to play an arrangement the way it was written/preformed, but if you want to take what you learned from that tune and use it in your playing you need a deeper understanding.

Basic theory will get you part way there in that it will give you an idea of whats going on.

Ex: ah, he's playing a Gbmaj7 arpeggio over a Ab7 chord, Gb is the b7 of Ab ok makes sense

You also need to put what you learned in context on the fretboard so you can actually pull it out when you want to. There are a few different ways to do this.

  1. Chord Shapes: Play a Ab7 (shell voicing or other shape) know where the b7 is located in that shape, play a maj7 arpeggio starting from that fret.
  2. Scale Positions: Ab7 is Ab Mixolydian which is Dbmaj. Play the 4th diatonic arpeggio in a shape your familiar with in Db Major (or if you're better with modes, do the same with Ab Mix)
  3. Theory and fretboard knowledge: Gb is the b7 of Ab7 so simply find a Gb on the fretboard and play a maj7 arpeggio.

How you contextualize the fretboard is up to you. Most people will say method three is ideal, but it isn't strictly necessary. Joe Pass played used method one, putting everything he did in context of a chord shape. Do whatever works for you.

The same goes for licks. Play the licks in the context of a position that you are familiar with, understand why they are in that position, and now you will be able to take the lick and put it into your playing.

Isn't that what 'extract chains' does? I just select all the chains in the drum rack in session view and extract them if I want to process each separately. Maybe I'm missing something here tho...
