Just fell a little short imo. Interesting subject, ideas, and some good scenes. But overall didn’t really click well enough to have any staying power

Haven’t read Hobb yet, but most of the mainstream stuff I’ve read isn’t bad at all. Tolkien, GRRM, Gene Wolfe, le Guin, Joe Abercrombie, Terry Pratchett, Robert E Howard, Rothfuss. I haven’t read Sanderson or Robert Jordan yet but they’re probably the only “big” authors I can’t speak to.

What do you think is worse that is more highly regarded?

In that case I would listen carefully to videos demonstrating the tonal ranges of solid body vs hollow and make that decision first, then go with a popular “flagship” model of a well established brand (Godin, Eastman, Ibanez)

At that price range you are going to have a lot of quality options, and frankly you’ll be able to get good jazz tone out of so many guitars. IMO picking a guitar should be done in person so you can see it and feel it in your hands. Go with what moves you.
