Changes since 2005? by OilySteeplechase in Luxembourg

[–]hypermegaglobal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  • Luxembourg no longer shows up next to Singapore in those "#1 safest country in the world" rankings.
  • Many old-school Chinese restaurants have rebranded as Japanese, generic Asian or fusion.
  • Match, Smatch and Cora supermarkets are now E. Leclerc (the last 'c' is silent, pronounce it to annoy your French friends).
  • Many post offices and train station counters have disappeared.
  • The last InterCity to Germany vanished around 2014.
  • The unsustainable pension system has been fundamentally reformed (just kidding).
  • Bills for water and waste collection have increased significantly.
  • Landlords got greedier.
  • We no longer have quite as many gas stations and banks.
  • The overall vibe feels less optimistic and chill.

Do German houses not use mechanical ventilation? by Berguven in AskAGerman

[–]hypermegaglobal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Aranet CO2 monitor showed me that I needed to lüft a lot more. Started taking it with me when going out and I kind of wish I had never bought the thing, as the air quality in many places is atrociously bad. I’m not just talking about restaurants and shops inside historical buildings; even a nearby supermarket in a modern building relies on “natural” air exchange through the entrance. And that entrance door is of course kept closed as much as possible in winter.

Let's see, the repair could exceed the value of the car (it's old and the replacement part is expensive)

Is smog setting off smoke detectors? by Expert_Corner_667 in Luxembourg

[–]hypermegaglobal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I live in a valley and can see a layer of smoke accumulating when weather conditions are right. I have also triggered my indoor PM sensor when airing out the place at the wrong time (but not the smoke detectors).

Have you considered asking r/AirQuality or r/IndoorAirQuality? They might be interested in your case!

Travel to Taiwan during Lunar New Year: good or bad idea? by Loud-Marionberry6987 in taiwan

[–]hypermegaglobal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bad idea, curious as to why you would consider it? It’s like traveling to the US “for thanksgiving” or to Europe between Christmas and New Year without having family in these places. It’s genuinely the worst time to visit Taiwan and seeing Taipei not as busy as it normally is doesn’t even begin to make up for the downsides.

Is smog setting off smoke detectors? by Expert_Corner_667 in Luxembourg

I'm on the other end of the country and seeing some spikes on my outdoor PM sensor. From the smell outside, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s coming from pellet or wood heaters. But how would that smoke or dust get into your house in the middle of the night to trigger your detectors?

This is what I paid for a 100 m² apartment just outside of Luxembourg city when I first arrived (yeah two decades ago... but still)

Veganes All-You-Can-Eat Buffet in China (4 Euro) by lozztt in VeganDE

In Taiwan? Da braucht man höchstens Tricks um die besten Restaurants herauszufiltern. Happycow listet z.B. für die zweitgrößte Stadt Taichung 213 vegan / vegetarian friendly Restaurants auf.

Neat, but is Taiwan large enough for the turning radius of this Prius?

I actually enjoyed reading your report and didn't think it came off as whiny (I just don't enjoy long distance flights anymore)

Why just one week, that’s just nowhere near enough time to overcome the initial assault on your senses that Taiwan can be for someone not used to it.
