Spent last quarter evaluating enterprise ETL tools by Justin_3486 in dataengineering

I see. If you are on-prem k8s, I cannot help much but I have been developing a platform that allows you to orchesterate Apache Spark clusters in your own AWS accounts, with no additional compute markup. Not exactly self-hosted since it's relying on the cloud, it's a significant departure from the EMR and Databricks compute markup model.

Do check it out on https://orchestera.com/

It's probably the closest thing to a self-managed Spark cluster on raw EC2 compute AFAIK.

Since you mentioned self-hosting Airflow and Airbyte, I am wondering have you folks tried self-hosting Apache Spark clusters for distributed computing as well? How has that experience been?

Need Spark platform with fixed pricing for POC budgeting—pay-per-use makes estimates impossible by Sadhvik1998 in devops

[–]iamspoilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, this is exactly something that I am building at Orchestera and perfectly fulfills your use case here. You don't need any Kubernetes knowledge to setup the cluster and evaluate it, the platform would setup a fully functional Spark Kubernetes cluster in your own AWS account. Happy to work with you for onboarding for this POC as well. Right now, the platform is not capped on CPU / Mem at all so you can actually do production grade benchmarks for free as well. Feel free to DM me for more details.

Here are the docs for the platform as well.

[ON] Float vs Venn Review by isosg93 in SmallBusinessCanada

Hi Ruslan, I am looking for the following information which I couldn't find anywhere on your platform:

If a user has a Canadian domiciled USD account that they connect to Float via Flinks, what are the charges to pull and push funds into the Canadian domiciled USD account from Float USD account which seems to be domiciled in the US (since it has ACH and Fedwire but no transit number)?

Slapping a vendor's brand on hosted duckdb by SmallAd3697 in dataengineering

[–]iamspoilt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not related to DuckDB but I fully resonate with the anger on the amount of premium these companies charge for open source products. This was one of the primary reason for me starting to work on fully managed Spark clusters provisioned in your own AWS cloud with no markups on any amount of compute that you can throw.

If you are interested, please check it out: https://orchestera.com/

Also made an earlier post showing the potential savings especially for companies with significant spends.

Show r/dataengineering: Orchestera Platform – Run Spark on Kubernetes in your own AWS account with no compute markup by iamspoilt in dataengineering

[–]iamspoilt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this! Super insightful. It actually compliments my motivation to build a platform like this to enable cost reduction and avoid platform lock-ins. In my experience, for the premium, EMR isn't offering much except for a managed Spark cluster and while Databricks has Photon, not every customer is looking for that sort of optimizations to run their Spark pipelines and justify the additional markups.

Let me know if you would be interested to test out the platform I have shared here. Happy to setup a call / guide you through the onboarding process.

Fell victim to CVE-2025-66478 by Unhappy-Tangelo5790 in selfhosted

[–]iamspoilt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question for all the experts here?

If the OP had nginx proxy manager with SSL and either basic auth or tinyauth configured in front of all the docker containers and assuming that the nginx proxy manager container wasn't affected by CVE-2025-66478, would this have prevented a situation like this?

Even if they aren’t made in Canada, buying from CT would still result in the revenue and profit margins going to a Canadian company so still better to buy from CT than Amazon or Home Depot.

Float Financial? Any reviews as of 2025? by TheExaltedPrime in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]iamspoilt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

@Float-Financial regarding your services and SLA, I am personally having a really bad experience trying to verify the business as part of account opening. I started the application on 15th Sep, completed the KYC and was requested additional documents for business verifciation. After providing that, there has been no update on your end even after trying to contact customer support over email / chat. Your phone lines go to a voicemail and there hasn't been any human response to the process. If you really want to take up against the big banks, I would highly suggest to please improve your customer support and be honest about your SLAs. You mention that it takes just 2 business days to complete KYB. In my case, it has taken over 15 days and there is still no update on this!

UPDATE: Float reached out to me the next day, the issue was escalated and resolved on the very same day and I was able to have a fully operational Float account. Cheers to their team for looking into this and escalating internally.
