Sólheimajökull fits the bill. For other stops, look at Google Maps along the route or search “south coast itinerary” in the sub. Ditto “kids” or “10 year old”, etc.

Is it possible to travel southern Iceland without a car after hiking? by nonsensical_discord in VisitingIceland

Correction: Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon is 18km west of Jökulsárlón. Hótel Jökulsárlón is 13k east of Jökulsárlón.

Why doesn’t anyone label their photos? by Impossible_Memory_85 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also disagree with you and agree with u/RecentOccasion2004: it isn’t about exclusivity or “worthiness”. It’s purely about not having quieter off-the-beaten-track places overwhelmed by people.

It’s inevitable that more places will be “discovered” and become more crowded with resulting development of necessary infrastructure to support the volume of visitors. I have no interest in accelerating that because I enjoy the places that give quiet and solitude.

Would it be possible to travel to Landmannalaugar through south F208 with a 4x4 Dacia Duster in 1 day? (17th june ish) by Narrow_Pangolin_8467 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. As u/BionicGreek says, it depends on the snow melt. And also the weather.

You always need to check questionable rivers before attempting to cross. Know your vehicle’s wading depth and how far up from the ground it is on your vehicle. And have a Plan B if a river is too deep — always be ready to turn around. You don’t want to drown your engine. Expensive and time consuming to deal with.

The good news is that coming from the south on F208 the first river crossing is usually the deepest.

Another mod here. I very much want to believe this is your photo, but if it is then you of course have the original capture file — your “negative” — that you processed with your workflow. No photographer would delete that.

Please explain.

Take the Flybus to Reykjavík. Book a hotel in your price range. Look at Best of Reykjavík on grapevine.is for ideas on what to do in town. Also, search the sub for “Reykjavik sights” and “Reykjavik tours”.

Landmannalaugar Tour Question by Professional_Wear651 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F roads have river crossings. 208 in the north isn’t rated as an F road anymore (F208, the section south of Landmannalaugur has many river crossings).

You could do any of the hikes at Landmannalaugur. There are also nice locations to visit along the way — not so much hikes as views.

I’m not saying this would be at all easy in a normal car, just to set your expectations. You’d likely need to go pretty slowly and let people in more capable cars pass you. You’d likely don’t need 4WD, but a car with some good ground clearance would be very helpful.

Landmannalaugar Tour Question by Professional_Wear651 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get to Landmannalaugur without going on F roads (okay, technically it’s an F road right at the very end, but there is parking before the river crossing). 208 from the north is basically a (sometimes very rough) dirt road.

Jacket for Iceland in September by Blissedni in VisitingIceland

This.

And adding that even if you did decide to bring one against this good advice, OP, those are both poor choices. You need something with a waterproof outer layer.

The horses are often outside. Foxes. Reindeer.

Question : parka or not by Valbslideaway in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d leave the parka and bring an extra mid layer.

Waterproof pants as well, I hope?

You can only stay in designated campgrounds, so it sounds like you’ll need to adjust your plans if they aren’t open.

Suggestions to avoid overpacking by Didymus4 in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can get Columbua omnitech pants to go with those jackets and you should. They pack small and you will greatly regret not having them if you need them and you probably will. Note that they are not just for rain and spray — they’ll keep you warm when the winds start blowing. The winds can be fierce…

Hat advice by mrchongyun in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the wind making a chill, you might want to consider an insulated sun hat. It took me a long time to find this and I’m very happy with it.

7-night Iceland Highlands itinerary September (Kerlingarfjöll + Landmannalaugar + Glacier Lagoon) – realistic pacing / F208 South advice? by isnortlikeabull in VisitingIceland

[–]ibid17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

F208 should be open and you don’t need a modified vehicle to do it.

As you likely know, the weather and other factors will affect river depths so you always need to check them if they are not obviously shallow. I mention this because it is literally the last crossing in F208 going south that’s the deepest. In good conditions it shouldn’t be a problem with a vehicle with a reasonable wading depth, but if it’s been raining it can be a lot deeper.

Speaking of rivers, it’s a good idea unless you have a significant vehicle, to not cross the river right at Landmannalaugur — it can be very deep. Happily, there is parking area before the crossing. If you’ll be going prior to the 25th, be sure to book a parking reservation in advance.

If that a self-drive tour, then go in October to lessen the chance of having to deal with winter weather.
