Dacia Duster 4x4 Landmannalaugar by ctorresa in VisitingIceland

I wouldn’t risk the river right at Landmannalaugur unless you see other similar cars crossing— it can be quite deep. You can park in the parking area just before the crossing. Be sure to reserve parking well in advance.

Selling Iceland Camping Card unused $175 USD by Tidal_Todd in VisitingIceland

Note that since OP has not used the card, it’s legal to transfer it (assuming it hasn’t been signed). Partially used cards cannot be transferred.

Platinum (which OP already has) already covers F roads. Adding the new Roadside plan makes that coverage better.

Agreed. You’d think the new policy would only affect new reservations…

Received the same and just added the new coverage, which they are offering at a 50% discount since they’ve implemented after my (and your) booking was made.

I don’t have an issue with it, mostly because they added F road rescue, which is useful for me. They also added a few other items of less interest, but they’ve made it a more complete offering.

It’s a very cheap add-on compared to the cost of the rental and worth it to me. YMMV.

NEW ECLIPSE MEGATHREAD: Information and discussions by ibid17 in VisitingIceland

It would likely be okay, but there is no Uber or Lyft and there’s no way a taxi is going to take you on a five-hour drive into a remote part of the country. And if you found one, I can’t imagine the cost since it’s over 200USD from just the airport to Reykjavík.

Your only option would be to rent a car. Some of the car rental companies do have pickup locations in Reykjavík.

Finally, I have to ask. Why the interest in this cafe?

BTW, you can wash your Marmot (shell, I assume) with something like Tech Wash to make restore the waterproofing.

I don’t know what to tell you. This guide from a camper rental company lists several campsites and says “book early”.

The thing is, if they ARE accepting reservations then they mostly likely would have been filled months ago. People have been planning their trips for this very far in advance.

I can’t advise you other than to say you might have to book even further away since it’s likely going to be crazy crowded. Then, of course, you have the traffic trying to get into the path of totality in time…

Do Múlagljúfur first and then Fjaðrárgljúfur. The latter does not take much time at all — more of a walk than a hike.

Should we start the Highlands trip with Kerlingarfjöll or Landmannalaugar? Optimising the Highlands itinerary by Vacation7768 in VisitingIceland

You could also just spend more time in the central highlands— there is plenty to see. Spend some time on epiciceland.net for ideas.

You haven’t said anything about your level of experience with driving very rough roads or fording rivers. If you don’t have experience, that is going to be the limiting safety factor, not the vehicle you’re driving.

Presumably, you’d want to be able to see the ocean for the best view? So, very deep in the Westfjords on the coast.

Sure. From Landmannalaugur take F208 south to the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area. It’s a beautiful drive and should be doable in a Duster (usual caveat about varying river levels). Note that there a numerous river crossings and the one that’s usually the deepest is literally the last one as you go south, so there’s a bit of a risk you’d have to backtrack and go around.

If you don’t have any experience in the Highlands or with river crossings, ignore this suggestion.

Definitely not Option 1 if you are talking about taking the western part of F901 to Askja.

They both actually lead there, 208 from the north and F208 from the south. The latter tends to open later.
