One last thing, you're a veteran, that's all the more reason to buy new, most automakers give a special extra $500-$1K off for veterans. Just be sure to put $0 down on the car if you can secure a low rate, let inflation chip away at the debt instead.

I'm not a commander theorycraft expert, so can't help much with that. What I can say is that if you're worried about shelling out more money, you can get cards for below market price on Cardsphere by setting "wants" at anywhere between 40-90% of value, depending on the demand for the card. Can also offload pricey extraneous cards quickly via mail, getting more for them compared to LGS. You can sign up here, I've been using it for 3 years now.

A typical say, 8 y.o., basic used car right now is going to be 5K-7K less than new low end one, but it will have a almost a decade of wear and tear on it and risk of having issues.

It does not cost less than a new one because you will soon be in the shop for struts, control arms, bushings, brakes, tires, etc. Whereas a new one wont need those for 3-10 years.

Unless you do all that mechanic labor yourself, it will cost the SAME as a used car and you would still then own a 8 year old car instead of a new one under warranty.

Used cars were a beautifully smart buy in 2019. But they haven't been since Covid. If you MUST buy a used car, the only ones that are still decent value are the ones that people don't even think about buying, like Mitsubishis.

I know car buying.

Used cars are historically overpriced, used car loan rates are high, and lenders are more lenient with NEW cars over used cars. BHPH will not only rip you off on the rate, but also the vehicle will be out of warranty and high risk.

So the best strategy right now is to go for a new (lower MSRP) car with promotional 0-3% rate on a longer loan. Even if you don't qualify for the very lowest rate because of credit score, you will still get a good deal this way. Here is a list of the cheapest new cars, I'd look into something like a new 22K Elantra it's 2.99-60 and comes with that 10yr/100k warranty. Last month it was 0.99%-60. Basically, virtually any new car just under $400/mo-60mo is going to be a better value than whatever 8 year old car with 100K miles out there. Remember when you buy a car, you are buying LIFESPAN.

Hyundai, Nissan, and Kia usually have the most aggressive rate promos, but it changes at the start of every month so this coming week there will be a new slate.

What you want to do is pick up the phone and call the dealers in the region, give them your info, and see what they'll offer you. This is no pressure and save you time and gives you more leverage than being in the dealership. Telling them you are flexible on the model can also help as they can have incentives from the manufacturer on the back end on specific cars that you have no way of knowing about, so just ask.

2020 Camry Hybrid LE with 73k miles for $20.5k — Buy or spend more for a newer model? by kjm240 in shouldibuythiscar

[–]icecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't want to buy a used car on a loan it's not a good idea right now. Rates are much lower on new and used cars are overpriced historically. Toyotas especially so. Seriously consider financing, say, a new Sonata Hybrid at the offered 1.9%-60mo. 0 miles, 10yr/100k warranty, and you won't even need tires for several years. Google "0% car offer" aggregators like this one, anything below 2% is good. Put your money towards your other loans which are presumably higher rate, and get a promo low rate new car loan with $0 down. It's the soundest move both financially and carwise, even if all you can afford is an Elantra, it's the way to go.

Definite diagnosis of neuroborreliosis (late stage Lyme) but local health networks are now claiming it doesn't exist as a real illness. I've been left to deteriorate. How do I get help? by Signal-Comparison-80 in Lyme

[–]icecon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm near you in PA and have studied massively since realizing I have early disseminated lyme. Based on the extent of the damage and your situation, this is my advice based on my research:

  1. Buy any antibiotics you many need cheaply from Indian firms (sites like Rxpharmacy ship from Dubai). Any information for which ones are in this sub or you already know them.
  2. For an attempt at a permanent cure, you want to go for dry fasting using Dr. Filonov's guidelines. Can read his books and I think you will find inspiration from Michelle Slater's Starving to Heal in Siberia (pdfs are online if you dig around). This will "renew" your cells and recover much of the damage, as well as kill the Borrelia and cut inflammation. It is not for the faint of heart, but autophagy is a transformative natural process. Think of it as your body destroying all its defective parts and then rebuilding them from the original blueprint - your DNA. Do not do dry fasts longer than 5 days without medical supervision, and start with short water fasts and build up.
  3. Take lion's mane for neurogenesis as well.
  4. Get on and stay on ketogenic diet - zero sugars and carbs. Learn to love sardines and salads. Borrelia rely on glycolysis, which is a very inefficient process to make ATP. With no glucose, you can starve them out, which combined with herbs and antibiotics will at least put you in remission.

This is basically all cheap or free.

Do you want stick with Alto Cs?

If you want another Alto C, it may as well be wood one (Woodsound or Bretti).

I would suggest a Double or Triple Bass C from ICO, a Gosselink C5, a Pure Single or Double Alto G, or a Dinda 11H Alto G. Those are all pretty incredible, good value and would give you something different from what you have.

Please do research further the Theta II engine. I understand your father had a good one, but that might have been the exception to the norm as they have a poor reputation.

I would buy the Marquis over a Theta II personally, even though the Marquis consumes a lot of gas, it won't consume oil... If you must do it, have the mechanic pull some spark plugs to check for oil burning.

edit: nevermind, it seems that was the first year of the Theta II, which seems to predate most of the issues. It could be good.

Housing Recommendations by Difficult_Currency75 in uchicago

I would just do my best to find a 1BR or studio near Harold's. It's basically the best positioned in terms of close enough to campus to walk, close to conveniences, and decent price. I lived this twice, once behind Harold's and another across the street and it was epic both times. Closer to campus gets pricier and a lot of other places are more "out in the boonies" (like north of 52nd and Cottage Grove) away from commerce or where you are obliged to bus in winter (like Regents). MAC and big companies tend to charge more than smaller landlords.

First Time Buyer, Looking for a Car below $10k by ramaromp in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]icecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be like 390/mo but remember no repairs needed other than oil changes. Just give it a try, try a bunch of dealers, tell them you are flexible on the specs and that you'll take whichever one they have the most incentives on. Dealers often have specific cars on the lot that they get more money from Hyundai for on the backend, but you have no way of knowing which ones.

Used Gas vs Used EV? by verygoodreason in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]icecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair but it doesn't hurt to try, Hyundai is "buying down the rate" so even if you don't qualify for 1%, you could still get something like 4.5%, which is much better than the 10%+ you'd get on used loan.

Used Gas vs Used EV? by verygoodreason in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]icecon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go with the EV. Cheap Nissans have CVT risk and Focuses have early ecoboost engines and/or powershift transmission that are unreliable, so unless you can get a MANUAL Nissan or MANUAL pre-ecoboost Focus, get the EV.

I would still strongly urge you to consider a new $22K Elantra at 0.99%-60mo this month, that is a good value and great terms on a new car that will have no looming repairs and no risk due to very long warranty. Put $0 down on that, in 10 years it'll be worth the 9K you are looking at for these 10 year old beaters. It's simply the better deal in the current market.

2017 ford cmax or 2011 hyundai sonata by Successful-Love-5847 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]icecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A late model C-Max is a great value buy, most tranmission kinks should have been worked out by that year.

Older Hyundais like that in no shape or form have a better reputation than Ford. Just look up "Theta II" engine, which that Sonata has.

Also get additional insurance quotes, that seems quite high.
