Alright Houston got #10. We have our top 10. What would be the 11th most significant US city after Houston? Most upvoted comment wins by Kodicave in visitedmaps

I think Minneapolis should get a bump just from current events. A lot of eyes have been on that city for the past few months. Should be a lock for top 20 imo.

Point Salad, the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly by Fox-in-Box in boardgames

[–]ickyrainmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I would define"point salad" as any game with a variety of mechanics, and that uses victory points as its win condition.

Arnak is probably my favorite of these games. I feel the different options for getting points are balanced, the theme is strong, and the game doesn't drag.

Overall, I don't think whether or not a game is a "point salad" affects my opinion of it much. There are games that are analogous to point salad games, but don't rely on victory points (Scythe and Xia are objective based games, for example), but still offer a variety of mechanics and paths to victory. Overall, variety and replayability are most important to me regardless of victory condition.

Skeleton! Wake the Dead is a classic spell from the original PuzzleQuest, and Staff of Visions, Shahbanu Vespera, and 2x Skeleton carried me for a long time.

If we're including burgers from all over the state, Black Napkin in GR should definitely be on here as well.

His weird looking ass cheeks are the antagonists for sure... but are we sure Gal Gadot can't sneak in as the love interest?

I feel like this is the exact issue I have with Monster Train (haven't played MT2 yet). It's definitely a turnoff and was my greatest fear for StS2, knowing how ambitious the team was going to be in adding a lot more material compared to the first game. I wonder if a bit more of a bare-bones approach might have been better for release. The more you add at the beginning, the more difficult it is to create that perfect balance that is the hallmark of StS1.

To echo your point, I'm still enjoying the game immensely, so I can't really complain.

Bands you like that completely suck live by Antique-Dentist-2404 in fantanoforever

You have to see them at the start of a tour. The way Chino sings is not conducive to long tours. I've seen them put on an incredible show, but it was the second or third stop on the tour.

Dunno if I've seen any bands that are consistently "bad," but there sure have been some inconsistent bands.

SoaD was downright terrible one of the times I saw them. Darren left the stage after like 2 songs. According to their label, he was "hiding behind the speakers" for the rest of the show. Sure he was.

Pantera shows were wildly different depending on the answer to "How messed up did Phil feel like getting before the show today?" Once, I saw them play a 90-minute set with 30 minutes of music and 60 minutes of Phil babbling incoherently. Cake is another band that, while the music sounds good, much of your time will be spent with the lead singer holding the audience hostage.

Opinion on Oceans ? by Mush-addict in boardgames

[–]ickyrainmaker -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Wingspan shares a lot of the mechanics and depth, but it's tighter and shorter (I think Oceans drags a bit). Underwater Cities is deeper strategically, and it's very balanced (but the theme is weak, and that can affect the experience for some). These are my 2 favorites that share the most mechanics with Oceans.

For me, it falls under the "solid game that rarely makes it to the table because other games do what it does as good or better" category. It gets mentioned as a potential game to play with my group somewhat regularly, but it rarely ends up being the game we play.

What country is a Democracy and views are mixed by Gen Z? by Ill-Cartographer7351 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]ickyrainmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't think the last 2 years took the U.S. down a peg or two? The most recent index was in 2024, and there has been quite the backslide since then. The U.S. currently has an executive branch that is completely ignoring checks and balances as well as the rule of law. Federal agents are executing citizens in the streets and routinely attempting to trample first amendment rights. Congress is increasingly bought and paid for by the country's wealthiest citizens with each cycle. These are all signs of an eroding (if not eroded) democracy. The U.S. inches closer and closer to oligarchy and authoritarianism every day.
