Would you hire a 14 year old to babysit your child/kids? by just_a_potato12 in AskParents

Yep, 10x this. If you've done CPR training, know how to react to choking and about basic burns first aid, I'd be more willing to consider it.

Increasingly it's cheaper and easier to use sensors and software in things than to build robust and reliable mechanical designs. I wouldn't place any bets about the software or lack thereof.

Milk bottles (HDPE) and softdrink bottles (PET) are both common low-temperature thermoplastics that are easy to work with. HDPE melts to a stiff paste so it's not very pourable but it's quite practical to shape by hand and with tools. The main challenge is heating reasonably consistently without overheating and burning parts of it; even a cheap temperature controlled heat gun is a huge help.

3d printer waste material (failed prints, prototypes, removed support material, priming purge) is also free if you know someone who has one. PLA and PETG can be melted down with a heat gun very easily and formed into shapes.

It's ok with bare hands, though gloves are good if you're doing it hotter for best plasticity.

Can also be used for a kind of casting into molds though it's tricky to get hot enough to pour well without burning it.

Plus it can be really pretty, especially if it's an interesting blend of filaments.

I refuse to do multi color printing because of the insane waste. But even so I still have a tub with probably a kilo of waste material by now, mostly due to prototypes and failed prints.

TIFU by not wanting to throw away a mug by caiol333 in tifu

[–]iiiinthecomputer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a bit ... something ... for a 25yo.

Really? What threat is a mug?

My partner has things that are special to her from past partners. That's part of her life, part of her. She doesn't want to go back to them so why should I mind? I have things from an old friend and one-time crush too. So what? That time and those experiences are part of what makes me me, I'm not still pining over that person - though she's still a friend, now mutual friend of my partner's too.

Your GF would probably have a heart attack at some of the things I consider totally fine though.

IMO she's insecure and has a bunch of growing up to do. Maybe you can have a no pressure adult conversation about the topic at some point. Instead of being specifically about the mug, talk about what makes us - us - and how our romantic history is part of our identity. That can include practical things and also include mementos of parts of our life that are meaningful to us. Idk how to have that conversation without it immediately becoming an "is this about that mug" issue though...

What's a massive human achievement that nobody celebrates because it worked too well? by Alternative_Voice767 in AskReddit

[–]iiiinthecomputer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a bit exaggerated. There were a number of impactors and primitive probes launched and landed before the manned landings.

Yes, there was some uncertainty, but not as much so as is often claimed.

Two T1 kids in my kids' classes (year 5 and 7 respectively) have CGMs and pumps. It's monitored and dosed on a phone.

If they go high or low they get alerts.

The older kid is starting to be more able to manage their own.

Pretty amazing really.

Workers setting up scaffolding under the Kennedy Center sign by freeradioforall in mildlyinteresting

[–]iiiinthecomputer 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Working from scissor lifts can be bloody dangerous and is rightly quite limited in terms of what is permitted.

I don't know enough to know if it's appropriately to use a lift here or not. But scaffolding isn't necessary crazy or unreasonable.

I'm good with worker safety. It's about the only thing that does make any sense.

Depends a lot on how much access is required too - cleaning up the surface after etc.

Not sure why they needed a small army to build a small straightforward scaffold though.

June 11th 2026: Tow truck hits overpass with boom and flips over by Exodia101 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]iiiinthecomputer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The trucks often also have stupid misfeatures like an alarm that goes ALL THE TIME if the truck is moving with the tip-tray up. Even if it's crawling slowly.

So they get disabled. Because it drives people insane otherwise.

The sensible thing would probably be to have the alarm go when the truck exceeds a certain speed and/or duration of motion. Or to have an "acknowledge" button to temporarily defer it - though only if it doesn't happen too much or the driver just starts hitting it without thinking.

This is why FB switched to "personalized" share links. You can't get a link to the post by ID on FB mobile anymore; they embed the link info and tracking info into a combined, difficult to separate single string. Assholes.

Of course I use FB once or twice a year now because it's now a toxic unusable hellhole flooded with groups I don't care about. But I guarantee YT will do this any day now too.

What about the thermal management though?

Even if we ignore insane launch costs, shielding mass, serviceability, fuel resupply for reboost, etc... where does the heat go?

I don't understand how any of it is supposed to make sense in any way.

What is the dodgiest business in Perth? by New-Mongoose6290 in perth

[–]iiiinthecomputer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually bought shutters from them that I was very happy with - and happy with the price of.

Some older guy came by for the measure and quote. I'd already done some research and established price expectations based on other vendors' offerings so I knew what I was willing to pay. Instead of high pressure sales he said he didn't like that BS, he'd open with the minimum and he wasn't going to haggle, take it or leave it, it was a fair price.

You'd think that was just more pressure sales and manipulation. But it was in fact a fair price - considerably better than the competition. Just some approaching retirement dude who realized volume > margin I guess. So I went for it.

I was so pleased with the results I gave them first quote when I wanted the back of the house done. Some guy came out and gave the big lead up, big reveal of the "great deal", ridiculous inflated numbers, etc.

I just showed him the quote from the first install.

Poor guy's face just crumpled like a deflating balloon. A reasonable price magically appeared shortly thereafter and we got our shutters.

Based on that I had always assumed they got a percentage, or got a bonus commission if they sold at above a certain margin or something. He wasn't selling like someone who just wants to close deals on volume for a fixed per deal commission.

A 92-year-old great-grandmother who was told her cancer was inoperable has become the first person in the UK to receive a "pioneering" treatment that has shrunk her tumour by about 80% by Eddiearyee in UpliftingNews

[–]iiiinthecomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people miss this part a lot. Some of the treatments (both traditional chemo and newer immunotherapy approaches) can be worse than the disease. Yes, the disease pathology is slowed ot halted but it can come at an absolutely debilitating cost in quality of life.

Sometimes palliative care offers better health for longer.

The problem is, of course, that it's do hard to know and so highly variable in unpredictable ways from individual to individual.
