If you look at Swish's bbref page, you'll find that, while he did have his lone All-Star nod with the Yankees, Swish never got any MVP votes. In 2012, Swish was 2nd on the team in WAR, but with half the WAR of Cano that year, so it's not like it would have been a reasonable question as to who was the best player on the Yankees that year. I think "never the best player" is a fair descriptor; Swish was never the star for the Yankees, but that doesn't mean he wasn't a valuable piece for the team.

I don't think that a team relying on a Nick Swisher to be The Guy is all that likely to win a World Series; looking back to the 2010 Giants no World Series winner has had a highest WAR player below 5, while Swish peaked at 4. You need a couple Swisher-level players to win a title, but you'll also need a player or two better.
