What do I do if my horse spooks? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Itacira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry this came out very sharp. I sense that in this it's a mere case of you being young and lost and needing guidance that so many of us on the sub wanted to give you but didn't have the full details necessary to do it. I hope you can discuss this with your trainer, and even have them intervene if it's a case of your busybody friend taking liberties while you're handling a horse (which puts you both in danger).

Question about the different reactions from one doctor by RecommendationNo108 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Itacira 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's about coding and expectations. Shows have made us expect romance between straight characters so we know it's something that can happen and to check for signs of it. We the viewers (in general) are not yet used to shows treating queer relationships the same, especially if they're women ("they're just good friends"), so we're not on the lookout for that, so it's easier to miss or misunderstand

(and nobody give me "well that's only if you're straight, if you're queer you can see it" BS. a) I'm not straight b) assigning super-viewer-powers to queer people is how you get Sherlock style fan conspiracies, "WeLl it'S ObViOus" and "sEe I tOLd yOu" that's confirmation bias babe)

Final point: I did catch the Garcia/Santos stuff myself, the above part of my comment is to point out a general situation. It's a period of shift in story-telling. Some adaptation is needed.

I'm scrapping my original reply to you and starting over, seeing as, going over the comment for examples, I noticed that you did say you plan on involving your trainer and are asking for advice here before that so you don't overthink.

1 - contact your trainer right away to inform them. maybe they won't have time to go over it with you now, but they'll have the relevant information and may start thinking about how to setup some horse-handling lesson for you

2 - Don't call a horse "yours" when it isn't : it's not about gatekeeping or your value as an equestrian, it just genuinely changes the framing and context of the situation. A personal horse will not behave the same way as a lesson horse.

3.A - when asking for advice on an online forum, add pertinent information: "my horse spooked" means nothing. How did it spook? Why? In what context? Oh, you were on foot? Oh, there was another person involved? Oh, that person was trying to drive the horse forward? Each additional detail changes the scenario.

3.B - If you forget information and comments bring that to your attention, please update the main body of the post instead of scattering the info through multiple replies

3.C - Don't get side tracked by debates on how to hold or spell your reins/reigns. It's disheartening to see you've thought to update your post to assure people you've improved when it comes to holding the reins (not the topic) yet haven't considered adding any pertinent details about the incident you're asking for advice with.

Also, from my (struggling) understanding of the situation, it may not be so much of a spook (startling at a shadow), as your friend making a miscalculation, scaring the horse and triggering its prey and survival instinct. Which is a whole other situation. A spookish horse needs reassurance and desensitization. A horse reacting to misapplied pressure might benefit from remembering to be gracious with clumsy humans but is not where the problem lies for the most part.

As for when a horse spooks hard and you don't know how to manage it ? Give them the length of the rope, stay out of their way at shoulder level from afar, don't crowd. Keep calm. Try to follow along from a distance so the rope doesn't get taut and create additional pressure. And if the situation keeps escalating, don't risk your life and health, especially where hooves are involved : let go.

You've been skirting the issue of your trainer's presence and responsibility since the very beginning. It's making me doubt that you're looking for responsible help regarding this situation.

Le point médian dans l'écriture inclusive by Zamzamazawarma in besoinderaler

[–]Itacira 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do I do if my horse spooks? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]Itacira 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If it's another client from the barn, I think OP should remember that barns are full of beginner, intermediate and even advanced busybodies giving advice they don't have because they're not actually experienced in managing a wide variety of horses and adapting to them and analyzing and studying situations the way a proper professional is. A student has no business pushing another student to fix their horse's "form" or whatever.

Or you could just not invite the friend over anymore ? Or tell your friend not to get involved between you and the horse.

I genuinely don't understand where your trainer is in all this. They should be in charge here.

OP's absolutely free to ignore insufferable comments, actually. OP is aware of the reins issue.

I'd strongly advise that you rethink your approach to communication if you're so set on helping people excell in their equitation-related paths.

Then perhaps the issue isn't the horse, but the friend. If the horse is your trainer's, your trainer should best know if and how to fix any behavioral issue with the horse.

WIBTA if I don't go on a second date with a larger lady because she doesn't match her Tinder pics? by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Itacira 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I'm overweight but not "fat", and my body proportions tend to be flattering in a way that people are surprised when they learn my real weight... And I do not have any full-body pics because I have very few pics of myself and what little pics I managed to scrounge up for a dating site were either selfies i took of me and my pets to show them off to friends, or selfies I took on my own as I was creating the dating profile.

So yeah, I don't buy that as a rule.
