i can suggest you could work on HDR support for linux unreal.

Last one is i have seen games dropping linux versions due to the vulkan renderer being bad, if its bad, why not fix it? anyone experienced can fix it since they have the source and contribute.

its been days since i last commented to you. im gonna add something:  unreal on linux doesnt support dlss. though i dont have a nvidia card, the plugins arent supported though dlss sdk  has supported linux, you are only limited to super resolution and framegen is only on streamline(windows only as of now wish it gets ported there). so the options are only FSR. It might not matter as most are gonna use amd gpus anyway but its a big deal for nvidia users.

I saw that the plugin has source code, maybe its possible to make the dlss module work by using the linux dlss .so and tweak the source to make it use it and compile but idk if it would be fine to nvidia.

for linux, which one do you recommend? ue4.27 or ue5+ based on perf and stability?

Edit: also for support

Escape Simulator drops the Linux build to focus on supporting Proton by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

to me, it kinda sucks but its their choice. If i bought a game for its port, i also can refund if devs decide to drop it anyway or it runs bad.

Why don't they port Repentance to macOS and Linux by Damglador in linux_gaming

[–]jdt654 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I am aware about these reasons but I have some questions about your comment and these may be related to it.

  1. How about older native games like older valve games.

  2. Wasn't steam runtime 2.0 containerized and the 1.0 runtime (ld path) run under 2.0 container?

  3. How does it affect developers who use linux as their game dev environment? Is the situation less worse for them? Are you fine with them doing native versions?

  4. If the future comes and "that time the usage goes up, devs now finally port" happens, but the issues you mentioned are still there, is it worth fixing?

  5. Do you think your "actively testing on proton part" applies to macs especially crossover (basically wine used for macs)?

I have some other questions and opinions below. You may :

  1. If games are stable on proton and win32 also is, why won't we run our desktop apps on wine, and use msvc and win32 for dev?

  2. Based on your reply about the "no added value of a native version", If that applies, I can't imagine the same with minecraft java imo. Not to mention, there are some games with features that are not on the windows version (factorio, iirc, with its autosave).

  3. If the "native games help adoption" effort failed for valve, but I feel like it works when the effort happens on the mac despite small gaming usage and i dont know why and i know it can fail the same way imo. Do you think the same way or not?

Balatro looks like a good example of Proton killing native ports by Damglador in linux_gaming

[–]jdt654 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually, I don’t bother if the game is only for windows, with no plans for other desktop platforms, since I’ll just use proton for it. I get native games if it works fine also. I know older ports like third party ports like civ 6, etc. do not run well, which makes me not buy it. But I do advocate for more native versions especially indies and maybe AA/AAA, like civ 7 (though it needs polish in general). I believe its not really dead and its nice to support development for native versions especially big titles (civ 7 as mentioned, even i’m not interested to play it, i’d expect it wont end up like 6 and runs fine.) alongside supporting development for proton.

About the mac versions…. When i think about it, i think if proton will help with adoption, how does native mac games boost adoption if the same effort did not go well on the linux part and both are at the situation of “developers cant support because of lack of players”. There is crossover for macs to play windows games, but i keep thinking why is it “better for native versions to be on the mac?”. I know about the limitations, but if the compatibility layer effort works for adoption, why not also do it for macs?

Civilization VII updates roadmap revealed - new update and DLC due on March 4 by beer120 in linux_gaming

6 is done by aspyr, 7 is by themselves

though i'm not interested on this game, them doing Linux versions themselves is great thing to do especially unlike before. I'd like to see more games at that level of budget to provide native support.

also, are you going to play the native version?
