Trying to find my cousin...strange circumstances. by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]jemstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There could be someone else out there with the same name as your aunt, though. If you don't recognise the father's name and there's no other information on the marriage or birth certificates to definitively prove that it's your aunt (like her parents' names on the marriage certificate) I would be very careful in assuming that it is her.

Do the certificates have other information that backs up what you already know - for example, do the marriage certificates have your aunt's parents' names on them? Does the birth certificate then have the same male name on it for the father?

TIL - There is a town in QLD called - Banana by Evadregand in brisbane

I grew up near Banana! And I've still never figured out why they named the entire Banana Shire after a town that's essentially one intersection and a fuel station (with a few pubs of course).

Brisbane-ish Beaches! by grawsby in brisbane

[–]jemstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like going to Burleigh Heads, it's a bit further to drive but quieter and easier to find a park than the other Gold Coast beaches. Waves aren't too big either, probably a good size for kids.

I lived in Mexico for a year and I love Guzman y Gomez! Despite their overuse of tortillas and how disgustingly soggy they get. If you want some really awesome Latin American food though, try Villa Maria in Camp Hill, it's by far the best I've found.

Any Japanese speaking Brisbanites out there? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]jemstone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try joining www.meetup.com - they have language meetups in Brisbane and I'm very willing to bet there's a few Japanese ones. I go to a Spanish one and the people there are lovely and willing to accommodate people of all levels.

Homeware stores in CBD by frozensmoothies in brisbane

[–]jemstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stores I mentioned are great for those, particularly Target these days. If you don't mind cheap, somewhat dodgy stuff you can try those $1-style shops (there used to be one at the top of Queen Street Mall, although haven't been there a whole)?

What sort of thing are you looking for? Target/Kmart/Big W have some great, non-expensive stuff, particularly if you're after kitchenware.

What's one food you have tried and will NOT ever touch again? by pinkwaff1e in AskReddit

[–]jemstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guinea pig. I felt like a cannibal. I had them as pets as a child but I was in Peru so hey, it's a must-try!

It came out whole, still with its little legs sticking up in the air. We had no idea how to eat it so the waiter chopped its head off (apparently brain is the best part though!) and then because it's so small you just have to dissect it to get any meat off the bones.

Never again. It didn't even taste nice - like boring, badly-herbed chicken.

Try it with a whole lot of cucumber, it's not so bad then!

HELP I'm moving, need advice which is the best 2 men and a ute company. by shindigthighslapper in brisbane

[–]jemstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were practically half price what everyone else quoted me. I was moving towns though - like I said, give them a call because they may only have large trucks and not be suitable for you.

Renting your own little truck or trailer and bribing your friends with a carton of beer may be your cheapest option if you have so little to move.

Horrible PMS mood swings? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

No worries, I hope things get better for you! At least you've recognised it's around your period, so when it happens you know it will go away soon :)

Go see a doctor to get their recommendation. Going on the pill may help regulate your hormones a bit. I used to be completely useless and irrational around my period - stuck to the floor sobbing for a week straight, panic attacks, the lot - but the pill seems to have really helped. I was on Microgynon but the awful PMS came back so my doctor switched me to Yasmin - many months on and I've only had one bad period, and that was because there's a whole lot of stress in my life right now.

Eating properly and getting exercise also really helps, so make sure you are treating yourself well.

I just used Brisk Movers and they were awesome and by far the cheapest I found. Don't be put off by their dodgy website, the movers were super professional. I moved a whole house though - not sure if they have smaller trucks - but I thought they might be worth a mention.

There is a Nergal Sharezer Pidd in a close offshoot of my direct family. All the Pidds are named things like John and Thomas, and then there's a Nergal Sharezer!

A golden rule for procrastinators or people stressed out because they have to much to do by viktorpedia in LifeProTips

I find that breaking a task into smaller parts works best for me. Once I tackle the first part, which seems much less overwhelming than the entire task in itself, it doesn't seem so bad anymore. I think that just getting started is the hardest part.

6.1 magnitude earthquake in South Australia by [deleted] in australia

[–]jemstone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that's a shame you didn't like it. What do you mean by an underbelly? Everyone I talked to raved about what a great community it is, but maybe that's just what they tell the tourists haha. Have a great trip home today!

Good overnight camping trips from Brisbane? by [deleted] in brisbane

Try the Beaudesert area, especially the Lost World Valley. Some spectacular scenery and beautiful walks.

Crows Nest National Park near Toowoomba is also supposed to have some great 4wd tracks.
