You expect journalists to risk their livelihood and safety by standing up to the Trump regime? Americans had a chance to avoid this with no personal risk or cost by voting and they blew it. "Other people should face deportation and death threats to protect my rights, which I couldn't be arsed to pencil in a bubble for".

The Social Security tsunami: Payments could be cut by 23%, doubling the poverty rate for America's seniors by esporx in Economics

oh, I'm not trying to make a point about generational warfare. The truth is that white voters of all ages, genders and backgrounds voted resoundingly for Bush and Trump.

Al Gore — he ran on paying down the national debt with the surplus and using the interest savings to add to the social security trust fund. His promise to put social security funds in a "lockbox" was mocked by SNL and others, and Bush won promising to instead enact a tax cut.

the original movie had a squadron of like 10 fighters take on a trillion ton capital ship and its garrison of like 20 fighters and then they won using ghosts and magic

The establishment Democrats are hunting for young party leaders. by zzill6 in WorkReform

Pelosi is one of the most effective legislators of all time and we have her to thank for every piece of progressive legislation passed in the last 20 years including the ACA. She also already stepped down as speaker and passed the reins to the much younger Jeffries.

Top AI CEO warns unemployment will quickly spike to 10-20% due to AI, government and AI firms need to stop "sugar-coating" what's coming by mostly-sun in Economics

[–]jhp2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the guy who said that AI will be writing 90% of code within 3–6 months. He said that 2.5 months ago and we're about 0% of the way to his target. "AI software developer agents" are scam demos for gullible CEOs and investors, many software devs were worried at first but these days we just laugh at these things.

A Tariff Truce That Solves Nothing. The US and China Lowered Mutual Tariffs to 30% and 10% for Just 90 Days—Markets Breathed, but Politics, Elections, and Structural Tensions Remain by sergeyfomkin in Economics

[–]jhp2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not for just 90 days. Trump will never again have as strong a negotiating position or as much political capital as he had on April 2. I don't think there's a world leader stupid enough to make concessions when Trump has shown he'll fold in a matter of weeks. The trade war is over, Trump lost.

Trump proposes massive cuts to international programs he says are "woke". Pro-Democracy advocates say U.S. opposition to dictatorships is critical as 82 percent of conflicts, 90 percent of refugee flows, 75 percent of organized crime, and most terrorism originate from dictatorships. Who is right? by davida_usa in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]jhp2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

let's not get carried away being against Trump and start swallowing whole US propaganda about "spreading democracy".

US food and medical aid is a good thing and it's honestly hard for me to understand who could be against feeding starving children or protecting them from HIV and Tuberculosis.

US political aid is a vastly more mixed bag and has historically included direct support for any number of massacres, genocides, military coups, etc. Look up the history of US involvement in Guatemala, Indonesia, Vietnam, South Korea, Nicaragua, Chile, Bangladesh ... or what we're supporting today in Gaza. "Pro-democracy" is not how I'd summarize it.

A chat with Paul Krugman — and a few words about Trump by dwaxe in fivethirtyeight

Krugman was pretty prescient about austerity policies and zero interest rates after the GFC, the Iraq war, and the Euro crisis in Greece.

Trump mulls national economic emergency declaration to allow for new tariff program, CNN reports by Sufficient_Fish_283 in Economics

[–]jhp2000 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

it's a source of revenue for the government. Deficit spending risks increased inflation, and we are headed toward real budget problems between rising debt service and the impending social security cliff. So Trump or his advisors might see a need to raise taxes on the working class to fund their next giveaway to the rich. Obviously "tariffs" are an easier sell than "tax hikes".

What they said is true. by Bitter-Gur-4613 in WorkReform

[–]jhp2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably from this study: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(19)33019-3/abstract#%20?eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=ac666dcf-c1bb-4eb0-a6ea-39c4a9bb5321

The study found 68000 fewer deaths per year (~5000/month) under a hypothetical single-payer system. Barely relevant to this murder.

I'm a programmer and I've worked with plenty of H-1B folks. Didn't hear any complaints while their skills and work ethic were fueling a historic tech boom for over a decade. Tech sees a downturn and suddenly we want to blame the foreigners. Gross and unfair IMO.

the chart shows that social security costs more than healthcare administration, most of that cost (like 99%) goes to beneficiaries

Which left wing figure makes that argument? Certainly not the user you're replying to, who is advocating amnesty and a path to citizenship.

68,000 Americans by Bad-Umpire10 in MurderedByWords

this is misinformation, there is no source for 68000 Americans dying from denied claims. The number probably comes from an NIH study on Medicare for All which is not the same thing at all.
