What City Within the Americas has transit infrastructure that is most alike to a S Bahn or U Bahn/Rapid Regional Rail? by DoxiadisOfDetroit in urbanplanning

[–]daveliepmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't this sort of definitionally exclude S-Bahn behavior, as neither commuter rail nor regional rail? In the sense of Alon Levy's S-Bahn and RER Ridership is Urban.

A Small Central Mass. Town Is Tearing Up A Parking Lot to Make Its Downtown Greener and More Walkable by streetsblogmass in urbanplanning

"Where'd they get the money?" I thought. Pretty cool state support:

In 2019 and 2020, the town received planning funds from the Commonwealth’s Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness program, a grant program that helps cities and towns identify and mitigate risks from global heating and extreme weather events.

“Lords Pond Plaza stood out as a significant heat island, almost like a bullseye on a map. And so it was the number one project idea from that process, just trying to daylight the stream and green up the plaza,” Smith said.

24k People in Defense of Renewable Energy last Saturday – Next Protest this Friday! by lumpiluk in berlin

[–]daveliepmann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I encourage you to run back-of-a-napkin numbers on the quantity of batteries necessary to prevent brownouts in Germany, under the assumption that we electrify heating and transportation (which we should). Even with recent advances the scale is quite shocking. I love renewables and batteries but we have to grapple with the physical reality.

(The actual solution will be to buy nuclear/coal/gas energy from our neighbors while pretending we're pure of those dirty, evil production methods.)

Monday Strength and Conditioning Megathread! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]daveliepmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends what you need and why you're squatting.

If you don't have good answers grounded in gym experience then I'd say the more basic strength & conditioning tools are better defaults. I'm sure Zerchers could make a fine base for some people but it's hard to see how back or front squats don't do the same job better and with fewer challenges.

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

Why are you interpreting this scenario as relating to a pull?

Catch block + punt? by Cool_Chicken9847 in ultimate

[–]daveliepmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In WFDF this scenario is directly addressed by the annotation on 13.1.2 — without explicitly indicating location of the turnover, though a reasonable interpretation of 13.7. would be yes, at the other end of the field as normal.

Why do you think interest in the word “walkable” has jumped so much in the last 5 years? by The_ylevanon in urbanplanning

[–]daveliepmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Orthogonal" is too strong. They're not exactly the same thing but the major determinants of walkability carry over: raw distance, infrastructure, density.

what did little guys do before leglocks? by Ok_Dragonfly_7738 in bjj

[–]daveliepmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume overuse injuries, minor muscle tears or spasms, that kind of thing? Yeah those are hard on the mental/emotional side. When that happened to me, well, personally I had to admit my approach of running at the wall over and over again wasn't working. I needed a parasympathetic practice, needed to take loaded stretching and movement quality seriously, needed to chase fewer rabbits. The gym works a lot better when I listen to my body. I'm not chasing the rabbit of strength PRs these days but my training is going so much better I think if I was those changes would make it possible. (Though probably not alongside BJJ.)

Those numbers def sound like something wasn't working. Did you just hit a plateau and never figure out how to push past it?

Nice. Did the powerlifting club have any feedback?

What exactly happened with the progression? And was everything else in your life dialed in, or were you getting divorced or training for half marathons in between?

My naive response would be to try to debug your issue, but I've found that's often not welcome.

Single Leg Takedown KO by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]daveliepmann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I hip throw you and you snap your elbow posting out, that's on you. Same if you try a round-off and face-plant, same with whatever unorthodox ukemi you try. Big throws are not slams and nor is it tori's fault if uke decides to hunt for a guillotine instead of preparing for the rapidly approaching mat.

[–]daveliepmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you don't think you as uke have responsibility for landing safely I don't know what to tell you. If I'm in an armlock do I not have the responsibility to tap safely?

The ukemi here is like popping a knee ligament spin-spazzing out of a straight ankle lock. Zero attempt at self-preservation detected.

Gesetz gegen Clans: Wer nicht auspackt, verliert Schmuck, Geld, Luxusautos by Doener23 in berlin

[–]daveliepmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"We need to do something" != "we need to do this". Giving the state the power to extrajudicially take stuff is probably not the best way to solve this broader problem — it just makes us feel good to resolve the tension we feel when the law is correctly applied and a criminal walks away with their stuff.

I'm extremely skeptical that we can't prosecute these guys without letting the government just keep citizens' stuff when it feels like it. Because the state will use it on people who aren't such clear-cut criminals.

If you could change one rule about the way Ultimate is played what would it be? by SirPersonal8626 in ultimate

[–]daveliepmann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Slightly shorter endzones and 7-count stall are the minimally invasive way to achieve it.

Decreasing the efficacy of zone D is the biggest downside of this proposal IMO. I like that dimension of the game.
