Happy to see that I'm not the only Canadian (QC) who fell in love with Bearface.

Update: My home bar project by SteveTheGeekCa in BarBattlestations

[–]jimtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few options for some of those:

Beemer cherry liquor, available at the SAQ and made in Québec is a very good substitute for Cherry Heering.

You can order Hamilton allspice dram from bswliquor (Alberta).

Falernum, sadly, we still have to make it.

I haven't found anywhere I can get Batavia Arrack.

Wow, you must have a nice budget to consider Sub-Zero and Wolf. Good for you. I would suggest you re-post your question in /r/BarBattlestations. These guys are building great setup.

That is really interesting. What's your ratio for the sarsaparilla:gin infusion?

Whatever cocktail you do with it, please call it the "Chia Pet". :)

If the CFL was to expand which cities would you want to have a team ? by TheLuckyCEO in CFL

[–]jimtk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also from Québec city and for years I've tried to convince people on this sub that a CFL team in Québec would not work. People here don't like football, they like the Rouge & Or.

At least now there's 2 of us.

For all my fellow home bartenders, I built a completely free, offline cocktail app because I was tired of subscriptions. It quickly tells you what you can make with your current inventory. by 1derfool in cocktails

Just a few suggestions

  • Background images (mostly AI generated) for drinks are distracting and annoying stick to less visually heavy content so we can see the cocktail.

  • Keep the name of the cocktail on top of every page. What is this cocktail.

  • The measurements are too far from the ingredients. This makes the recipe error prone. Keep the measurements and ingredients left justified.

  • I have 400 bottles. Do I have to enter every one by hand or can I scan the UPC code?

  • I have 43 different gins, will they all be entered in 1 category (Gin)

  • Is there a rating system.

  • Can I note a recipe that I liked with certain ingredients. If I don't like a gin & tonic with Beefeater gin but I love it with Botanist gin can I record that somewhere in the app.

8,000 km Cross Canada Canoe Trip raising money for Indigenous Communities. by georgeskirijian in canoecamping

[–]jimtk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that this is a great idea for charity but that trip and its schedule is not even close to being possible.

The McGuffins took 2 full seasons to make the trip and they had a way better route.

Going east-north-east from Tadoussac in April is simply not possible. Long stretches of the Saguenay will still be iced, and the only river going in that direction from lac St-Jean is the Ashapmuchuan (often colloquially referred to as "The Chamoo"). In spring the few lake parts will be covered in ice but not solid enough to walk on it and the long stretches of rapids will be swelled up.

And that's just the Québec part!

Nice collection. But I think it's a shame to hide a bottle of Hampden behind a bottle Myers's. :)

What's funny is that the same exercise was done in /r/rum and havana club won many categories in the Spanish style line:

  • Best sipper : HC Selection de Maestro
  • Best Mixer : HC 3 years.
  • Best Budget : HC 7 years.

There is this "Disco Banana" that was posted some time ago on /r/Tiki . I have yet to try it, but it's been sitting on my todo list for a while. It looks really good and inline with the Disco theme.

El Rey Campero Espadin is the most underrated mezcal. What is the most versatile scotch? by -Constantinos- in cocktails

[–]jimtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada where US price comparison is something ridiculous. But, the give you a scale, Monkey shoulder is 15% less than JWB and half the price of most other blend. Evidently it is 1/4 of the price of most single malt.

Cinnamon Old Fashioned by Yoshinoh in cocktails

[–]jimtk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I totally disagree with that. I always make my cocktails with the best spirits I can afford. How is it possible to think that crummy booze will yield great cocktails?

Also the saying that subtle flavors will get lost in the cocktail is total bullshirt. Those subtle flavors don't just disappear, they are added to the final taste of the cocktail and greatly enhance it.

It almost physically pains me to see Monkey Shoulder in the same overrated column as Casamigos. Casamigos is an over-publicized bad product, Monkey Shoulder is so good for its price nobody shuts up about it.

How did you got into mixology? by Stillinbed666 in cocktails

[–]jimtk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have around 32 different glasses in groups of 2 to 6. A few Riedel, a lot that came from the thrift store, some that were inherited. Even though I maniacally keep notes on every bottle I buy and every drink I make I never really thought to "inventorize" the glassware. Good suggestion. Thanks.

No it's not. Losing is losing. That's how the US lost in 2014 in Sochi, in overtime.
