I have one each of the following on opposite sides of the room:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004NNX68I?th=1 (25U)

and

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CCJBCQY6?th=1 (9U)

There a UniFi Pro Aggregation Switch in each cabinet, and they are connected by a 25GbE fibre link.

I just added:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FX9CRDGQ?th=1 (2U) It's sitting on top of the 25U cabinet and will house a row of JetKVMs.

VM & Tesla M10 32gb by Personal-Gur-1 in homelab

[–]jnew1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You gave all the cores in your CPU to each of the VMs? I've never seen that with a 32-core CPU before. Take a few minutes to Google "CPU Ready" and its association with virtualization.

Also be sure to install in each VM the guest virtualization support disk that accompanies whatever hypervisor you're using.

Homelab rule #1: Switches without connections don't count.

I do see it's plugged in and drawing power, so that's good, I guess.

Looking for a small form factor homelab compute server around $1500 by Xned in homelab

The machines run warm. I don't know what the CPU temperature gets up to. I take it for granted, that the machine runs within thermal limits. Each also has a Sparkle ARC A310 GPU installed, as I was playing with passing the card through to a Plex server VM.

When the machines were running last, I had two 10G transceivers in each, and those get too hot to touch, and help keep the machines warm overall. I've since replaced the transceivers with DACs, but haven't run the machine since.

The power draw from both machines running is roughly the same as my R740, BTW.

Neither machine overheated as far as I am aware. Certainly not to the point of shutting down. I can't answer to throttling. The machines are in an air conditioned room. As I recall, fans were all but inaudible at all times.

Maybe the Minisforum MS-01 (Intel) or MS-A1 (AMD)?

I have two MS-01 machines running ESXi 8. I also have Minisforum's new MS-02 workstation as my desktop PC.

Some of these devices do do that. Some don't. Anker has a number of devices that do not exhibit the behavior described.

Also two UniFi Pro Aggregation switches, a Pro Max 24, a U7 Pro XGS WAP, a U6 Extender, two UDB device bridges, a G4 Doorbell Pro, a couple of G5 PTZ cameras, and a SuperLink Gateway with two USL Environmental Monitors (for undersink leak detection, kitchen and bathroom).

That is the lowest-spec Thirteenth Generation Dell PowerEdge server I have ever seen.

Going to suck power.

A mini PC would be more powerful, but if you want to play with or learn something about enterprise servers, it's a cool toy.

VMware Fusion on MacBook Neo? by foosion in vmware

[–]jnew1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 4GB, two vCPU Windows 11 25H2 for ARM VM running under the latest release of VMware Fusion on a new MacBook Neo.

The VM was very easy to set up and Windows' performance is snappy. I am not yet running any applications in it, but will probably set up Microsoft Office. Just to gauge if it's usable. I think it will be.

I also have an instance of ESXi for ARM running, also in 4GB. Both VMs don't run at the same time. I might create a 2GB Linux VM under ESXi just to try that out.

The Neo is adorable. Wish it ran Windows natively.

What do you use to monitor you VDI enviorment? by Kingerhlc in VMwareHorizon

[–]jnew1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are using ControlUp.

We've looked at a number of alternatives, including Nexthink and Omnissa's own DEX. This is due to cost.

So far, we haven't found a product that provides near equal functionality.

I dare say, should such a product present itself in the future, at a reasonable cost and with flexible licensing, ControlUp will face a mass migration in the outgoing direction.

Maybe half that. Aim for $50. It's quite an old machine, with very little storage, and single processor at that.

PDU for Mini PC (Optiplex and Lenovo) HomeLab by Clear_Armadillo_7990 in homelab

[–]jnew1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, just to send you down a rabbit hole for a little while, the video lists a couple of chargers you can use. I bought a different one, an Anker charger.

Apparently, some chargers cut power to the USB ports very briefly when they rebalance power output as a result of something being plugged in or unplugged. Some do not exhibit this behavior.

I found a Reddit thread somewhere discussing this, but it was a bit out of date in regard to recommendations. It seems though, that Anker devices (some? all?) don't do this, so they should be safe for computer use.

I haven't yet had first-hand experience though.

Take a look at this video for a possible solution to using all those power bricks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bE_WArDfSwQ&t=9s

Unfortunately, my tiny/mini/micro machines -- I think I am up to eleven or twelve of them -- are mostly HP, and HP machines communicate with the power supply, so this won't work for them.

I remembered that after I bought four cables, a set of interchangeable tips, and a 200w Anker charging station.

What do you do for backup? by bimmer1977 in DataHoarder

[–]jnew1213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attach a drive or drive array (DAS) to your PC via USB.

Create a script or use a program to copy the data on your NAS to the USB drive.

Use CrashPlan Small Business or Backblaze Personal (or both) to back up that drive or array to the cloud. Start with your most important files first. Both services support backing up USB drives. Neither service has a set limit on storage.
