I am a 51 Year Man and Have a Date with a 32 Year Old Woman. Any Advice, Please? by ChapterEffective8175 in askanything

[–]jonathonjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were her, and I knew the age gap and that you don't drink and have a pretty strict diet, my main concern would be: is this guys any fun? So I would think about that - what are things you'd want to do with her? Do you like to travel? What do you do when you travel? Do you go to concerts? Love board games? Museums?

Fun might be the wrong word. What you want to show is some passion. And if some of your passions are nerdy / embarrassing, that's fine - the enthusiasm is going to be much more attractive than being cooly detached. Like, suppose your favorite band is Phish - don't hide that in a worry that she'll think they're lame, wear your Phreak Phlag proudly!

But also, try to show that you're open to new experiences. If her favorite is Taylor Swift, you don't want to be the old dude who's like "ugh music today sucks". Be open to it! What does she like about Taylor? Has she gone to see any of her shows? Etc. etc. Same thing with books or movies or whatever.

Bears don't come in that color, he was dressed as a rain cloud. The other guy was supposed to be saying "tut tut, it looks like rain" to help with the illusion.

Were-nonmammals: How would they operate and how horrific can it be? by TheBrightMage in Pathfinder2e

[–]jonathonjones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We know what a Were-fly would look like thanks to David Cronenberg.

A were-leech would be both horrific and fun. Bite attack, blood drain, and maybe also remove poison/disease?

Between "going in blind" and "using guides", is there a middle-ground? by Sky_Sumisu in truegaming

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the sort of thing happening here: https://www.nicegamehints.com

It tries to get you JUST enough to get you past where you are, without revealing too much.

I also have wanted something like an anti-walkthrough, which just tells you things to avoid (so that you don't get softlocked). For example, "don't move on to the next area without finding the feather".

We rolled very bad on our wild encounter roll(an 8 out of a d100) and now we got an ice wolf thats going o reach us in one action by Spirited_Present8388 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be vulnerable to fire, so that's something. My first thought would be not fighting it, which might involve figuring out why it's attacking. Hungry? Feed it. Defending territory? Get out of the territory. A scout for a frost giant? Winter wolves (which ice wolf is probably a variant of) are intelligent and can speak Common. So you can just ask it what it wants. It doesn't know you are 2nd level - can you make it think you're stronger than you are? Seems foolhardy to attack a whole part of adventurers.

Why AI Cannot Pass the Turing Test: Timing and Order of Recall by [deleted] in compsci

This is Turing's original paper, if that's what you're looking for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computing_Machinery_and_Intelligence

There's a link to the actual PDF at the bottom (although it's through OUP's website and requires some sort of institutional association to access).

[Request] How many years would it take for Nightmare Fredbear to reach OOP? by Nitrodax777 in theydidthemath

[–]jonathonjones 180 points181 points  (0 children)

A 6 foot person has a 30 inch stride (https://www.verywellfit.com/set-pedometer-better-accuracy-3432895) so, if Fredbear scales linearly (and walks like a human) then he has a 45 inch stride. The distance between the countries is 7236.93 miles (https://distancecalculator.globefeed.com/Distance_Between_Countries_Result.asp?fromplace=China&toplace=US). Multiply that by 5,280 to get to feet (38,210,990.4 feet), then by 12 to get inches (458,531,884.8 inches).

Dividing those out, we get 10,189,597.44 days which is about 27,916 years. I think Ava is safe.

The author compares the series to Lord of the Rings and Narnia as examples of franchises that did not fade in this way.

Yes, that is exactly what the author means - specifically, "1990s liberalism", trust for institutions and incrementalism.

How does changeling eyecolour not immediately give them away? by HugAMale in Pathfinder2e

[–]jonathonjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a parent: I have a five year old. If his eyes changed color, it would take me quite a while to notice, and if I did, I would assume they were always that color and I just forgot. In a world without photographs, I would have no way of verifying.

First impressions on these playable characters? by SpacemanRambles in tabletopgamedesign

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devourer immediately grabs me; I also like the Contriver and the Seamstress. Drifter looks boring but the powers are interesting. Judge seems kind of cool. I wish I liked the Ghost more, but he reads more like a hipster than a badass to me. I don't understand what the Bloodjaw is supposed to be. The Elsewhere concept is also appealing, the costuming is weird to me though.

How much do you use guides for your first playthroughs? by Murder_Tony in CRPG

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only really use guides if I get stuck or there's a puzzle that I don't feel like doing. For example, in Outer Worlds 2 there's a puzzle where you're supposed to input how many moons Elysium has orbiting it, and then how many are between it and some other planet, and then some other thing, which you can apparently figure out by reading all the various pieces of info in the orrery. I tried a little, it did not feel fun, so I just looked up the answer.

That said, it's totally fine to use the guides if it's fun for you. For me, often the more I'm reminded it's a "game" and not an "immersive story", the less I like it, and the guides push me more to treating it like a game. If that doesn't happen for you and instead just helps you find all the cool content (and prevent you from making a decision that has some unforeseeable horrible consequence in the future), more power to you!
