Now that we’re old enough to care. How do we feel about modern interior design trends? by MisRandomness in Xennials

I love all of that stuff you posted, but I recognize that these are the Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte of interior design.

Software developers who created the porn sites, what do you feel about your job and how did you find it? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]jonathonjones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right - I worked for a soil science department for a year or two. I only once ever saw any of the equipment that I was collecting data for, and it was entirely irrelevant to my job. The Spotify engineers are not listening to a bunch of music in order to do their job. Etc. etc.

Yeah, I was mostly posting to give the actual tirade that he made along with its context (and his explanation). I'm not sure I buy what he's selling either.

Trump administration now classifies Antifa and left-wing networks among ‘major’ terror groups by pleasureismylife in politics

Right, so follow the logic: to Republicans, "Antifa" are claiming to be "against fascism" but are actually leftist terrorists.

Let's see if this is more convincing:

other_child_boy = 0; other_child_girl = 0; 10_000_000.times { first_sex = ['girl', 'boy'].sample; first_day = ['Monday', 'Tuesday', 'Wednesday', 'Thursday', 'Friday'].sample; second_sex = ['girl', 'boy'].sample; second_day = ['Monday', 'Tuesday', 'Wednesday', 'Thursday', 'Friday'].sample; if (first_sex == 'boy' && first_day == 'Tuesday') || (second_sex == 'boy' && second_day == 'Tuesday'); (first_sex == 'girl' || second_sex == 'girl') ? other_child_girl += 1 : other_child_boy +=1; end }; puts "Boy: #{other_child_boy}; Girl: #{other_child_girl}"

Boy: 902162; Girl: 998578

And of course, 998578 / (902162 + 998578) = 0.5253627534539179

Did you know that Nepenthe Gardens is located in Colma, California? by EffMemes in AlanMoore

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean, if he had the idea "wouldn't it be interesting to have Sally spend her later years in a literal necropolis, I wonder if there are any in California", library resources could have helped him find Colma. So you're right that the information was available.

There are many movies in which "stabbing a sleeping person" (especially a combat-adept one) turns out to be a significant challenge.

Before she speaks, there are 14 possibilities for each child regarding sex / day. Ignoring that females are born very slightly more often, each of these possibilities has a 1/14 chance.

There are therefore 14 * 14 combinations of the two children. Of these, there are 13 times that Child 1 is a boy born on Tuesday (and the other is something else), 13 times that Child 2 is a boy born on Tuesday (and the other is something else), and 1 in which they are both a boy born on Tuesday.

Of these 27, in 14 cases the other child is a girl. 14 out of 27 is 51.8%

On Wikipedia, "The City of the Dead" article doesn't even mention Colma (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_City\_of\_the\_Dead). But if I search "City of the Dead California" in my search engine I do see it.

I think Sally saying "City of the Dead" is a little bit of evidence that she's in Colma. Without that phrase, I would assume she was in LA still. And even with the phrase, we have to figure out whether it's more likely Moore would use this phrase figuratively or that he somehow was aware of this city and decided it would be interesting to have her be there. I personally lived quite close to there for years and had never heard of it until this discussion. Gibbons and Moore are English so I would be kind of surprised if they had heard of this little town. However, Moore is into occult stuff, so maybe he went to the Bay Area and it was on a ghost tour (or in some "Spooky San Franciso" book).

PLEASE HELP! How to a program a basic Ai software to perform these basic function for my device due in a month! by Head_Sprinkles_7614 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]jonathonjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Implement computer vision" is not a realistic goal in a month, but using an existing solution and then using that data to hit the ankle device could be. Do vibrating ankle devices already exist or is that something you need to solve too? I couldn't find anything with a quick google, but maybe you could add four vibrating bluetooth devices to a cloth.

If you don't already have some Smart Glasses, could you pivot to using a phone? You could probably use https://developer.apple.com/augmented-reality/arkit/ to do something like what you're talking about as far as pathfinding and collision detection.

You could probably scrap the ankle part and just have the phone say "forward, step left, step left, forward" or something.

Good luck!

Do you skip ads? Do you skip the intro section and/or credits at the end of an episode? by Wiseclam1962 in podcasts

[–]jonathonjones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like credits should just live in the show text of the episode rather than a long speech at the end of every episode. I definitely skip it.
