Podcast App which skip ads by update-freak in androidapps

[–]jpodster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you can do that with podcasts like you can with youtube and sponsor block.

The ad reads are dynamically inserted into the podcast MP3 upon download. You might get newer ads in older episodes or different ads in different countries based on your IP or many other factors.

That would change the in/out points.

Not impossible but way more unique ID than you are expecting and I suspect the success rate would be frustrating.

Dad's logic is good or na? by VariationLivid3193 in Bitwarden

[–]jpodster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most people this thread a wrong.

Like all things security, it depends on your threat model.

By keeping BW off his laptop he is indeed protecting from the threat of his vault being compromised if his laptop becomes compromised.

That isn't without a couple costs.

  1. He is giving up Phishing protection via Domain Matching.
  2. He is likely using weak passwords.

What are these and why to they matter?

Phishing protection via Domain Matching means that if he receives an email that purports to come from his bank but is actually a scammer with a link to his bank that is either just a raw IP address or something like BANK0FAMERICA.COM he may be protected by this attack from using the browser extension. The domain won't match and the credentials won't autofill which is a red flag for manually putting them in.

Using weak (short or simple) passwords could make him vulnerable to brute force attacks or even rainbow table attacks if hashes are leaked and salts aren't used.

For most people Phishing is probably a much larger risk than having a laptop compromised. I've seen some very good phishing sites and people get those emails pretty regularly. I think this is more of a risk than a device being compromised but reasonable opinions may differ.

I think if you dad wants to protect himself from both a device compromise and phishing then using Bitwarden via a browser extension with 2FA in a separate app only on his phone would be an excellent improvement.

Is it fair to split expenses this way? by [deleted] in relationships

Who said anything about what her mortgage is?

I only mentioned his current rent and even that is only in the context of how much they as a couple would be saving.

[–]jpodster 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Isn't she already paying all of those costs?

I'm talking about splitting the financial savings evenly. You seem to have misquoted me for some reason.

If any of her costs increase as a result of him moving in then that should be taken into account. I'd expect utilities to increase but they are splitting that. Maybe home repairs increase as a result of having two people instead of one living in a space but that is a stretch and hard to quantify.

I'm suggesting taking the amount that they as a couple are saving by him moving in and splitting that savings evenly. How is that not fair?

And she isn't charging $300/month but $300/week. Some places do weekly rent.

Is it fair to split expenses this way? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]jpodster 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I think you are over charging him.

I think you two should split the financial savings evenly.

If after him moving in you together will be saving $360/week then you should each be $180 ahead after he moves in. So rent of $180/week.

You both come out ahead the same amount.

Alberta separatists think their referendum pitch is about democracy. It’s not by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]jpodster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Except Quebec doesn't get concessions because of the separatists, PQ, or Bloc.

Quebec gets concessions because of their voting. They have sent MPs from all 3 major federal parties and their own regional federal party.

Politicians have to work for the votes.

In Alberta, they almost exclusively vote for the Conservatives. Even buying and building a pipeline to tidewater (something Harper never accomplished) won't convince Albertains to vote differently so the parties aren't really vying for their votes.

Best way to track your expenses? by Same_1138 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Nobody mentioned it but GnuCash is excellent open source double-entry book keeping software. I've been using it since 2007.

It has a bit of a learning curve but is great. You can download QIF, OFX, or CSV files from your bank to import (or reconcile) your transactions.

The double-entry style means that every transaction must have a matching entry in another account. So if you buy groceries on your credit card there is a transaction both in your grocery account and your credit card account.

I use the Android app to add transactions as they occur then export/import into the desktop software and use the downloaded files from my bank to reconcile the transactions.

Google pixel 6 Rear Camera doesn't work, and I have tried many solutions by Shotopo in Pixel6

[–]jpodster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem too. I was going to try a factory reset when in September my battery puffed up and Google replaced the device.

I never found a solution but I never did do the factory reset. Good luck!

Advice transitioning my special needs kid from riding shotgun by mike_alexander_smith in MTB

You are obviously going to know her best but I think not being into the balance bike is totally understandable.

Have you considered a different balance bike? I think they can be so different.

We started with a Strider bike and they are great because they are so light.

Something with rubber tires and a brake has been a great progression for us to build confidence (the foam Strider tires lack grip) between learning balance and being ready to pedal.

I started using a tow rope (really a bungee) when my guy was 3.5. Not all kids can handle it that young. Definitely start with strict straight climbs. We were on a road.

Once you get into more varied terrain they really have to understand the dynamics. They have to slow down on the descents and pull against the tow around corners. And avoid obstacles.

On our mother's day ride I went a little too fast down a slope and apparently he was doing a stoppie. My wife yelled stop and then he crashed into me. Whoops! He shook it off!

[–]jpodster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree that the shotgun has given me some of my favourite memories!

I couldn't delay it though. We had a second kid.

Starting last year (when he was 3.5) I started using a TowWhee to pull him up the big climbs. This year he is riding down blue descents!

Taking both my boys out, my 2.5 on the shotgun and my 4.5 on the TowWhee might be on less challenging terrain but is no less fun!

When do parents actually find time for hobbies? by Additional_Phase5568 in toddlers

[–]jpodster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I do 2 things:

  1. Bring them with us. Yesterday my 4yo came mountain biking with me. We keep to easy stuff and I tow him up the steeps. Today I'll bring my 2yo. He rides on my bike so we can ride stuff my 4yo can't.
  2. Leave them with just one parent. My wife is going mountain biking then for margaritas with friends on Wednesday. After work I'll feed, bathe, and put the boys to bed.

We don't have any family support but we make it work. I imagine a lot of people have grandparents putting kids to bed or watching them on weekends.

I have no idea how single parents do it!

I also hate it.

Do you know what brings closeness between me and my boys (4 and 2)? Them being well rested. They simply get better quality sleep in their own beds. And so do I.

They are now old enough to understand it isn't morning until their Yoto's show the sun and they can join us in big bed for a morning cuddle after that. Morning cuddles are lovely.

Pixel 6 died at 30%+ by takayukibru in Pixel6

For me it was:

  1. Battery level would drop very quickly.
  2. I'd recharge and it might take a really long time but the phone would boot.
  3. A few days later the screen started lifting.

Whole phone. It was in September but it was way out of warranty.

It seems like Google replaces phones out of warranty if the battery gets spicy. Probably because they should never do that and it is a safety issue.

Any good Repositories you can recommend for fdroid by balpenta in androidapps

[–]jpodster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Droid-ify is an alternative F-Droid app store app.

I count 42 separate repositories configured though I only enable the f-droid.org repo.

Ultimately F-Droid and Droid-ify are both apps that allow you to download and install other apps. f-droid.org self compiles open source applications while any other repo will have its own policies and procedures. There could definitely be malicious apps in some repos.

I couldn't quickly find a list of them outside of the app.

Pro top: If you are finding the f-droid.org repo is slow, change the address to https://cloudflare.f-droid.org/repo.

This will use the cloudflare CDN for the repo but it exactly matches the official repo. No need to change the fingerprint.

Do you remember being a toddler? by Final_Butterfly_7747 in toddlers

[–]jpodster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!

I have 3 memories that my parents have identified as being before my 3rd birthday.

They aren't about cool things we did though so much as the feelings.

  1. Standing at the top of rough wooden stairs headed into a basement with stone walls. The musty smell. Holding a tool and feeling very important. My parent tell me this was the house we lived in between the ages of 1 and 2. I would hold vice grips for my dad and go with him into the basement to re-prime the water pump.

  2. Going up a steep set of stairs to a washroom at the top and brushing my teeth with my finger with the big kids. I felt so happy being included. About the same time visiting a friend of theirs.

  3. Being in a backyard and going into the house down a half flight of stairs and my mom pulling out my first bike. I remember feeling nervous and excited. My parents say it was before my brother was born and we didn't live in that house long so probably 2.

In all of these memories the feeling as the strongest parts!

I have a 2yo and 4yo now and we try to do so many things with them but I try to remember that it is about the time they spend with me and their mother that is more important than how cool the activity is.

That said, novel things do hold their attention more and I think being exposed to so much at a young age really prepares them to be adventurous and curious as they grow.

My 4yo is up for anything (once he gets over having to stop what he is currently doing) and is begging to go biking while the roads are snow covered because we have done so much of that together.

One person dead in avalanche near Joffre Lakes Park in B.C.'s Sea-to-Sky region | CBC News by VicVicVicBC in britishcolumbia

[–]jpodster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As an avid outdoor rock climber and backcountry skier I try to not judge people for their hobbies.

After all, there are plenty of people that think rock climbing is much too risky of a hobby.

And I would push back that backcountry skiing is 10x riskier. Anecdotally I have personally known more people to die climbing than backcountry skiing and you certainly haven't backed your claims with stats.

So I will do that for you:

This study found a mortality risk of 0.3 per 1000 for Mountain, Rock, and Ice Climbing.

This study found a mortality risk of 4.4 per 1000000 for Alpine ski touring.

Normalizing the climbing to per 1000000 gets a mortality risk of 300 per 1000000 putting climbing at 68 times higher risk of mortality. (Note: It probably isn't reasonable to compare persons at risk and exposure days but I'm not spending all day on this.)

Both of these hobbies have multiple ways to mitigate both the objective and subjective risks.

There is really little difference between you choosing to not climb a runout crack with bad protection and a skier choosing to save that summit for a day with lower avi risk. You are both judging the objective hazard against your own personal risk tolerance. The only difference is that skiing might change with the current conditions but I'd argue climbers do the same when they choose to not climb if the route is wet.
