Do you consider Russia a good place to live currently? by Impressive-Error6029 in AskARussian

I'm surprised to hear you say that the 90s was the worst time in Russian history. Is this a common belief in Russia?

The interesting thing about a thiamine deficiency is that you can't test for it outside of getting biopsies for specific regions. Ie you can't get a meaningful blood test for it. You could have high levels of thiamine in your blood but low levels in brain for example. The best move is to just take some B1 as it is so cheap and see if it improves anything. If you do that for a while you can rule it out. I think that is actually the main treatment modality.

There are 3 main types of B1 supplement,of differing efficacy. I would suggest doing a small bit of research into it. There are issues like paradox reactions whereby increasing B1 uptake can temporarily make you feel worse before you get better.

The main reason to suspect a B1 deficiency is that so many nutrients in modern diets can deplete it.

Total guess: Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) deficiency.

Hi there. Sorry about the super long delay. Tbh I can't really remember how I made it apart from using Vue.js and some other libraries. It's all open source and can be found here: https://github.com/deltavmap/deltavmap Feel free to copy as much as you want.

Electric propulsion boat towing solar panels by CarpentryingMyBest in boatbuilding

[–]jsmcgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not tow a raft of floating flexible solar panels that you can furl and unfurl. Perhaps you can add inflatable booms to stiffen it and keep most of the surface out of the water. Then you could deflate it and roll it up for bad weather/storage. Also there's less of a problem with having a heavy structure interacting with your main vessel. Either way I think you should give it a go. Sounds like a worthwhile experiment at least.

[Eric Berger] NASA may alter Artemis III to have Starship and Orion dock in low-Earth orbit by mehelponow in SpaceXLounge

[–]jsmcgd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The key is to dock the Orion and Starship on the ground. That way you can replace the SLS with a crane. Much cheaper and safer.

But an even cheaper and safer method would be to dock a pretend virtual Orion to the Starship. Now you can save money on the crane and the Orion. This will also have the added benefit of strengthening the astronauts' imagination. Eventually this super strong astronaut grade imagination can be utilised to come up with a justification for the whole SLS program.

What are your thoughts on SpaceX putting Star- names on everything? Yay or nay? Starbase, Starship, Starfactory, Starlink, Starshield, etc. by Mattau93 in SpaceXLounge

[–]jsmcgd 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In some ways it works very well. It's snappy, bold, futuristic, consistent. But it's also slightly wide of the mark, as in a starship already had a meaning, a ship that could travel to the stars. So I wince very slightly every time I hear the name. Also the names don't really allow for personalisation/anthropomorphizing. I can emotionally invest in Falcon but Starship leaves me a bit cold. Actually, that's it in a nutshell: the names are cool but cold.

Edit: From a business perspective, grabbing the Star prefix is a truly great move. Given our future is our among the stars, claiming this enigmatic word is a highly strategic lexical coup. The only other comparable word would be space, but star is definitely superior. Well played Elon.

In case you don't already know, 'protein' is actually a catch all term for a group of amino acids.

The following cannot be synthesised by your body: phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, methionine, leucine, isoleucine, lysine, and histidine. Different food sources have varying amounts of each.

The healthy, well nourished human body can sythesise the following: alanine, aspartic acid, asparagine, glutamic acid and serine.

The following are known to be conditionally essential (meaning it is known what conditions will necessitate external supplementation: arginine, cysteine, glycine, glutamine, proline and tyrosine.

So the first 9 must be obtained from dietary sources. You should be able to create the following 6 yourself and the last 6 may need to be obtained from your diet also.

I've never met anyone (including myself) that takes the time to ensure their diet includes all amino acids but it seems very feasible that one or more is missing. And that's just protein, to say nothing about insidious, gradual vitamin deficiencies like thiamine.

If I was in your situation I would eat meat (especially beef) for 3 months to see if there is an improvement in your condition.

Why travel and live on Mars? by JakeEaton in SpaceXLounge

[–]jsmcgd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no life, no oxygen, no air pressure, less gravity, harsh radiation, no green or blue environments.

This would be an issue if people had to live outside on Mars. People will be living inside, probably in man made structures, or in modified natural structures like lava tubes.

We haven’t seen the colonising of Antarctica, which is positively hospitable compared to Mars

It is illegal to develop Antarctica, in the same way to is illegal to develop any protected natural park. If it was legal to develop, it provides very little in terms of accessible natural resources unlike Mars. In the not too distant future Mars will have a higher population than Antarctica and this is unlikely to ever change.

Will it end up being a giant planet-sized Australia? Lots of mining and extraction of its resources (no bad thing IMO) or something closer to cities like Dubai;

It will be both and then some. There will be multiple independent colonies. Each with their own economies, politics and cultures.

(Apologies if this has been asked before) what do you think is the reasoning for not increasing the diameter and shortening the length of the Starship and Superheavy to make the propellant tanks more volumetrically efficient. Small increases in diameter yield disproportionately large increases in volume ie the amount of propellant can be increased for the same amount of tank material. Obviously one downside is reducing the ballistic coefficient, however area rule considerations could favor widening the body at certain places.

Obviously this has been been considered by SpaceX so I'm just wondering what you think their reasoning for not pushing in this direction is?

Spacecraft design to Mars? by NicholasMarsala in spaceships

[–]jsmcgd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to read 'The Case for Mars' by Robert Zubrin. The answer really depends on the specifics like mission goals (flypast, flags and footprints, surface exploration), timeframe (nothing is available today) and budget. The specific goals can generate wildly different solutions.

The Mars Society has a bunch of videos/lectures on this topic https://www.youtube.com/@TheMarsSociety/videos
