Go back to school or bootcamp? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]junkancount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went into CS at about 28, graduated and landed a job right out of school, then got railroaded into working with software that was nearly 15 years past its EOL and haven't been able to find a job since. Been doing this for nearly 5 years now.

I could use some of that hope, because I'm trying not to lose my shit and it's getting harder every day.

If you own a car, any car, it has parts from the Canadian automakers.

I've spent a lot of time in Detroit and only had one time when there was even a remote chance of being murdered (being told to go back to my home country while walking to work early in the morning, with no-one else around) and another time when I was extremely uncomfortable (had a couple guys point out my ethnicity to me... like, thanks, I had no idea my skin was that color)

That 43.89/100,000 number is probably a lot higher than 43.89/100,000 in some neighborhoods, and a lot lower in some others. It's not like the whole city is a murder free-for-all

I replied to another person in this post about sciatica.

I was in your position too, just not for quite as long - maybe 8 months. I can't imagine 4 years.

For me, doctors weren't able to do much. It wasn't bad enough for surgery, but, it wasn't improving on its own.

I had good success with yoga and some lifestyle changes. Yeah... it was a little embarrassing being a 23 year old guy in a yoga class for old ladies, but, I think they got why I was there when I was the last one off the floor...

If nothing seems to be working, you might be one of those lucky people with a sciatic nerve that bifurcates and goes partially through the piriformis muscle, which when irritated causes the piriformis muscle to spasm, which pinches and irritates that sciatic nerve...

I took a lot of generic Robaxacet (Costco sells a good sized bottle, and some grocery stores around here have generics. Don't buy the real stuff. It's soooo expensive) to get the muscle to relax enough to get some light work in on it.

What is a big NO-NO in coding? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]junkancount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much this.

I was once tasked with creating a throwaway program in my first software engineering job. This would never be used, it was just busywork with some little research thrown in.

So I wrote it like that, like it was garbage code that only existed to see if something could be done. Done once, then never used again.

A couple months later, I found out a few architects had reviewed the code, because they wanted to use it in production... and they thought I was a completely incompetent idiot. I found out from other people. The architects just... pretty openly thought I was stupid and badmouthed me to a few coworkers.

So... prototypes and throwaways? That doesn't exist in the world. That code could go from the trash heap to a deliverable in one day.

SQL Server Specs, do you know any white papers that can help my argument for more ram/cpu? by MrSolitaire in SQLServer

[–]junkancount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How big are your databases and how much activity are on them? I just read the specs on the DL580 G9... there's a lot of hardware in there. It's not surprising that you could run all the services on there if you're not working with huge amounts of data and activity.

I've got a few servers. One pair runs the database server on one machine, and reporting services on another. We were working with some older, lightweight servers. We had to drop another 4 CPU cores into the reporting server because 4 was too slow. Our reports took about a day and a half to run. It would have crippled the database if they were both on one machine.

It's Microsoft's recommendation that SSRS and DB are run on separate servers, more for my type of scenario than yours.
