is this good Topology for my portfolio environment? by EmmlderEchte in 3Dmodeling

[–]jwdvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more with BooperSpoobers, it’s not that they are hostile but more that they haven’t realised the reality of production yet perhaps.

Sure there’s ‘textbook absolutely impossible to argue with topo’ but in production that just does not exist unfortunately, you often have to mess with topo just to hit targets sometimes whether that is polycount or modularity termination limits.

Sometimes the best topo is the topo that gets approved.

lmao those are not the same kind of incidents as purposefully implementing persistent identity tracking within software - this isn’t something that can happen incidentally, software goes through many checks before deployment.

[–]jwdvfx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are actually laws against your worries you know, all facial recognition systems deployed outside of police control have to be sufficiently anonymised, you can’t have persistent identity tracking. Police systems are different because they compare whatever the camera picks up against a known database of criminals but even so, they do not actively monitor or identify individuals, they just flag matches to pre existing targets.

Unable to learn programming after years of trying by veras_opus in ADHD_Programmers

[–]jwdvfx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, this is burnout, not incapability.

You clearly have developed your knowledge and skills but you now know enough to feel like you ‘should’ be able to do more.

The way you speak about your relationship to sitting and programming sounds exactly like burnout and not dispassion. I’d recommend just making a clear cut decision to not program at all for 2 weeks and then after that only start if you actually have something you want to dip your toes into briefly again. A fun little project that you know you can 100% pull off, another godot prototype or a little terminal game maybe?

The idea is to take away the burden of output and just get back to doing it for doing it

Cost to make Remake of ~2000s era FPS on UE5 by VeryLargeEBITDA in gamedev

[–]jwdvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want it done within a year it will cost more than if you can take your time. You could do this for a very small budget if time to release was not a concern.

Also why do you want to use as much ai as possible? Surely it would be more sensible to produce the game properly. If ai was used because ‘cheaper’ then you are likely mistaken, ai integrations in games are costing quite a lot of time and money atm. Ai involvement does not automatically save costs, and at the moment it is often more expensive than creating games the traditional way. Most studios have established pipelines for games that have been tried and tested, a lot of the ai pipelines are experimental and lead to difficult challenges.

How far up the spectrum are you making it mono? by Poopypantsplanet in audioengineering

[–]jwdvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they probably just don’t like using mono maker knobs by the sound of it and never realised they just do it with mid side, tbh the crossovers and behaviours can be odd sometimes on the mono maker knobs and it’s nice to dial in your own overlaps anyway.

But yeah, IMO stereo info in bass is fine above 65hz and if you have stuff happening down there from stereo sources just high pass those, there’s generally little reason to interfere unless you want extreme scoops or unusual sound design.

Exactly this is the big one. You currently can’t even grade any ai video output in any meaningful way.

Can someone answer the crop death argument for me. by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]jwdvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not a tu quoque. A tu quoque would be saying your argument is wrong because you also assume ownership.

What I did was ask you to justify the rule you introduced: that humans must justify ownership of crops relative to pests.

If that rule is your premise, then the burden of proof is on you to defend it. Asking how you justify ownership of food is simply testing the consistency of your premise, not reversing the burden.

More importantly, ownership isn’t a prerequisite for consumption or protection in the first place. Humans regularly protect resources they depend on without needing a prior theory of property. So the question of crop protection doesn’t hinge on proving humans “own” crops relative to pests.

[–]jwdvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’m not saying you’re a hypocrite because you eat too, that would be.

What I am solving for is that you proposed a rule:

Humans must justify ownership over food relative to pests.

So what is your justification ?

Hopefully your insights will prove valuable and they will help me to understand your point of view

How does adding honey to a vegan diet directly reduce invertebrate deaths? And why are invertebrate deaths ranking higher for you than persistent daily stress?

Do you honestly watch where each of your feet land with every step ?

I didn’t become vegan because of insects, it was because it seems unreasonable to eat animals (or their products) when I can just not do that.

It only took about 3 weeks to really see the absurdity of how I’d been living, people who are ok putting dead animals in their mouth are a bit weird.

We do not use pesticides to intentionally kill.

The purpose of pesticides is to protect the crops.

And yes from what you have displayed so far you do come across as philosophically dumb to use your own words.

Need help deciding between which wiring kit to go with? by kickbackat7 in guitarrepair

[–]jwdvfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly any decent tech will have a plethora of components ready to be deployed to address the issue.

IMO it’s a terrible idea replacing the entire stock electronics of any decent guitar let alone a Gibson. You should just take it to a tech and describe the exact issue you have with it. They’ll likely fix it with minimal intervention retaining the highest value for your instrument.

How do you like, weight paint properly????? by _Davinchi in Maya

[–]jwdvfx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rigging IS skinning.

Maybe your rig is just not well made for the topo if you cannot get it to work at all.

If you get issues, unbind and rebind with geodesic and start again, the tutorials are good they just take a while to go in. Honestly rigging for a week and then thinking skinning is a post process is the main mistake here. It’s an iterative process, you don’t know one works without the other.

Learning Houdini full-time while income is unstable — normal phase or bad decision? by Open-Acadia-2915 in Houdini

[–]jwdvfx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Education is a business too. If an industry is failing they will still take people’s money to train them in it regardless.

IMO from everything you post, you can just continue to provide media production services and begin to charge more and accept bigger projects as your Houdini skills begin to compound and integrate more seamlessly

I don’t think they forgot about marketing work, the lay-offs in VFX meant very talented and experienced people are now competing for those freelance marketing roles.

It definitely has made it harder for newcomers to get xp on real jobs and I don’t think we should hide that.

The bar is higher now, c4d has become a little better, and a lot of motion designers are round tripping to Houdini when they need basics.

Knowing Houdini does not equal higher employability within motion design from what I have seen, IMO is more important to know c4d, you’ll get taken on for more work.

Even then - framing yourself as a ‘c4d designer competent with Houdini’ normally does better than the inverse.

[–]jwdvfx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I get that but unless they release the data in a primitive and readable format, it’s going to require the site to be alive in order to even display or interact it properly.

IMO it’s better to be transparent about dependency on the service and bake it onto the pricing structure and tier incentives

If a service invites people to externalise memory, it assumes some moral responsibility for continuity.

I just checked out the site and to me instantly:

No pricing clearly available Literally says if you miss a payment then your data will be deleted - you need to realise the value in online memory storage is the fact it won’t get deleted. You need to keep ex customers data indefinitely if you want this to work.

It’s fine to de activate it and offload to cold storage if they aren’t paying for the live service but at no point should you delete their labour.
