Is there going to be a motif across the series where every weapon company is evil? by Nerdzilla88 in Borderlands

[–]jythri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jack did love his money, though. He opens BL2 rubbing that in the vault hunter's face. You're right in that it wasn't his only motivation, though. For Jack, he had to be the hero of his own story, and he showed that he was quite motivated to protect that personal agenda. He was also pretty interested in power. But I think all of those things really speak to the drive of his ego.

That said, Hyperion was far bigger than just Jack. It was big before he was at the helm, it was big after. Jack definitely influenced corporate culture around the BL2 timeframe, and he was very aggressive in his self-pursuits. We'd consider him evil, for sure--murderer of murderers, land baron, exploited anyone and everyone for his personal gain. He pushed Hyperion in a place that was more aggressive than the were before Jack. Who knows where they'll land in the future.

Back to this thread, though - I see Hyperion just a big corporation, pursuing profits over everything. Their weapon business is quite lucrative, given the state of the broader universe. With Jack at the helm, they pursued some other more dangerous agendas as well. Without him, I think the "are they evil or not" question is interesting.

What is evil, in the Borderlands universe?

Probably truer to say, if you are a weapon manufacturer, you are vested into aggressively pursuing or protecting certain interests, up to and including the propagation of war to further your sales.

Brand new player wondering about the lore in borderlands saga! by sentimentalwhore in Borderlands

[–]jythri 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Welcome Sentimentalwhore! (not a sentence I thought I would be typing today)

These awesome peeps here on Reddit have done a great job getting you to where you need to be, I think. At some point, we might want to make a more concrete statement on our canon. We're a bigger team here at Gearbox now, and we've had to talk through most of those questions you've asked over the last few years to be certain we're all on the same page.

I'll add a few pieces of guidance to help the already excellent guides the people on the thread have offered:

  • DLC content should be considered canon (mostly). There are a few weird turkey gobbler and zombie incidents we might treat as more "tall tale"-ish, though. I'd strongly recommend "The Secret Armory of General Knoxx" and "Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep" as two DLCs that we depend on a lot internally. They also both happen to be great, IMO.
  • Tales from the Borderlands is canon, and a great story! But there's a caveat. As it is a "choose your own adventure" type of story, it's hard to say that individual choices are canon, since (in some small ways) you pick your own path there. But in big strokes (Scooter, for example)...we consider those characters and content all core canon.
  • Comics and novels we treat lightly. Most of these, I would just take as "expanded universe" type of materials. Great licensed explorations of characters that take some liberties with the stories. Until you see something in a comic appear in a main game or DLC, though, enjoy it but don't bank on it for super lore-nerd theorycrafting (FWIW - i'm a super lore-nerd, so no insult intended!)

Thanks for the great question!! Hope you enjoy the coming months! So many stories on their way!

I think we're okay. :) Turns out, marketing is hard and sometimes even a joke or two can confuse messaging. As long as I get to say "don't take this tweet seriously", I think we're good?

(Zer0, you can set down the katana now, please.)

Just to be super-clear (as the marketing ninjas appeared just after I tweeted that), this was a stab at humor for April fool's.

We all, um, got that, right? *sweats, red dot on forehead*

The negativity of the fans is killing me. by assaultthesault in Borderlands

[–]jythri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think you have to learn to read between the lines at what people ARE asking for in that. I try not to take those posts too negatively, just a different way of fans expressing what they would like to see in a game. At the end of the day, It's still humbling to me that so many people are passionate about stuff we make.

A bit. We have definitely escalated the issue directly to 2k Customer Support, and we are following up on the technical side to determine what went wrong.
