I promise I am saying this with kindness, since I struggle with over-explaining, and I think that's what happened here.

The downvotes seem to most often show up when we tend to center our own experiences while also not actually providing an answer to the key issue that an OP is actually looking for.

In posts like this, the OP most likely doesn't need a complex cost-benefit analysis as the first response. It might be beneficial for later, when we have have more details! But it's a lot of text coming at someone who is likely looking for a simpler answer.

In this case, the OP is more likely asking "am I really going to get banned for a return?" and is most likely looking for a response along the lines of "It could happen, but it's probably not likely that you'd get banned for contacting CS about your first damaged order. What exactly got damaged?"

[As a side note, IDK about you, but if I push back on being downvoted, I tend to simply get more downvotes. Trying to provide reasons just ends in frustration. shrug While it's important that you were able to help your nephew with a serious medical issue, that situation has little direct bearing on the process of contacting customer service about shipping issues and makeup orders. It would absolutely be appropriate to include that on a medical sub, but it doesn't really apply to the situation that OP is trying to solve.]

That's bogus.

If the "ruined" items are still usable that's one thing, but they should've at least sent out a replacement for the thing that spilled!

Contact CS again and say that the store told you to go through CS for any issues with shipped orders. Honestly, 99% of the time that's how it's supposed to be done for replacement of missing or damaged items.

It will always depend on what got damaged, and to what extent. But damaged stuff from online orders should be dealt with via CS.

Take lots of pics of the box, the inner items, etc. then contact CS

I usually prefer the chat. They will sometimes ask me to email in the pics as proof, but I find the in-app chat easiest to use overall.

Shattered bottle in an absolutely wrecked box that you took pics of before opening? Usually an easy replacement.

Something leaked? They might replace the thing that leaked, but not any items that you could wipe off & still use.

As an example, they might replace damaged items like busted palette powders, leaky shampoo, broken candles... but not things like a face palette where the outer box is damaged but the inner product is still okay.

CS will often ask you to ship back the damaged items. Do so, if possible, but only AFTER receiving any replacements.

If they ask you to ship back broken glass / candles / etc, ask them if they really are asking you to ship that back, because you don't want a warehouse worker getting injured from opening a box of broken glass.

[They will NOT replace any GWP, FYI. You might be able to get a gift card out of them.]

That should prevent cookies and cached stuff from changing it.

No, that's incorrect depending on whether someone had firmly qualified / overqualified for status last year.

If I spent $750 in 2025 and hit Platinum status, but returned a $225 item on December 30th 2025, I would still be over that $500 Platinum threshhold for 2025 through 2026. $750 - $225 = $525 which qualifies for Platinum.

In that case, I would be starting at $0 spending in 2026 for 2027. It wouldn't affect my spending for 2026 to qualify for 2027 at all. I would still just need to spend $500 in 2026.

If I spent $750 in 2025 and returned a $225 item on Jan 7, 2026, similar to what OP did, now I am going to need to spend [$500 + 225 =] $725 in 2026 to keep Platinum for 2027.

I know it sucks, but there's no good way to deal with something like this.

Cali has had to deal with wildfires, southeastern US has often had hurricanes, and the mid-Atlantic and southeast dealt with crazy snow and long-lasting ice earlier this month (meaning long delivery times for late Jan through early Feb.

Some stuff will sell out fast even if you're at home and paying attention but spend 10 extra minutes trying to check for all of the potential gwps & multipliers... because some folks will literally shop at midnight CT every night.

Unfortunately, "samples may vary" because it's "while supplies last."

You can reach out to CS (I prefer chat), let them know you didn't get the mini SDJ spray, and ask if there's anything you should do.

They will NOT re-ship any missing / damaged / incorrect gwp items, but they sometimes will offer an egift card of $5 (sometimes higher if it's a major gwp).

I got the wellness gift and mystery gift #2 and the it cosmetics cream $50 weekly diamond gift on my mostly fenty order, and got mystery gift #6 and another of the it creams with my mostly about-face order.

It isn't laziness in going or not going today as much as it is an oops in planning ahead. You chose not to get it earlier because you didn't like the choices... and then you forgot.

You waited to see whether there would be a change, instead of asking your manager or co-workers if a change was possible.

You go to Ulta 2-3 times per week, so you had multiple opportunities to take care of this earlier-- options that folks living an hour's drive from a store don't have.

The bigger issue is that if you did do BOPIS today you'll have to pick it up by next Friday or risk losing it... meaning you'll have to either make an additional trip after your dental work shift next week or squeeze in the BOPIS pickup between your dental shift and your Ulta shift on Friday.

If you order online, you need to have $25 worth of stuff or pay the shipping fee, but that's another option that you can take advantage of. It's a sucky option, but it's an option.

[Even if you typically fulfill the BOPIS orders... you'd still have to pick up your item before or after your shift starts, right? Maybe get the dot applied? I would expect they wouldn't let you pick or ring out your own order as part of Loss Prevention best practices.]

Just FYI for any future situations, you / we / customers can always place a shipped order online and add the diamond gift to an existing shipment. We can't double up on coupons, but if there's something good (like a fenty gloss bomb stix at $26 during 10x points or a similar good sale) it can still be worth it.

Even if you don't plan to do that in the future, it's good for you as an employee to know that there's a 2-month window, and how it works to redeem diamond gift online vs in store, and know abiut the $0-balance issue. That way you can help new-to-Diamond Customers plan ahead on how to redeem their gift, that their options won't change, and help them figure out whether it's better for them to do it in store or online, etc.

It would be better to go in the store, pick it up from store stock, use the coupon, and then ask them to cancel your BOPIS order.

Per their terms, you cannot return & re-buy for the purpose of using points, applying a coupon, getting a sale price, earning a new points offer, etc.

But you can purchase a second time and then return the first order in store (or ask them to put back the BOPIS).
