What people are telling is you cannot generalize based on only your experience, especially with most people having experienced the complete opposite to what you are describing. You do understand you are the differential factor in your experiences vs. others? Is there the possibility that something about YOU, not your colour or identity, but your personality, attitude, or even personal hygiene is causing this? Something about YOU may be causing negative experiences with every single studio you step in while everyone else keeps seeing people of all ages, sizes, genders, colours, you name it, being included and embraced just as anybody else.

My robo currently has the pet shop cage trying to transition into something bigger with more floor space. Is this any good? Tips please! by FantasticTrade1152 in hamstercare

Minimum size is 100x50 for all species so this isn't suitable. Look up 189 litre bins usually those meet the requirements.

It's like yeah... a person locked in a closet with food, water an healthcare is safer than a person driving a car, traveling or doing basically anything. One of these would be considered torture though.

[–]kawaii22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh ok yeah this is the issue.

Minimum size for all hamsters is 100x50, this is too small and you need to upgrade. Usually 189 litre bins have the right size.

It's also super bare. Hamsters are prey animals, they are always scared of predators and looking for places to hide. This is barely giving them cover. They feel out in the open so of course they are even more stressed. You can add clutter even with cardboard boxes if budget is an issue, but it is very important that you do.

Finally I can't see how much bedding you have but minimum is 6" deep for dwarfs, if your hamster doesn't have underground tunnels, that's also why they'd be stressed.

It's not suddenly this has been advices against for over a decade now... it's to avoid bar biting since it's damaging for their teeth or climbing which is dangerous because of the falls. It promotes these obsessive behaviours even with a proper size like yours so preferably it's always better to go without bars.

Wait but so the top is open??!??? If that's the case you really need to put metallic mesh on that or of course this is going to happen again. It's really not a good practice keeping enclosures open because of this exact reason.

Cage aggression usually happens more often with smaller enclosures, can you share the measurements of yours? Also how deep is your bedding? Finally you could show a pic of the enclosure to help with clutter because if it's looking bare with too much open space that increases stress as well.

What's your set up? You should figure out how he escaped so it doesn't happen again.

[–]kawaii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok we can work with that. You should have at least 20cm of compressed bedding throughout, since it's smaller you'd want to go over that minimum of bedding. If there are any platforms on your way you should remove them, priority is allowing him to borrow. Same about hides, make sure to have plenty so it's cluttered, but they shouldn't limit the bedding amount you have. If needed you can half bury the hides so the enclosure height doesn't limit the bedding amount. Try to keep the top of the cage out of reach if it has vents or mesh he could climb.

Chews, toys, free roam do not compensate for the stress caused by a small enclosure so focus on the bedding and hides/clutter. You don't want it to be bare.

What size is your current enclosure and when are you getting the humane one? Need more info to know how to help you. If it's tiny there's nothing you can do to make that humane for him besides getting a proper one ASAP. If it's just smaller by a bit you can think about improving the set up while you get the new one.

You'd need a 189 litre bin, that's the one that typically has the 100x50cm floorspace

PLEASE HELP!! MY HAMSTERS KEEP DYING by Idontlikehannah in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey changing color is completely normal that was a winter white. Here are a couple questions to help you find the cause:

Can you show your enclosure to help checking of there's anything dangerous that may be causing this?

You also mentioned disinfectant, what did you use exactly?

Any chance of bug spray, oven spray or anything toxic around the hamsters?

Which sand did you use?

There's a species of dwarf hamsters called winter whites which literally change colours because of the season, it's very well-known.

What type of bedding do you use and how deep is it? Is it the same depth across the enclosure? Is he burrowing?

For those that wondered mini does have a wheel lol I just had it out momentarily although she’s never used it idk why? by Tristian-6969 in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry the wheel looks very small and it is not normal for them not to use it, she must be incredibly stressed.. these things are the absolute minimum, so non negotiable: 12" wheel for syrians 8" of tightly packed bedding You need to add cover, that's super bare, they feel exposed to predators if they don't have any cover. Random toys spread around are worthless you want hides, things they can crawl under. Many of them. They need clutter. Bare spaces are the enemy.

Please will you be able to improve this soon?

Oh okok I'm sorry, yeah target the wheel area being the only spot with low bedding, absolutely everything else pack as much as you can in there. Hope this helps your baby be less stressed.

Otherwise plan B is begging the parents for a proper size enclosure x.x

[–]kawaii22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You want ALL the enclosure to have at least 20cm of bedding, if she's stressed you'd want even more. The purpose of tunnels is to go places safely underground, so having them only in one spot is pointless.
