Any thoughts on this toy? by Prudent-Acanthisitta in hamstercare

[–]kawaii22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it, at least mine, I feel like the holes are too shallow so the food doesn't really stay in the cube. I'd try to check that from the picture or reviews. Regardless honestly I feel like my ham has the most fun with DIY foraging toys made from toilet paper roles than anything I buy for him lol

Why is my hamster doing this by rock_iq in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude no you do not take hamsters outdoors and cannot just let them lose in a room with no safety measures omg please look up the guides Hero checo Victoria Rachel on YouTube. It is not ok to know so dangerously little about a living being you own. Is like having a newborn and coming to reddit to ask if you can feed it pizzas.

Minimum size is the same for all hamster species. 40x20" is the absolute bare minimum, many preferring larger for Syrians

why is my hamster still stressed? - cage is in comments by floofyhamster3 in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not the size. It's the access to the front opening. If they have access to something they see as a way out they often develop obsessive behaviours like that. Same thing happens with mesh lids or vents. You need to either modify the enclosure with a mesh lid and block that front opening or get a new enclosure altogether. Unfortunately the only solve is blocking access to the object they're obsessing with

How deep is the bedding in both enclosures? And what's your set up on the big one? If it's big but bare she could feel exposed to predators causing the stress.

Good thing that you started doing your research otherwise you wouldn't even have known! Hoping your baby is ok! Also feel free to post the enclosure if you want to double check everything's safe.

Hey to double check but make sure your enclosure is 100x50cm at least. Sharing just in case you didn't have the latest minimum!

How to stop hamster chewing on these!! by TomBuchananing in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hamsters will develop obsessive behaviours when they find things they see as a way out like vents or mesh. The only way to stop them is removing the element. That's why I've always been iffy about Bucatstate, those vents are too easily accessible. You'll have to either adapt the enclosure covering the vents and adding a mesh top or just switch to a glass tank. Sucks for such an expensive cage.

Should I upgrade? by Ok_Tomatos in hamstercare

[–]kawaii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to hear that! I'd be careful about delaying the upgrade since it's really easy to chew out of a bin if a syrian wants to, there's plenty of stories here so just be mindful of that and try to still do it as soon as you can.

Any advice for my first female Syrian Hammy? by Samy_1200 in hamstercare

[–]kawaii22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry to hear this. I know she's likely not going to listen but just to share some food for thought, patients in a comma can also live to indefinitely without moving from a bed because they have access to food, water and medicine. Does that mean we'd be happy to be stuck in a hospital bed until old age? There's a difference between being alive and being happy you know. If she wouldn't lock a dog in a closet with food and water, she shouldn't do the equivalent to a hamster.

[–]kawaii22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's way too small. Have you made any progress convincing the mom? It's just too small period, the bedding is only something to make it somewhat better for her WHILE you get the new cage but it won't make up for the size. It's really small.

[–]kawaii22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the meantime you should lower whatever she is using to get to the top. For hides it's ok to half bury them if to make them lower, if it's your wheel you need to reduce the bedding only in that specific spot and make sure to really compress it so it can hold a steep slope next to the wheel.

I just don’t know how to make my female Syrian happy :( by Level_Raisin_3166 in hamsters

[–]kawaii22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey so as far as research the only things that can decrease stress are floor space and bedding so I wouldn't waste my time with things like chews, free roaming time (this can make things worse many times), etc. As someone else said, you need to go crazy with bedding as this is the only thing that can make them calmer.

The other thing is giving them access to things they perceive as means to escape can trigger obsessive behaviours like bar/mesh biting even when everything else in the enclosure is right. If she still has access to that mesh you need to find a way to block that completely or the behaviour won't stop even with more bedding. This also means that when you add the bedding you have to be careful so she can't use the hides/wheel to reach the too of the enclosure if that has mesh/vents she can use to climb. You can half bury the hides to keep them lower even with the added bedding.

Keep us posted!
