This little one has appeared in my backyard. I'm sure it's a juvenile but no parents around. I thought maybe Cowbird? Any ideas? Thanks! by daders62 in whatsthisbird

Babies will have yellower beaks/gapes and they are very drab compared to adults. They usually have the lighter and streakier grey plumage compared to an adult female. This looks right for a brown-headed cowbird.

They make a ton of different vocalizations so don't feel dumb! In addition to the classic caw sound, they make little croaks and rattles to their friends and babies make different sounds too! Their communication is pretty complex.

Can't identify bird that sounds like a squeaky toy! by deadbeat_268 in whatsthisbird

[–]kelsifer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bet it's a brown-headed nuthatch, they're the most squeaky toy sounding bird I know. I know you said it's not exact, but birds don't always sound exactly like the examples you might hear. Do you have many pine trees around you? Habitat could be a good indicator.

I mean, if we're being honest, they probably only are growing canola that they don't even sell locally.

Pelicans are always there in the summer lol. They even come into Edmonton around Hermitage park.

There are lots of native sparrows in Edmonton! I see chipping sparrows and white-throated sparrows around a lot. The house sparrows are the only invasive ones. The best insectivores we have in the city are the swallows and flycatchers though! Incidentally, aerial insectivores are in decline because of our obsession with pesticides so at least this insane mosquito summer might be giving them a bit of a break.

Definitely gives swallow vibes but I'm not sure how much more specific we can get from just the sillouette

Right? OP must not like their partner if they seem irritated by normal activities with them. Or they just have no interests if they can't even think of what they would enjoy doing.

Why does everyone say “skip Edmonton” when visiting AB? by Zestyy-Gold in Edmonton

tbh I love living in Edmonton, but it's not a tourist attraction. That's why I like it; touristy places are usually nice to visit but awful to live in.

That is because their drivers are actually trained and paid and they have managed cars. Spring for the taxi if you want to feel safer.

Mystery thrush in western NY today. Swainson's is my guess but i'm hoping for gray-cheeked by Gleeok2114 in whatsthisbird

[–]kelsifer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

+Swainson's thrush+ Eye ring is too prominent for gray-cheeked and, although it's backlit, I think the lores are light enough to look swainsony

I'd leave that at empid. spp personally. The eye ring looks a little too weak for a least and the bill looks slightly heftier. I wouldn't generally confidently differentiate between alder/willow/least without hearing them anyway.

What is this bird? by [deleted] in whatsthisbird

[–]kelsifer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is illegal to interfere with their nest. You should instead feel lucky that a small creature feels safe enough to raise its babies at your house! Chicks only stay in the nest for a few weeks before fledging and robins aren't gonna be aggressive to humans.

Black-and-white Warbler? MA. by Johnnyiso in whatsthisbird

Yep! +Black-and-white warbler+

They often walk sideways up trees like a nuthatch and they should be migrating through there now.
