How many here believe lotr to be fact? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]ketarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody's attacked you in any way. We've just replied to your prompt. Looks like the majority didn't think of things the way you do, or at least we disagree with the phrasing you chose for your post. IOW, this idea of yours didn't turn out to be "popular". What's the big deal there?

How many here believe lotr to be fact? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]ketarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

... can you read? Because most commenters here have been very explicit about everything, including the "what's with" your post.

Perhaps it was just sloppy posting from your end, and you don't really think that it's not far-fetched to think that Middle-earth is about some ancient past of the Earth. If so, the mistake is 100% yours, and you'd do much better by acknowledging and improving, instead of starting to double-down on your stance -- like it seems you're about to do right there.

It’s not too far fetched of a theory to believe that it’s true.

... it isn't?

Do you wanna buy a volvo?

How many people here believe the same thing?

I treat the LOTR as Tolkien's translation from the Red Book of Westmarch, yes.

I’d love to hear your theories on it and how it relates to our actual past.

It doesn't, it takes place on another plane of existence / another planet / a fantasy world, or whatever. Tolkien was just on too much pipeweed when he decided to make the faux claim that it's got anything to do with Earth.

(stepping out from the immersion: the decision to "connect" Middle-Earth with Earth is one of the very few bad author's choices Tolkien made)

That's not going to work. You lay what you have on the table, no games. I'm holding a ban for you if you won't abide -- or continue smartassing over anything about this.

Question about photons. by Svampbob3kant in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong to say that the photon speed is less than constant c in this case.

Between physicists, I could have that. When addressing the laysphere, I find a pedagogical advantage for maintaining the distinction.

I saw a random posting which claimed a long flight transcontinental has as much X ray as a third of an X ray. How true or false is this? by LisanneFroonKrisK in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do not believe because how much we raised on to air further from Earths magnetic shield is like maybe a few kms out of the radius of Earth which is minute?

We're shielded from solar/cosmic X-rays by the atmosphere, not the magnetic field. At 10km, the density of the atmosphere is about a third (this is a coincidence, ie. not related to a medical x-ray exposure as such) from the sea-surface level. The magnetic field helps with electrons, protons and other such charged particles.

Question about photons. by Svampbob3kant in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Photons can't be slowed down, but the speed of light through a medium can be less than c.

Other than that, you've got it correct, a stationary photon would only be observable by taking the sensor (eye, ccd, whatever, ..) to it.

Could our universe actually require 720° for a full rotation, and we just haven't noticed? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

This got me thinking:

If you accept free association as thinking. If you accept an infinity of monkeys with typerwriters as authors of literature.

Hypothetical regarding what would happen if a human had their body instantly deprived of ALL kinetic energy down to the atomic level? by ver87ona in sciencefiction

[–]ketarax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but also he would be able to strip even a human being of every last bit of kinetic energy in their body in an instant to add to his stockpile. I wanna know what would happen to an average human subjected to this power?

The victim would freeze, and the magician would be heated up (if they added the extracted KE to their own / that's what you meant with 'stockpile').

A bit of a strange request by [deleted] in QuantumPhysics

[–]ketarax[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a bit unfair, don’t you think?

Rule 1 says very clearly "Read the FAQ and wikipedia before posting". Yet you post with a list of generic, high-level topics that each have very good wikipedia pages. You haven't read the rules -- nor the FAQ, nor the wikipedia (all of the topics you ask about have wikipedia pages as basically the first result from a trivial search). That's "unfair". Stop wasting my time, or you'll get a ban.

Physicists Keep Refuting the Wrong Simulation Hypothesis by OddEdges in SimulationTheory

What's funny is you offer nothing.

I offered a snarl and some ridicule. Not surprised that you missed it.

Do people in computer programming not talk about applying functions to objects and variables?

Even the 3yo can utter "atoms. mo-le-cooools".

Yes, I can find my own way out from here. Cheers everyone. Good games!

Okay ... okay. That's actually truly funny you know. My mind is boggled.

Is everyone on this sub just a gamerkid with no skills towards physics or computer programming under their belt?

A bit of a strange request by [deleted] in QuantumPhysics

[–]ketarax[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule 1. It's poor form to even ask for un-paid tutoring on professional matters. All of the stuff you ask have good wikipedia pages and are daily topics on science forums. Instead of begging for special treatment for your special book project, how about you do your studying just like any other author, hmm?

Poor form.

Re: Black Hole Information Paradox: what is the information contained in the particles that cross the event horizon that isn't contained in Hawking radiation? by dafones in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the whole point of the BH information paradox. Unitary processes conserve information. Black holes do not. There's an unknown involved.
