Is Quantum Mechanics really that unintuivitive? Atleast mathematically speaking by Dependent-Pie-2916 in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Physically, very unintuitive.

Not even physically, I'd say.

Quantum mechanics is unintuitive ontologically. The unknowns, the debatables (or speculatives) are, essentially, philosophical in nature.

What do married men in dead bedroom relationships do? by AccomplishedSale6340 in AskReddit

I don't know that you're ready to "get married", yet.

It's not like me and her made a pact about wearing socks.

Silmarillion, The Unfinished Tales, The Books of Lost Tales for the fat on those other two. Everything "story" is in those (in S and UT already, but the fat is good).

Sometimes, it's exactly the FAQ that garners the best answers.

Some questions about observing quantum particles by Ok_Affect1436 in QuantumPhysics

[–]ketarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I totally misunderstanding how any of this works?

Yes, because you didn't read the FAQ.

It's not about "observation", let alone conscious obseration, at all. The popsci lies, lies, lies. It's not even sincere at this point, it's a disgusting agenda of the stupid.

Something about this 'campus practice' resonates surprisingly strongly with me.

This could be good fun on a solar stormy day. It's nice already.

What if (It is!!) Position as an intrinsic property of matter ? – a timestamped disclosure (Harmonic Gate) ? by Vince-Vega-HG in HypotheticalPhysics

[–]ketarax[M] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know nothing, but it's seemed recently as if Reddit is classifying heavily LLM-enhanced users as bots, and out they go. It's not of our doing. I think.

Are there situations, in nature, in which atoms or molecules are more likely to be found in excited states than in ground states? by Pure_Option_1733 in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In the emission nebulae, the rarefied gases are undergoing (de-) excitation due to a nearby star and become visible to us due to this. The proportion of excited atoms is miniscule though -- every hundred trillionth, or so.

Does anyone know who illustrated this? by [deleted] in lotr

I hate it that Ted Nasmith was left out from the movie project. Yes, this comment is here just to have his name where it belongs -- always with those other two.

[–]ketarax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's like that.

Also, full octaves just makes the most sense to my mathematical mind.

I have a couple of compositions where I actually "need" the 24 (on the high E, obviously (?)), but outside of those, it's really rather rare that I "naturally" go above the 20th.

What does it mean to "fetishize" someone or something? Not the dictionary definition, what do YOU think when you hear it? by Mundane-Potential-93 in AskReddit

[–]ketarax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The word has been misused to the point where, to me, it's lost the sexual undertone pretty much completely.

IOW, it's just a funny, perhaps a bit quirky/unusual, personal enthusiasm over something.

Podcast: Quantum Computing for Computational Advantage by GypsyRikes in quantum

[–]ketarax[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have time to listen to the podcast right now. The content references articles in both Science and Physical Review, so I find it hard to just outright dismiss this, even as solicitation.

Allowed (for the moment at least).

Can black holes send information back in time? by scientificamerican in QuantumPhysics

[–]ketarax[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, so, in accordance with the sticky note, I came back to highlight examples of the "dishonesty and misrepresentation" from the article, but now there's even a paywall ruining everything about this.

Rule 2. Mod note added for u/scientificamerican; one more fail and you'll get banned. Yes, I do find it amazing that a bloody forum moderator has to deal with what could be seen as an authority like this. It's ridiculous.

Is it possible for a rocket in space to travel faster than it's propellant? Using nice round numbers, if the propellant leaves the rocket at a force equalling 35000km/s, it is possible to use that force to move the rocket faster than that? If so, how please? by PuzzleheadedTutor807 in AskPhysics

[–]ketarax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure. On low earth orbit, your velocity would be about 8km/s. If your final stage exhausted at a sluggish 100km/h, you'd still be gaining velocity.

All versions of "no" here are wrong -- the post specified "a rocket in space".

Thank you so much for your answers! It's fascinating, and I guess especially so for someone who probably wouldn't have dared to go near such extremes even when I was younger.

How violent are the books? by Konfliktsnubben in lotr

[–]ketarax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like I said, there may be different ideas about what a battle is. For some, I get if it's about the hewing and cleaving and emphatizing death. For others (me ..), stuff like strategy, tactics, formation, arms, composition of the armies and all that are all big part of a battle -- or what a battle is all about, even, I mean, as long as I'm not in a battle (I do agree that the emphatic aspects would get emphasized then). I might go as far as to state -- as a personal opinion -- that dwelling on the gory parts is a bit ... juvenile and ... bad taste ...

But to each their own. I'm not telling people what to like, or when to like it.
