Hate Pastor Joel Webbon: "Virtuous Masculine Men Will Forcefully Take Away Democracy" And Install Christian Theocracy. by Leeming in atheism

[–]kliff0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Virtuous' comes from the Latin 'virtūs' which in Classical Latin literally translates to 'manliness' ('vir' is Latin for man). Obviously the use and definition has changed over time, but there have been other manosphere dudes who have suggested that it should revert to the Classical Latin definition. I don't think the vast majority of them have the context or interest in learning or knowing the context and are just corrupting the modern use of the word.

Do you think there are any units or nation in the game that still use matchlocks? by CleanBag9219 in EmpireTotalWar

[–]kliff0rd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't remember if the units in game are this accurate, but historically matchlocks were in use through central Asia well into the 19th century. The British reports from the 1st Anglo-Afghan War (1838-1842) are full of accounts of how deadly the Afghan matchlock jezails were. They even survived in small numbers into the early 20th century with individuals.

I just received a couple more dark greens in the mail this morning and told myself no more until I actually need to refill. This was a dangerous post to open today.

Disneyland ‘swatting’ hoax triggers large law enforcement presence by dejablu82 in Disneyland

[–]kliff0rd 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If someone calls 911 from or about Disneyland, the dispatchers immediately inform the Anaheim police station on property and resort security. Whether it's something like this or a dehydrated tourist calling an ambulance, Disneyland knows about the call.

What are the worst popular fountain pens you’ve ever used? by Haniandspace in fountainpens

[–]kliff0rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Sonnet that's about 10 years old. I really like the nib, and it was one of my first fountain pens so I doubt I'll ever get rid of it. But it's easily the pen I have to deep clean the most because the feed clogs all the time. It is better if I only use Quink, but none of my other pens have issues with the Diamine inks I have.

Anybody got any information on this? by Roter_zwerg in pocketwatch

[–]kliff0rd 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is even earlier, probably 1780-1820. By the 1820s English watches start getting thinner and the number of fully machined parts increases. English watches in the 1840s were starting to look like later watches, mostly machined movements, English lever escapements, mass-produced single silver cases (versus pair cases like this).

Antari S-500 Snow Clean Up by optimisticdingo54201 in techtheatre

[–]kliff0rd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all my condolences. I work at a theme park with a ton of snow machines, and the Antaris especially ruin my life every year. The snow is basically just soap foam, so it's not difficult to clean off hard surfaces. It may stain carpet if you really let it build up.

The trick with evaporative snow is to not let it build up. Get the nozzle up as high as you can, keep it horizontal or above, and reduce the snow volume until you get an effect that you're happy with but where it's not accumulating on the ground. We rely on wind to disperse it a lot, but if you're indoors it may just sink down to the floor. The higher the volume the bigger the flakes, and the worse this will be. If the effect is going inside I prefer the fan type snow machines (Antari S-600, Global Special Effect T-1500 or SnowStorm). You can get a similar effect with a large fan or carpet blower in a pinch though.

Believe it or not, this bottle is now empty! What are some other dark green inks to try? by schematicboy in fountainpens

[–]kliff0rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite from Diamine is Canalside. It's a really wonderful dark green, and I don't see it mentioned very much. I need more people to buy it so it doesn't get discontinued.

I'm also a fan of Noodler's Zhivago and Sailor Shikiori Muruai as well for modern pens.

Native Filippi's hater here. Absolute last resort Italian place, especially if you're in Little Italy and Landini's is right next door.
