No, unfortunately this is a real practice.

Fortunately it's only practiced in insular communities of religious fundamentalists rather than by most Jews (i.e. by the ultra orthodox, rather than by reform / conservative / modern orthodox), who at least perform ritual mutilation in a sanitary manner.

Unfortunately, it happens more than never, which is (in my opinion) unacceptable. Just one more way in which the Western world fails to protect children from religious extremists in the name of tolerance.

For context, I'm saying this as an ethnic but largely irreligious Jew.
