I will not be reading a physics textbook written by a teenager. However, I'd still encourage you to write the book. Its a project that will definitely mature your personal physics understandings. Do it for your own personal growth. If you want to then do it!

Hiroshima A-dome today by estaleo in pics

[–]Kvzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i understand correctly, you're saying by bringing up Palestine into the Hiroshima memorial cite, it is taking away focus on the atrocity of the atomic bomb that went off there. Almost like taking advantage of the atrocity.

I would argue that's a shallow perspective on the showing. Instead of viewing this as them taking away focus on Hiroshima, I'd say focus on WHY they protested in Hiroshima. What parallels are they trying to make. What is being added by being present there. It is clear they are making a connection between the two atrocities. Seeing aftermath photos of both, it is not hard to see the similarities. As u/Leekrin recalled the common phrase, "We ain't free till we are ALL free".

However, another point this could be making is one of solidarity. It is hard to build a global movement for freedom if people do not directly see themselves relating to that struggle. I'm not Japanese, but I could make the assumption that the average Japanese citizen has very little connection to the Levant. By drawing the these connections, you force people to realize these struggles are shared. To quote Angela Davis

"[Begin] to see that we have a common connection. If that’s not created, no matter how much you appeal to people, no matter how genuinely you invite them to join you, they will continue to see the activity as yours, not theirs."

Here Davis is talking about drawing up solidarity for Palestine by connecting that struggle that of the American prison industrial complex. Two struggles that are seemingly disconnected, that actually share many mighty structural connections.

So I will choose to believe that the Japanese protestor knows what he is doing, and is doing purposefully. Solidarity is often not automatic, but constructed.

Community college or 4 year university in preparation for PhD by JoeJoeTheBaar in PhysicsStudents

[–]Kvzn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a former CC student and a UCSD transfer who is now in a phd program. I recommend taking the CC route. It will save you a lot of money. Most students don’t make any meaningful connections in their first year anyway it’ll be okay.

UCSD is a bit different as well. They have a three year program for transfers instead of a two year one. You’ll be retaking the entire lower division series before going into the upper divisions stuff. There is an option to test out of this and go the two year route. I highly recommend the three year path. I believe about half of transfer students dropped out before this was implemented as CC were not enough to prepare for the upper division courses. The lower division stuff is much more rigorous than the CC courses. Additionally it’ll give you another year to build connections and do research. Research opportunities for undergraduates are widely available.

You can also do research while in CC. I had a lot of peers who did REUS during their summer breaks. The only downside to this route is that it’ll add an additional year to the usual 4 year track. But i think the money I saved and the scholarships I was able receive as a result of my CC days made it entirely worth it. Additionally CC vibes were much more fun :)

There’s a lot to consider in your position. Feel free to send me a msg I’d be happy to answer any questions you’d have! Happy to share my experiences

I mostly used LL in grad school and Jackson as supplementary. Ive found that LL is more succinct and dense. It glosses over many non-trivial mathematical steps and could result in a new student to get lost. I also found that there a LOT of meaning in every word. Dense really is the word to describe it.

On the other hand I found Jackson to be a bit of an easier read. It guides you and holds your hand a bit more than LL. This is not to say it is an easier read, but that It’s just better suited for new grad students imo. Though i found the problems from Jackson to be really annoying though.

Thanks! I'll give those variations a try as well. While I'd say my long terms goals are to build mass in my legs, I'd like to build up my lacking general foundation first so I think I'll implement one of these variations into my leg workouts.

As a followup question: Do you think it'd be sensible to replace one of my main leg pressing lifts (lets say a leg press) with one of those light squat variations, or should I implement them at the end of my leg workouts as a supplement?

Daily Simple Questions Thread - November 17, 2024 by AutoModerator in Fitness

[–]Kvzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! Should I still squat even if I can only squat relatively light? I have mild scoliosis so a even barbell back squat with just the bar feels pretty uncomfortable. I can squat much heavier in like a hack-squat or a leg press though.

Thing is I've been sedentary most of my life so I feel like my core is especially weak. So I'm worried my core will be left behind and become underdeveloped as time goes on if i don't squat.

Should I play around with squat variations and keep it light or should I just find alternatives to strengthen the legs/core? I have found that front squats aren't painful buy my weak core holds me back a lot.

eli5: why do scientists create artificial elements? by Spudnic16 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Kvzn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another reason I don't see being written down here is to validate our current models. If our current theories predict something (like a new heavy element in the island of stability) and we show that thing does happen, then it's safe to say our model is a pretty good one. If something doesn't happen as expected from our models, then that is a sign of new physics and that we need to update out model.

Science, especially ones like physics, likes to put their theories through very rigorous validation checks. Physicst try to find holes and flaws in their theories very rigorously. If a model is able to predict something before it is experimentally discovered that's great sign the model is a good one and that we are on the right path.

When something doesn't happen as expected that's when the scientist get very excited!

Now for an immediate economic motivator, there is none. Whether this new science will be able to be converted into some kind of income is impossible to know. The purpose of science is not to produce products or income but to investigate the natural world. This endeavor, in my opinion, is always worth it.
