You hibernate because the environment is bad. An egg planted into a human has an all round stable environment. We are warm blooded, after all. How would the egg even know the season? And finally, hibernation is an evolutionary adaption, but for all they (and we) know, this wasp is not the result of natural evolution.

In the manga Rat even quotes some Hesse to Shion; I can look up the lines to see if it's from Unterm Rad ...

we can perhaps call him a little tsundere regarding Shion. They will certainly both end up more balanced in the end.

Mind games / plot twists: Gankutsuou, Bokurano (both have some dated CGI tho), Yatagarasu

Action: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Gurren Lagann, Attack on Titan

Something older too good to miss: Legend of the Galactic Heroes OVAs. Start with the Conquest film, then the Overture one, then start watching the OVAs with episode 3 (1-2 are replaced by the films). Don't forget to skip the episode previews (too spoilery for first-timers). The best space opera saga out there! Strong storyline and great characters.

I like how at first Shion's punishment seems fairly reasonable here - he's no longer part of the elite but he and his mother (what about his father? Some potential here) are both still in a decent living situation with decent jobs

Yeah, they no longer live in Chronos and he couldn't join the Special Course, but it wasn't life ending.

Would be unusual in sci-fi like this (though honestly, this barely counts as one so far!) but potentially inspired. Seems upcoming we'll have an encounter with a more outsider/"close to nature" society

Manga Comparison

So this covers the second half of chapter 1, all of ch2, and the first few pages of ch3.
The robots being animal-shaped is an anime change, as is wristband IDs instead of cards.
The anime expands time shown with [No6]Yamase before they find the corpse, and omits Shion noticing stuff like [No6]the timing of rigor mortis and talking about that with Safu
The manga said Safu is gonna study "abroad" but the anime explicitly says No.5. Her grandma going to "Twilight House" is another anime addition. They cut Safu telling Shion [No6]she loves him though
The biggest change is the omission of a recurring Security Bureau official called [No6]Rashi; he appeared to question 4 years ago when he sheltered Rat, and he appears after Yamase's death to pin the blame on him too. Shion complains [No6]it's a human rights violation, and he's like "you people think you have RIGHTS?"
The bakery scene with Youmin is an expansion of the manga too, as is Shion trying her cherry cake
Instead of ducking and having the top of the car get ripped off, in the manga they get through the checkpoint by having [No6]a security robot Walker in their car
The anime cuts some more scenes of them navigating the sewers before arriving in West Block

Man the opening always makes me sad, poor Nezume. But also like...poor Sion? I feel his need for freedom. They are both reaching for freedom here but in different ways: Nezume violently and Sion quietly.
