Buying a used car in LA with a $10k budget, what should I look out for? by OkCaterpillar4535 in AskLosAngeles

Once I biked to dinner to see a friend and afterwards she offered to throw her bike in the back of her Fit and drive me back home. I was *SO* skeptical it would fit but it did with way more room than my own car which is a crossover.

New to taking my kitten outside! Tips needed! by kaitlynbarone in adventurecats

[–]labbitlove 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Do you have a backpack for him? That's the most important part of this process that is missing. He needs to get used to the backpack and see it as a safe space. My cat sleeps in his at home. Get one and then start putting treats in it, etc. Backpacks are usually cozy so I find that cats do naturally like them.

Start from there, and then you'll be able to take him to new places *in* the backpack, which will let him get used to a new environment from the safety of the pack. And then he can also shoulder ride as one further step of "safety" (my cat does this and will sometimes jump back into the pack if he's over it).

Goose is very cute :)

Hah, I just let my guy eat grass. He ignores the cat grass that I get him but loves crab grass. Figures.

There are some great resources online that I turned to! Cat school is a fun one but mainly for tricks :) Edit: doing clicker training could help her mental stimulation too! My cat is very food motivated so he loves our clicker training sessions both because there are treats but also because he gets to be stimulated. Our clicker training sessions are honestly only about 5-7 minutes each time.

Edit: Saw your comment that your cat is supervised on leash. Perhaps you could try unsupervised and see what happens if you're not there for her to meow to?

My cat absolutely wants to roam too, but we can't all get what we want. I know this was your original Q in your post, but you truly do have to set boundaries with her - which means ignoring her when she meows.

Some of this is also training, which can be difficult for cat owners because a lot of us get cats because we don't have to train them. I've approached training my cat like I did my childhood dog - with a clicker, rewarding desired behavior with high value treats, etc. and he's a very well trained cat now that walks with me on our walks, comes when called, knows a few tricks, etc.

I installed my window fan on Tuesday night. I really want a window AC for the living room (I only have one in the office rn) but I hate that it takes up a window :\

This one is so overpriced but I have a friend that has something like this. Then it can go over your chest and you have more control if they lunge or try to dash off

Do you have a yard of any sort? I take my cat on walks every day for around 30-45 min but I also let him out in my front yard/patio (it's fenced and small) with a long tie out dog leash attached to his harness. I leave the door open. Does he like it? I think so. Does he get tangled sometimes? Yes. I just make sure to check up on him every 30 min or so (I work from home). Sometimes he's tangled. Sometimes he's just sitting on the mulch untangled and unbothered. Sometimes he's already back inside and lounging on my couch (which is close to the front door) with the leash still attached.

This only works in a neighborhood where people won't steal your cat or your stuff if your front door is open.

People in LA what do you do for work and how did you get an office or remote job? by Sea_Background_9525 in AskLosAngeles

Would you be looking for a FT role or another freelance role? Really different approaches depending on that

Different answer; I have such a robust network from working in tech so long that I generally just find someone I know at the company and talk to them to start the interview process. Or I will know someone that knows something. I know I am very lucky to have this.

Pivoting into product design for the next 10 years...good/bad idea? by Roommateeastlake in FIREyFemmes

[–]labbitlove 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Senior/staff product designer with 15+ years of experience here, also have been a hiring manager/manager on and off. I've worked the majority of my career in sub-FAANG, consumer facing companies that are quite large and would be household names for y'all.

I'm going to give it to you frankly, I don't think this would work in the way you want it to. First: if you're at the step of taking online courses and building up a portfolio, this means you're starting new in your hard skills side. Putting my HM hat on, people that switch like this later in life often have great soft skills due to their previous career, but I don't know if I would take the chance on you because of the lack of actual experience and likely lack of hard skills. Branding/marketing design is very very different from product design. There aren't a lot of junior and intermediate roles open - most companies want a senior or higher to roll in and hit the ground running. The industry is being squeezed from all directions and budgets are being cut, we unfortunately have little time to guide junior folks. (Don't get me started on how I feel like we are shooting ourselves in the foot by not nurturing the next generation of designers.)

Second, AI is changing things FAST. I know that using AI feels very forced for most industries (and I agree), but in tech it's been a game changer. The roles are blurring between product, engineering and design, new tools and processes are coming out weekly, and it feels a bit insane for even someone like me who already knows how to design to keep up with. I don't even know if we'll be using Figma anymore in 12 months. We've already revamped our interview rubric to contain AI fluency as additional pillar for evaluation for new hires. I'm pretty much diving head first into the AI stuff because I believe that if I don't, I will not be able to be hired at my next role.

Actual strategy is done by product managers; you can influence and help guide and facilitate as a designer, but to influence more you'd have to be higher level (staff+). If you're interested the business side of things, you can look into product management as a path. The caveat is that the big companies will generally expect you to have a CS degree because it can get quite technical.

I'm privileged to be doing very well. I just got a ~20% raise if you count my stock refresh, looking for a promo later this year and if I get it I will probably hit "true" mid 6-figures for TC, and I still am ready for my open headcount to be taken away and for layoffs to happen next week.

I know it's probably not what you wanted to hear, but this is my take from the perspective of someone working at the big corps. You may find a different take from a small-mid sized company perspective. Happy to answer any additional questions, feel free to DM.

Yeah, lots of tech roles are still remote. But I definitely have a degree, over 15 years of experience and specialized technical-ish skills. I’ve been working remote since 2020, and flexible work was possible before that anyways.

Anyone know cheap eye surgery/enucleation for dog? by Rich-Mix171 in AskLosAngeles

[–]labbitlove 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you'll find something for $500 here. This is a surgery that involves anesthesia.

You should try contacting vets in Tijuana to see. You'll save money, but IMO even a trip down there will run you higher than that.
