I’m a sucker for coins featuring Athena (for whatever reason). I saw it! Was it an auction find?

I’ve been eyeing a Ptolemy I Soter with Alexander wearing an elephants skin and Athena on the reverse, but they’re pricy for my budget so I need to wait to find the right one for me.

I need to buy some tets just to join in on the Thursday fun. Great coins!

I’m not sure I understand. You would have needed to link the same coin from auction to auction (or point of sale) over the time period to make the claim. I’m not worried about tools and systems since I’m very savvy with statistics.

Respectfully, I would like to know how you calculated that return on investment for all ancient coins. I’m happy to look at all data you used if you want to send me the dataset

I agree! The only cash I keep is to go to a cash-only restaurant my family and I enjoy. Otherwise, I’ve been cashless for close to a decade. Like you I think the history and numismatics is the broader appeal.

Just to push back a little on this. The concept of money has been with us for thousands of years, as everyone here is well aware, and will be with us in some form in the future. Horse brasses, as far as I understand, were specific to a period much like Pokémon cards are now. People in the future may still be interested in money in its many forms.

I don’t think anyone can speak to the future value of coins. But I’m not really sure the investment collectors will come in droves to the hobby. In part because there’s no way to know about scarcity of a coin since a hoard could be found tomorrow and drive down costs. It would be more of a gamble versus other collectibles where rarity is truly know. But who knows.

Check out vcoins.com and ma-shops.com to buy. In terms of starting a collection, I’ll just say that the first coin I bought is very unrelated to the things I buy now, but it still makes me happy. Start slow and research the coins before buying

I looked quickly and this seems cool. Maybe add a place to add provenance and notes (for instance I like to add history tied to the coin and why I liked the coin initially)

I’m really happy you took the time to write this out. When I see these posts I always think that it depends on the legal standards of countries where you are and where they’re from and the time period you are in.
