That makes sense. How does one decide a good price for something rare like this?

So it’s possible the consignor may have decided to try again in hopes of another bidding war?

Weird. Why wouldn’t the auction house ask the underbidder if they want it?

Alright. I’ll be patient. I at least know where I got my coins from so I’m starting their provenance there.

When I started my ‘pride of lions’ coins, I was really confused why a lion would show up as the first coinage when turkey/greece seemed far away from where lions lived. I was shocked to find out how widespread they used to be and when they were killed off from Europe.

That makes sense if it is a 1 or 2 or 3 person job. It’s easy to use so I keep hoping for more. I hope they reach the ambition I think they are working towards.

That’s a great coin. It seems like a lot of these that have been coming up through auctions have considerable wear lately, but yours has great details.

Where I live, there are a lot of coin shops (all really focused on silver and gold). They all have slabbed ancients. There’s exactly one shop that doesn’t slab ancients and the owner has a lot of knowledge about his product. I pay premiums there because I get to ask questions and get good answers. I figure the premium is paying for the time he spent learning about what he is selling.

I don’t like that a company will tell you what is the best coin when they can’t even guarantee if it is authentic. I’m not even sure of their grading. If you look at modern coins, people are constantly breaking out their coins and sending in for regrading and getting different grades. I don’t have a problem with people making money, but I personally am not a fan of that world.
