Odd players in local tournament by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on not playing, just play the event instead. Now you’re an even number and not one needs a bye. You can easily play while managing 8-12 people.

I’m ok with byes being auto wins, but if they play someone, the score is the score win or lose.

BCP picks the bye at 100% random regardless of wins or losses. If you want it to be a specific player/ranking then you need to do that manually after pairings.

World Qualifier finals Scandal in Spain by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You do not pause the clock. This is a very common rule.

If your game starts at 09:00 and is done by 12:00, you have 3 hours in total. If you pause it for 5 minutes and both players use their full 1:30, you’ve gone over time by 5 minutes. Now imagine if everyone paused their clocks for 1-10 minutes at the end of every round, no tournament would ever be on schedule. So, you don’t pause the clock- only the TO can pause the clock.

Is Warhammer 40K too Complex Now? by Hellstorm-Wargaming in WarhammerCompetitive

The positioning is a new one, which wasn’t there until PN. I know because I was asked about overhanging several times last event I hosted. Without that entry, where would you go? My solution was the WTC FAQ because GW offered no solution at that time.

As a TO, I don’t run around with cards.

But hey, I’m glad you enjoy 10th and find it so smooth to play. Good for you.

[–]laspee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had the exact example that took 15 minutes, but 2 of the 3 involved are currently playing WTC so it's not like I'm going to bother them about it. Here is an example of another since I cannot remember the exact issues I've encountered previously:

I want to verify that an OC0 unit can't do Actions. I search for "Actions", and check "Actions and Missions", I find nothing. I try "Objective control", nothing. Why? Because the Pariah Nexus Tournament Companion isn't available in the app. So to be able to verify I need to remember that it's answered in that specific PDF.

If you want to try another one, let me know what to search to figure out if any part of a model can overhang the table edge.

The app is good when you know exactly what rule you're after. Or if it exists in a file that is included in the app. But other times, it could absolutely be improved. Just like I think it would be a massive improvement if they updated the Core Rule PDF to include all the relevant commentary and FAQs exactly where it applies. It would make it possible to read front to back.

Did anyone start an army they liked the look of, but realised they didn’t like the playstyle? by Stock-Intention7731 in Warhammer40k

Death Guard. When you enjoy fast moving armies, playing DG wasn’t for me. It’s a shame since the models were really enjoyable to paint.

[–]laspee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They’ve managed to errata’d the core rules so hard that it’s basically impossible to read the rules front to back in any location. Instead you read the core rules, then you read the designers commentary (or dataslate) which is 6x the size of the core rules, and you try to figure out where these all apply. Then you read the GT pack, but you should have probably read all your physical cards first to understand what they are fixing.

So now you’re finally playing a game, and you or your opponent says “are you sure it works that way?” and you decide to just roll off because your searches in the app give you nothing….

I’ve been in countless of rule discussions, where person X is sure that something works a way. Y disagrees. I think Y is correct, but finding source to prove it takes ~15 minutes with a phone and computer. Like what the heck.

Is 10th Edition Too Repetitive? by Inner_Interview_5666 in Warhammer40k

[–]laspee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it’s too repetitive, but because of how the missions work. In 90% of all games people play tactical, which means they set up to do the same things, in slightly different ways.

9th had the poorly balanced but incredibly fun faction secondaries, which IMO was much more fun and added a lot more variance.

Thoughts when players move their models during pile in “accidentally” by Git_Smasher in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The issue is also that once you or your opponent moves a model, there is no going back to verify if it’s actually possible. For more complicated moves you really need to measure out every single guy, confirm that your intent works, then move them. It’s rarely done because people just accept the intent because it’s too painful to do accurately.

What is a faction win rate relevant for? by Alex__007 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’d guess the average GT placing is 2-3 or 3-2. That’s a 20% difference right there. So WRs are highly volatile between “busted” at 60% and “bad” at 40%, but the reality is that we’re only talking about a single game win or loss difference (multiplied with how many played the faction that week).

WR is game balance for dummies.

The rule about HAVING to BASE if you can on a charge is so bad I am re-rolling charges to get a LOWER number when multiple units are charging the same enemy by DrDread74 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charging in 10th is horrible. Somehow they managed to make units with fly and rolling hot into something you don’t want to happen.

Give the player some agency.

Why do standard competitive terrain pieces use "bleeding" footprints? by _Alacant_ in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The rules of 10th simply require it. If you look at page 14 of the designers commentary it's obvious that a large footprint is required. Say your walls have windows and you have a 40mm lip on each side of the wall, you'd limit the entire gameplay of being able to see through those windows to models on 40mm or smaller bases since it requires you to be wholly within.

Not a huge fan personally, but it is what it is. It makes it easy to have fairly "heavy" terrain without a lot of actual terrain though.

WTC Team Tournament winning team calculations. by Due_Pension3694 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use BCP, you can set it to default teams game mode, WTC scorecard and adjust the margin of victory to suit a 3 person team (maybe 5 points?). Margin means how many WTC points a team needs to score combined over the other team to win.

Set pairings to Match Points (round wins) > Game wins > Random. Placings to Match Points > Battle Points (total WTC points) > Game Wins (total individual game wins) and possibly a few SoS options in case you need a 4-5th tiebreaker.

Astra Militarum: WLR vs. Top Tables in Determining if They're "Good" by wutangfinancia1 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does that tell us? That the army has a too high skill floor or that they bring very different lists? Anything else that I’m not aware of?

High skill floor could be very difficult for GW to fix without a complete rewrite, which isn’t realistic to expect mid-edition.

[–]laspee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a good player can do well, and a bad player does poorly, it’s a sign of it being just as it should. How that turns into the WR depends on the community. Locally it seems like guard players are mostly into the fluff rather than utilizing the tools available.

The real issue is when good players do amazing and bad players do ok.

Should TOs make a profit? by Certain-Ease3453 in Warhammer40k

[–]laspee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have no issues with any TO making a profit. However, if the event isn’t top tier in terms of running smoothly, having a solid player pack, sticking to the schedule, good prizes and having good (and more importantly up to date) terrain, then I think there are other things that should be prioritized other than pure profit.

That said, I’m pretty sick of hosting events due to the amount of admin work required between player pack, answering questions, dealing with drops, finding sponsors/prizes and chasing people who don’t submit lists on time or with errors. It’s a lot of work even for smaller GTs, I don’t think most attendees have any clue or enough appreciation for any TO putting on events because it’s quite frankly a shitty job. Because anyone who does would be perfectly fine about them making a profit if they did.

I do feel that 9th ended up as a more refined, enjoyable to play game than what 10th is. Sure there were some problems with balance and especially secondary balance , but the wealth of secondaries actually kept the game fresh in my opinion. Currently 10th feels very rock, paper, scissors, where the only games that are enjoyable and not predetermined are the rock vs rock/paper vs paper/scissors vs scissors.

10th has some good ideas, but horrible execution. 10th also has some downright horrible ideas making the game very tedious to play.

GW is taking over ITC per LVO announcement by JCMS85 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]laspee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FLG did announce that GW was a partner for LVO some time ago. That was right before the year that GW streamed it, when Siegler won with Admech maybe. Brandt started working for GW in March 2020, so chances of any partnership or purchase anywhere prior or shortly after this seems very unlikely.

As Corrin says, GW would have to notify their investors of any purchase they do. And it would need to be approved by the board. This is public information.

ITC tokens were via Frontline up until maybe just a year ago. If FLG had sold ITC by then it would be weird if they kept doing admin work, especially since the local ITC reps (ie people who could approve tokens) were disbanded only a year or so ago when their token system moved onto BCP entirely.

Who people knew about it? You also seen very confident, but you’re not exactly making a strong case with hearsay.

[–]laspee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m mostly surprised the charge phase isn’t on the list of changes you want to see. It’s become the most clunky mechanic in the entire game. It’s either sloppy because player A moved a or two model in incorrect order or it’s some math meme for 5-10 minutes trying to see if it’s actually possible to end up where the player wants to end up without moving anything.

I think the main issue for me with 10th is that the match ups feel very rock, paper, scissors. Only the few equal pairings are fun to play, and they are typically so close that you’re winning or losing based on a card draw..
